I've decided I want to watch some good horror movies. Any recommendations on some that will totally melt my face? Preferably netflix available as I dont want to travel the earth for some underground titles.

Favorite horror movie would probably be The Exorcist. Gore movies dont do it for me. Looking for one that really plants itself in your head. I've heard Paranormal Activity is pretty good and have that coming on Netflix. Also I just watched The Tale of Two Sisters last night, thought the plot twists were overused and only one scene in the movie made my skin crawl a little. Slept like a baby afterwards so it failed.

I prefer my horror to have humorous undertones. Things like the Return of the Living Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Evil Dead series as well as Dead Alive and Zombie Strippers will make you chuckle while trying too hard to be frightening. The Leprechaun movies are okay for that as well.

As far as horror for horror's sake, well, I can't really remember the last time I was scared by a movie so my opinion on the matter is a bit off. Maybe Drag Me To Hell or The Hills Have Eyes would be up that alley. Maybe Phantasm as well, though I don't remember the sequels too clearly.

Phantasm is an awesome series to watch; thanks for reminding me of them, need to add them to my Netflix list as well. To me Drag Me to Hell was just a variation of Thinner; as for The Hills Have Eyes the remakes were meh, watch the original ones.

Rec (The original version of hollywood's Quarantine), Cloverfield, Drag Me to Hell, 28 Days Later, Session 9, Let the Right One In, & Event Horizon are some of the more modern movies that actually scared me.

Classics include The Thing, Alien, & Jacob's Ladder.

If you want to laugh, too: Dead Alive, Evil Dead, The Host, & the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (For one scene that has traumatized generations!).

I do not include modern Japanese horror movies in my lists because every time I watch one, I wished I hadn't seen whatever it is I saw.

The Critters series is also good for a horror laugh.

But a spoonful of horror laughs helps the terror go down.

Oh yeah, The Host is like a better Korean version of Cloverfield.

I know the first time I saw The Ring, I had a real desire to keep the lights on that night. I've been told the Japanese original, Ringu, was far scarier, too. Event Horizon gave me nightmares, too. Can't think of any others off the top of my head...

I'm probably not the best person to give horror movie advice, though. I can get creeped out by a good book (or even some of the "creepypasta" I've run across from 4chan, such as the "Suicidemouse.avi" one...). I remember after reading H.P. Lovecraft's "The Rats in the Walls," I kept feeling like something was watching me & "heard" things in the walls at night...

You can skip George A Romero's new Survival of the Dead (which is available online @ moviefather.com).

Trust me.

What kind of idiot put his movie for sale on DVD and VoD, and then shows it in theaters?

Possibly the same ones who accidentally released "Night of the Living Dead" into public domain by forgetting to include a copyright notice in the proofs?

That was actually the distributor's fault, but you would have thought that Romero would have learned from it.

I'll be 100% honest here: The Ring scared the crap out of me as a teenager, but while I heard Ringu was scarier, I was not scared once the entire time. It had no effect on me; I think because I had to read subtitles and the emotional impact was lessened because I kept having to look away from the action. Either way, it was very disappointing.

The Hills Have Eyes didn't scare me, but the rape scene in it made me VERY uncomfortable. Rape is just unpleasant. And the end of the movie was just downright goofy.

So maybe just getting the Ring would be wiser? I've never seen the movie period.

Also, I've seen The Hills Have Eyes and was bored by it.

I recently saw 30 Days of Night... not bad if you're looking for gore...most of the scary parts to me had nothing to do with vampires (in the start of the movie when the woman's truck gets hit by another vehicle).

The last, and possibly only movie that freaked me out was also, as mentioned by others, The Ring. Though to be honest it had nothing to do with the movie either. I started by watching the special features before the main movie, and watched the video of 'the girl' that they all see in the movie. Then I proceeded to watch the film. When it finished, I pressed open on the dvd player...and the disc didn't come out.

Try both versions of Ring. In my opinion japanese is better but they're both good.

Dark Water and grudge are worth watching too, but only japanese ones. While I am sucker for Jenny Connelly Dark Water US is simply boring while JP had me sitting on edge of the chair.

If you don't mind zombies go for 28 Days Later. It's quite good.

Maybe its because I'm a fairly new daddy, but I'm watching Rob Zombie's Halloween remake, and Mike Myers as a kid is creepy as all hell.

That indie was shot in a neighborhood called Rancho Penasquitos in San Diego, where I have quite a few family members. Unfortunately, the house (where the movie's director lived) has the same floor plan as one of my uncle's house. So while I was watching it, I couldn't stop comparing that house to my uncle's. "Hey, that's Len's room down the hall! Hey! That upstairs closet is where we used to play! Dude! Remember when we slid down the banister and tried to throw the ball into the chandelier at the same time?"

Did not make a scary movie for me.

That's a shame.

I've read some reviews of the movie now that i've seen it and apparently there was a lot of hype or something that the movie didnt live up to. I also saw a trailer and noticed it shows the final scene in the trailer. That would have ruined the movie for me.

Before somebody recommended it to me, i had never even heard of the movie lol.
