So I don't read books..Follow

#1 Sep 20 2010 at 6:55 PM Rating: Good
..on average.

But at my new job I have to either keep earplugs in, or I can listen to my earphones.

My MP3 players is old, and has started to only play 10 songs (out of like 300) over and over. 8 Hours of this has gotten pretty boring. I can't skip over songs due to me sandblasting. My hands are pretty much inside a machine for 30-40min at a time.

So..the books I have read (with in the last 4 years): HP series, Some of the lord of the rings (read Hobbit), Eragon/Eldest/3rd one.

I like adventure-sci-fi-fantasy worlds.

I'm not looking to buy hard copies of books...but to get audiobooks to listen to.

But yea... I don't know anything that has came out lately that maybe I should know about.

So I come to you all! Enlighten me?

It's a children's series, but since you've read Harry Potter and Eragon I don't expect that will bother you, but The Dark is Rising was a series I enjoyed reading. Xanth is another fun Children's fantasy series.

You might enjoy the book Belgarath and the Belgraid and Mallorean series by David and Leigh Eddings. The Wayfarer Redemption series is pretty good, too.

You can also get the Tolkein trilogy, but instead of just the books being read it's a BBC dramatization. It's pretty neat.

Im not an avid book reader, and I can count on one hand the number of books ive purchased in my life. One of those is House of Leaves which i recommend to everyone regardless of the genres they like :P The page layout itself is pretty interesting at times.

Dragonlance isn't a bad series to listen to, particularly the War of Souls (the actual title of the book is Dragons of a fallen sun). Dragonlance Chronicles starts out good but the transition between volume one and two is frustrating. It feels as though they left out a massive section of information between the two. The hero's take over a castle/prison thing and comment that they need to keep moving to another city at the end of the first volume. The beginning of the second, they are at that city, lightly commenting on their adventure through this cave and referencing it like if the reader knows what they are talking about.

I wonder how they'd translate all that into audio.

Wouldnt be the same thats for sure. It coincides with the emotion in the story and adds a neat (maybe a little gimmicky) element to it.

This isn't really a sci fi series but it kind of deals with the super natural. It's the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. The first book in the series is called Odd Thomas. It's about a boy who can see dead people as well as some other bad omen creatures. It's not like omg Sixth Sense either. These dead people are able to help him stop crimes or other bad events from happening. It's very well written and it's part of a like 4-5 books series so it should help keep you busy for a bit.

I can tell you more if you would like but I don't want to give too much away in case you would like to read/listen to them.

I shall look into them all. As long as it is a good story, I'm down.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I'm not a huge reader either, but I couldn't put that book down and ended up reading the entire series in a few weeks.

I'm reading the 2nd in Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan's Strain trilogy of vampire books, The Fall.

The virus driven vampire apocalypse is coming along nicely, thus far.

Also, Earth.

It's kind of adventure, it does fit the rest of your criteria though. Dragonriders of Pern is my favourite series. If you plan on giving them a go, I liked it better when I managed to get them chronologically (by their timeline) as you know who people are and what they've done rather then just get the quick overview. I read them mostly out of rank based on what I got from the library so it really doesn't matter.

Yea as long as it has a good story, I'll check it out. teen/young adult/adult it doesn't really matter.

Thus far I've just listened to the Dark is Rising books, I think I'm 1/3 the way through book 4.
Really is a good story so far.

Not sure if the Enders Game series is on audio, but if it is, check it out.

On Piratebay I found a Torrent with all the Starwars books as audio, what makes them a little different than other audio books is they add all the sound effects lightsabers, blaster and musical score over the different actors doing the voices. Have to admit it adds a bit of ambiance to a otherwise mediocre sci-fi book series.

Myself i also love listening too the old classic detective noir vintage radio shows; Adventures Of Philip Marlowe, Yours Truly,Johnny Dollar, Sam Spade, Doc Savage, Boston Blackie..... Most you can get Free on CD at your local library or Free download sites.

Finished The Dark is Rising last week, I enjoyed all of it but the end (maybe last chapter? was last 30min of audio for me).

everyone's mind gets wiped out but one, lame.

Then I decided to see what was up with His Dark Materials, why everyone is so fussy about the books (or why some "groups" are). Pretty good story too. I will finish the 3rd book tomorrow (then there are 2 shots that go with it).

These fantasy stories really make the day go by so much smoother ^-^

I'm going to have to read those books. I read the first one and liked it, but never finished them. We have all three now, so I have no excuse.

But I have to read "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien first.
