Netflix Inc. has reached a five-year deal worth nearly $1 billion to stream movies from Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM online starting Sept. 1 -- a major move that boosts its "Watch Instantly" offerings and makes the studios' joint pay TV venture Epix immediately profitable.

The agreement marks a further push by Netflix to stream movies to homes directly via personal computers, game consoles, Blu-ray players and TVs, and away from its rent-by-mail method. Netflix is trying to get its customers to view movies online so it can save on postage costs.

Huzzah! The whole "watch instantly" thing is something that always sounds good but then you see that there's a dozen "new" movies and hundreds of crap films from 1985 you'd never want to see. And it's never even the films that were popular from back when, it's always something like "Short Circuit III".

But when they do have something from this year (or an older true classic) that I'd want to rent otherwise, it's just awesome. So here's hoping for more of that.

This makes me happy.

I guess I can try to argue to Ray once again that we need a Netflix account instead of going to Blockbuster and buying the used DVDs. Some of the ones he has bought are just ATROCIOUS.

If you buy even one DVD (that you don't want as a keepsake/gift/etc) a month, you've pretty much paid for your Netflix. I totally recommend it to anyone that isn't blind.

ETA: Or rent something like 4 Redbox DVDs OR 1 Blockbuster movie.

I just want movies that are nearing the end of their theater life, or not on DVD, not necessarily theater day releases, to be able to be streamed to my home on a pay service.

I just saw the movie 9 for the first time last week, since it came out on Cinemax just recently. (Not that great...) I do not enjoy going to a crowded theater to watch a movie with 50 other people chewing on their food, slurping their drinks, talking to each other, talking on their cellphones. I want to sit in the quiet of my own home, with my nice big TV, watching a movie. I would do it legally if I could...

Sweeeeeeet!!!! I've been paying my $8.99/month, but I haven't even bothered 'renting' a physical disc. So far, the online stream has been good enough for me, but now it's even better.

The amount of TV shows available on the Instant Queue is enough for me. We usually end up holding on to a disc for a week every time, but watch something from the Instant Queue every night pretty much.

I would welcome this news if I hadn't canceled my account a few months ago for them refusing to send me a pair of new releases for over two months, despite them being on top of my queue. I can understand making me wait a week or two, but two months is just unacceptable.

What were the movies marked as? I'm just curious because I've had little trouble getting things that are marked even as "Long Wait" within a week or so of them being on my list through the magic of the first spot on the queue.

Excellent news! Netflix's Watch Instantly catalog has already gotten much better in the last year, and this will only help. I think the studios have finally decided to back Netflix as the digital distribution platform of choice.

Wow, you actually have Blockbuster still? My neighborhood just lost all of our Hollywood Video stores (due to the company officially going out of business), and all but one Blockbuster closed over a year ago. There's not even any local Mom-&-Pop rental places anymore; Blockbuster and Hollywood ran 'em outta business years ago. Our only affordable options are Netflix, Red Box, the public library, or Pirate Bay...

Also, what movies were they? I've seen some movies on "long wait" for quite a while due to popularity. I've also had stuff be on "long wait" that's not new releases. For example, I've currently got Cowboy Bebop Remix in my queue, and the first disc (and only the first disc for some reason) has been marked "long wait" for weeks. I also had Farscape Season 1 in my queue for literally months. I finally found out the discs had actually been recalled due to a manufacturing defect or something. So, sometimes the delay isn't because of anything Netflix can control.

"The Hangover" and "Inglorious Basterds", not exactly obscure, hard to get titles. They were both on the top of my queue before they were even released, two months, and thirty discs of DS9 later and they were both still just sitting up there. As soon as I finished off DS9 I canceled it.

Huh. I had Inglorious Basterds come to me as soon as it came up, soon after its release. I've heard of people having the issues you had but never experienced them myself or seen anything in my queue skipped over more than once.

If you still want to watch Farscape Netflix added them to the Instant Watch list. I just put the first 3 seasons in my IW queue, they haven't added Season 4 or "The Peacekeeper Wars" yet.

Not entirely related, but kinda cool is that Hulu is offering a similar service through the PS3(and probably other platforms) that's currently in beta(my roommate's in the beta, which is what reminded me to mention this).

Interwebs Challenge Time:

Find a video or audio file of Johnny Five singing "Still Alive", it can be a files spliced from different scenes from the movies.

I'm guessing that you called customer service first. What did they say? In my experience their support is excellent...friendly and helpful.

On topic: great news! I new they'd get around to beefing up the instant streams eventually. Took a little longer than I thought, but no matter. I'll finally have something new to watch other than MST3K reruns.

At the time, they didn't have it on streaming yet. Once I found that they did, I had a small geek-gasm and promptly watched everything they had available. I have Season 4 and Peacekeeper Wars in my queue somewhere, but I keep getting distracted by Dr. Who and sundry other movies... :)

I watched Boondock Saints last night (the original) and the Watch Instantly version was in fullscreen mode with the sides chopped off. I've only seen it once before and that was years ago but I'm pretty certain it was letterboxed.

It also seemed strangely edited but that might have just been the film. As in abrupt cuts that looked as though you were supposed to fit commercials in there. If not for all the swearing, I'd have thought I was watching a for-broadcast version of the movie.

Edit: Netflix states that the DVD version is "Widescreen Anamorphic 2.35:1" but doesn't explicitly mention the Watch Instantly version. I'd have thought they'd be the same though.

As an avid Netflix user myself, I'm pretty stoked about this. Now if they'd only put True Blood back on their streaming list, I'd be happier.

If anyone with kids wants an awesome show from the 80's, check out Jim Henson's Storyteller. There's only 9 episodes, but I watched them yesterday and was thoroughly entertained. Or you know, if you're like me and just like fairy tales you'll enjoy it too.

About a month ago a group of us watched the first episode of Storyteller (something about a guy capturing death) and it was really good.

Yeah, the guy with the magical bag. They did a few fairy tales I was familiar with, and a few that I wasn't, so I really enjoyed it. One of them was a particularly interesting variation of "Stone Soup" starring the storyteller himself, as he claims it happened to him. They also did the story of the Princess whose brothers get turned to swans/ravens and she has to stay silent for however many years to free them and the Cinderella type story of the girl with the three dresses that look the moon, stars and sun. And one about the seventh son of a seventh son.

Feedfliks.com is a great place to see what's coming to Netflix streaming and see what's on its way out so you catch it before it's gone.

Well, "gone" back to DVD and requiring a massive two day wait to get it. My only real ***** is that they display each episode of shows as a separate item so you can see "325 new items" and 150 of them are Seasons 1-6 of some show.
