Being that the next avatar was set to be a water bender, I always wondered if the show would try to make it from the Southern Water tribe, or if they'd go with the Northern (since they actually had numerous benders). I always knew that they wouldn't let a show this popular fade away, so I was expecting a sequel.

Two generations passed, and there is not only another water bender in the Southern tribe, but an Avatar. And by the way it sounds, she isn't a directly descended from Katara. I mean, sure, two generations is probably not that odd to get more people with natural bending abilities. But the Southern Tribe was pretty small, two generations of a small group of people isn't exactly that many. Unless more Northern tribe members went South with Pakku.

I wonder if the Air benders are going to be a large group again, or if Aang's son is going to be one of a few. Some of the news articles mention his name as Tenzin, and him being a trainer to the new Avatar. Also mention of the possibility of a Bei Fong member being in the new group.

Probably going to be all descendants of the original gang, which will be kind of unoriginal (I didn't care for Final Fantasy IV The After Years, but not just because of that reason). With Aang's son being the trainer, I wonder if Korra is going to be the granddaughter of Sokka? And the name Wei Bei popped up in a place or two, maybe a grandson of Toph.

Well after the War, I'd assume people could move around the world without the fire nation all up in their business. So some North benders may have moved about.

Unless there were some that managed to get away that we didn't get to learn about, the only possible Air Benders would be Aang and Katara's children or grandchildren.
Tenzin is the only one mentioned so far.

Here it says Aang pretty much died "early" due to being frozen, and that there may be people from the Original cartoon. So it could be Korra is the granddaughter of Sokka, and maybe we get some (filler) stories from him to her.

I didn't know if the Air Benders worked the way the other bender groups seemed to. I've only watched the series, so I haven't read any potential story out there that may explain it in better detail, but the Air Nomads didn't seem to be directly related to each other. I assumed that the air benders were born to other groups of people and gathered together.

I thought this too, and that they were all Males.
But I think in season 3 in one of Aang's flash backs it shows Female air benders.
So I'm guessing you need a parent of one or the other to learn.

because..

This would be questionable I would think. You could have Air Benders who could also bend other elements (like if a Fire bender left his life..and joined up with the nomads..and learned to air bend...who he then be able to bend both?)?

Would break the point of an Avatar I would think.

However at the same time, I could see how a Fire nation child was unable to bend fire and maybe was shunned out. He meets up and travels with the Air Nomads and through training he finds out he can Air Bend, but also apply some fire techs to the air bending and cause the air to get Hot/cool and thus new air bending techs are discovered.

Theorycrafting, can be so fun.

Not to mention that the previous air bender Avatar was a female Air Nomad. She talks with Aang on his pre-Firelord battle Spirit World trip. And I think she is shown in previous avatar state stuff as well. He goes back through Roku, Kyoshi, then the water bender guy avatar, then the female air nomad avatar. (Who he thought would help him the most, since she was also an Air Nomad).

I just didn't get the whole family relation feel from the air nomads that I got from the rest of the nations. Probably because of their society structure though...

Yea im my theorycrafting: Each nation has 2 types of people- Benders and non-Benders.
We only see the Air nomads who can bend. While somewhere out in their hidden mountain tops, would be settlements of Air nomads who maybe tend to flocks (air bysons)/ farm.
They would be the more family oriented ones, while kids who show they can bend are then sent to the Temples to train.

The reason you think there are no female air benders is that their temples are segregated by gender - two are male, two are female.

Source? IIRC in Aang's flashbacks there were both male and female air benders at his temple.

Well, if you accept that as a source:

Quote:
The Southern Air Temple was one of the four temples of the Air Nomads, and one of the two exclusively housing male Airbenders, the other being the Northern Air Temple.

http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Southern_Air_Temple

Th eastern temple is a female one. There are boys in the picture, not men.

Counter

http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Eastern_Air_Temple

Quote:
The Eastern Air Temple is one of the four temples of the Air Nomads, and one of the two, the other being the Western Air Temple, which exclusively housed female Airbenders.

When Aang, the current Avatar, was to be separated from his mentor, Monk Gyatso, the elders of the Southern Air Temple had decided to send Aang to the Eastern Air Temple to complete his training without Gyatso's fatherly influence.

Therefore there were male and female airbenders at the temple he trained at.

No, I mean how do you think what you posted is a 'counter' to this:

Quote:
The eastern temple is a female one. There are boys in the picture, not men.

The two do not conflict.

You never specified men, in your post quoted below you said males. Unless boys count as some unknown third gender then my statement is still correct.

That wasn't the post you quoted, though, was it? You didn't 'counter' the thing you quoted. There was no need to 'counter' what I'd said earlier either, as I'd already clarified what I meant. I'm not really sure what your deal is here, but it's incredibly tedious.

I forgot the point I was trying to make with all the posts so I'll just end with this statement. Aang trained at a temple that had both male and female air benders, which is what I stated in my original post for this discussion.

Wasn't it at this point that Aang ran away? So then he never actually trained at the Eastern Air Temple.

Or am I mistaken?
