Mission of Honor slated for July 2010 release.

You can find a couple minor snippets on the appropriate forum at http://www.davidweber.net. Major snippetting probably won't begin for a couple months yet.

If I've had one issue with recent (well, as recent as can be for a series last whose last novel was--5?--years ago) mainline HH novels it's that the political maneuvering that doesn't directly involve Honor often makes my eyes glaze over, and I find myself skimming it and not paying particularly close attention. Reading the description of this book, however, I suspect I'm going to have to go back and re-read At All Costs and maybe even War of Honor, because I have no clue why the Sollies have their panties in a twist, except that it likely has something to do with that system the Star Kingdom annexed. Of course, the five years of downtime since At All Costs came out may have something to do with that as well.

It also probably wouldn't hurt to finally break down and read the two novels in each of the two offshoot Honorverse series (Shadow of Saganami and Storm from the Shadows, and Crown of Slaves and Torch of Freedom) since I imagine the events in those are relevant in some tangential way to the setup for Mission of Honor.

Yeah, unfortunatly you really are going to have to read them. And they aren't his best work by a long shot, but there are a few things revealed in there that are going to play a huuuuge role. Without spoiling too much, there is a highly significant, game changing piece of technology that is going to decimate the existing power structure if played right, as well as a few things that explain the whole need for the crown of whatever series. If you want a spoiler anyways, PM me.

Re-read up to "In enemy hands" now. I suspect i'll be finished with the re-read far short of the next release. which is unfortunate! I run out of more books that way...

I'm not sure how far behind I am... I think the last one I read was the one after the hell/prison planet.

The prison planet book is Echoes of Honor. After that, there is:

Ashes of Victory
War of Honor
At All Costs

There are a couple of anthologies that have stories in them which take place between Ashes of Victory and War of Honor, and one of the short stories in Worlds of Honor sets up the offshoot series (known as the Manpower series) that begins with Crown of Slaves.

I'm not entirely certain, because I haven't read it, but I think one of the shorts in the other anthology, called The Service of the Sword, sets up the other offshoot series, known as the Saganami Island series which begins with The Shadow of Saganami.

I believe the anthologies are best read before War of Honor, and then The Shadow of Saganami and Crown of Slaves should be read after War of Honor. Then read At All Costs and then, as I understand it, events in the next two additions to the two offshoot series (Storm from the Shadows and Torch of Freedom) are going to be pretty necessary to read before Mission of Honor.

So the reading order should be as follows:

Ashes of Victory (main HH #9)
Worlds of Honor (anthology)
The Service of the Sword (anthology)
War of Honor (main HH #10)
The Shadow of Saganami (Saganami Island #1)
Crown of Slaves (Manpower #1)
At All Costs (main HH #11)
Storm from the Shadows (Saganami Island #2)
Torch of Freedom (Manpower #2)
Mission of Honor (main HH #12, coming in July)

Did I miss anything?

I'm starting with War of Honor, since that's really where I began zoning out during the parts that didn't directly involve Honor herself. I might backtrack and read the relevant short stories from the anthologies before War of Honor as well, especially since I never read The Service of the Sword at all.

However, re-reading Echoes of Honor and Ashes of Victory, just sounds like a lot of fun on general principal.

Jonwin and I buy and read any books in the Honor Universe as soon as they come out. Only other series that have hook both of us like Honor are 1635 and anything by Lois McMaster Bujold. Nice that Flint, Fleer and Webber done several projects together.

The politics has always been a major part of the series for me. While I do miss Honor's presence in the Torch Books, I enjoyed them a lot. Jonwin gave me the last book for my birthday, knowing that unlike a fancy dinner out, I would enjoy having a new book more.

If there is any series I would love to see new novel in, it would be the Miles Vorosigan. Darn those babies can't have made Miles settle down that much.

Yeah, where the hell is Miles. This "sharing knife" series wasn't bad, but it wasn't delay new Vorkosigan books for 4 years good...

Did you ever read the S.M. Sterling's "The General" series? 1635 definitly reminds me a bit of that.

Lucky you. I'm only about 1/3 of the way through WoH. Hard to read hefty material with a 2-year-old constantly asking for you to build train tracks with him.

I will not spend $15 on the Mission of Honor e-ARC and then turn around and spend another ~$25 on the hardcover in five months.

I won't. No seriously. I WILL NOT.

Someone talk me down from this, please.

It's up already? wow. Now if only I had a decent e-book reader.

On the other hand, I "LIKE" my relitivly large library. It's a part of who I am, and a showpiece. Having all those books on a little dinky plastic thingy instead just wouldn't be the same.
