Is anyone checking out the new series? So far I've seen the first episodes for: Amagami SS, Ookami-san, and High School of the Dead.
Amagami SS seems like it could be pretty good, if you're into romance anime series. Ookami-san's first episode was pretty meh, it could develop into something better, but I'm not betting on it.
High School of the Dead, while the animation is nice, all I'm seeing is stereotypical zombies, with added fanservice.
So, has anyone else checked out a new series? Thoughts on the ones I listed? (I'm not sure what else was supposed to be starting this season).
Edited to add: I'll be following the three I listed, at least until I decide whether they're worth watching (probably 4-5 episodes in).

I watched the first episode of Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi. I was not really impressed but I will give it a few more episodes before judging it.
Honestly, lately I have not followed new series at all. However, I do plan on keeping up with Strike Witches 2 which starts up on Wednesday. Other than that though, I'm still catching up on old series.

I'm surprised High School of the Dead got animated, considering the manga has been on hiatus for a couple years now. Manga was good, I'll check out the Anime.

I was hoping to use Strike Subs since they did the subs of the first season that I watched (and I thought they were good), although I haven't actually heard if they're doing season 2 they were formed in the process of doing the first season so I assume they'll want to continue. We'll have to see.

Less then impressed with High School of the Dead. I mean it's really cool, like when the girls were running along and all BFF then backstabs the other girl and gets eaten anyways. But I think the ecchi gets in the way of things. I did not need the camera aimed at her skirt the whole time while she was fighting off the zombie. The panty shot in the scene I mentioned previously. I think it could've been really good.

Just finished watching the first episode of Seitokai Yakuindomo. It looks like your typical school life/comedy/harem anime but the dialog can be a bit disturbing to say the least. I actually watched two different subs cause I couldn't believe some of the thing they were saying. If you like schoolgirls talking about tampon and anal masturbation this anime might be for you.
Just watched Seitokai Yakuindomo and, it's based entirely around one liners. The Occult one, good first episode. Amagami I wasn't sure what to think about till watching the 2nd episode, and it improved. Nurihyon, seems pretty typical. Ookami's pretty good.
There's a spring one I was watching, RAINBOW- Nisha Rokubo no Shichinin and while it can be pretty dark it adds up to be pretty good. The voice actor for Rokurouta I've been hearing a lot of recently. First time I remember him is from ah the name slips me. It was about him forgetting who he was then leading the village into a rebellion that eventually lead him to be the king of the country. They rode on raptors. Anyways, he was the main character, and there were a couple other smaller parts he's done in other animes.

One show I didn't see mentioned here from this season was Mitsudomoe.
I actually overlooked this show when I first noticed it because the story didn't appeal to me, but since then, I heard a lot of good things about it. After watching the first two episodes, I have to recommend it as a good comedy.

The second sister is good natured and very strong, but clumsy and extremely perverted (draws pictures of breasts). The last sister is very quiet and gloomy, usually keeping to herself and always seen holding a book, but she's also the scariest of the bunch.
So far, both episodes have followed a similar format: 4 separate stories, each disconnected and with their own theme.
I found the show very funny (but I have a weird sense of humor) and worth watching if you like silliness.

I thought it was pretty cool to see that High School of The Dead was turning into an anime. I've been reading the manga for awhile and I'm wondering if I should go check it out. Alas, that is the only new anime I actually recognize. I'll have to watch some random stuff, maybe I'll get lucky and like something. /shrug
Now that I had the time to sample most of the new series for this season, here's my thoughts on each of them.

Seitokai Yakuindomo: One-liner, adult humor centered around sexual inuendo, very little character development, no central plot... serious candidate to be dropped soon but some might like it.
So that's pretty much it for what I will be following this season. I still have Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin to check out but the 2 main contender for keeping my interest till the end are Shiki and Highschool of the dead while I will probably give a serious chance to Mitsudomoe. The rest will probably be dropped at some point unless they drastically improve over the next few episodes.

Amagami is totally worth the watch (3 episodes in).

I dropped Ookami-san 3 episodes in. I know episode 4 is out now, but I have no interest in watching it.

I'm still watching Amagami SS, because as olde as romance series are, I find this one fresh enough to keep me interested.
Oh, and finding out which female body part the main character will kiss in each arc is kinda awesome.
Ookami-san has been off my "Currently Watching list" for a while, no interest in catching up on it.
I just dropped High School of the Dead (Haven't seen Episode 8). Fan service in this series is way overdone, with the plot being incredibly cliche.
I watched the Legend of Koizumi OVA for some reason. I don't know why, really. It's about world leaders duking it out in Mahjong.
I lol'd, so I guess it was worth the watch.
Oh, and of course, still watching K-on!! season 2. Only 6 more episodes until the moe blob series is done.

So, I get the idea from looking at Instanz.net's main page that the new season has started. Anything of interest this time around? Personally looking at 'Yosuga no Sora' and 'Oreimo', I might check these out... It's been ages since I've watched any anime. I've even stopped watching Bleach in favor of the manga...

I'm finding it really hard to watch any anime lately. I just came to the conclusion that most of the best anime are based on manga, so why not read the manga? Why risk an anime series leaving out important manga plot points or adding needless filler? Why risk an anime not lasting until the manga end and cutting off early with a filler ending? Why not read the manga and get a much more condensed story saving on time? Why not read the manga and get the latest story as it happens rather than months or years later?

Have to agree with you on the initial sentence though. Some anime really seems like it would be much less worthwhile as a manga just because of the effect the acting and music have on you. Clannad, for instance.

Two reasons. 1. Animation, some things are just better animation. Gaara vs Rock Lee fight for example. 2. Alternate storytelling. NHK is a decent example, even though I haven't gotten around to reading the manga yet. The anime is good, and definitely worth watching imo. But even then, after watching it you can read the manga and get a whole new viewpoint- since it's different.
But yeah, I can understand the whole filler ending thing. Soul Eater is a great example. The last 2 episodes were utter pieces of sh*t. So bad that it was actually the catalyst for getting me to read manga. I'm still glad I watched the anime though, because up until that point it was superb.

But yeah, I can understand the whole filler ending thing. Soul Eater is a great example. The last 2 episodes were utter pieces of sh*t. So bad that it was actually the catalyst for getting me to read manga. I'm still glad I watched the anime though, because up until that point it was superb.

Two reasons. 1. Animation, some things are just better animation. Gaara vs Rock Lee fight for example. 2. Alternate storytelling. NHK is a decent example, even though I haven't gotten around to reading the manga yet. The anime is good, and definitely worth watching imo. But even then, after watching it you can read the manga and get a whole new viewpoint- since it's different.

At this stage in my anime-watching-ness, I find it easier keeping up with new series, than finding olde torrents and hoping the download was worth it.

I agree for some series. I enjoyed Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni a hell of a lot more as an anime than a manga. The sounds really make the difference. Same with Ouran High School Host club. Without the voices attached to the characters, it's terrible.
Obviously both were in Japanese with English subs. Edward Elric's voice coming out of Tamaki's character is just TOO messed up.

Agreed. Although they definitely set themselves up for a spinoff... I just don't know if it will be as good.
