I'm past half way through now. I'm at the point where Tenma and everyone is in Prague, and Anna just remembered that "she was welcoming herself home" when that was Johan avoiding the secret police. This second part is just a guess of mine. This is one of the best anime I have ever seen. The curve balls, the suspense. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Your thoughts?
Lastly, the emotion shown is beyond what I've felt in other animes.
Haven't read the manga, but the anime was absolutely incredible. I kid, a little. Monster is a good mystery, suspense, horror series that lives by the strength of its characters. It's very good.
I'd also like to chime in that a friend of mine, who has no interest in anime, found it quite appealing. Monster is quite notable for its complete lack of anime cliches and gags.
I did have one small problem with monster, and it comes at the end. I didn't like the explanation for Johan's goal. The perfect suicide? It didn't seem to make sense, and he did have a clearly explained motive for it. My aforementioned friend was disappointed when he was told this is where the story went, because he was really hoping Johan would be the antichrist. I think that would have been a better direction, minus supernaturalism.

I only read the Manga, and only the fan-translated version before it was released in the US. It was a 4, maybe 5 years ago that I read it, I can't remember most of it, just that he was evil. I don't remember much about a "perfect suicide" Johan was trying to do... I do remember at the end him showing the Doctor what his mother did to him and his sister. The whole "was she trying to save me, or did she mistake me for my sister?"

I'm a bit fuzzy on the ending details, but the "perfect suicide," was Johan's masterplan. It was his ultimate goal, the reason everything in the show occurred. It was the ending. He wanted to erase pretty much everyone who had ever had any involvement with him and then kill himself. I'm not sure why.
Speaking of Monster... I really wish I had kept up with 20th Century Boys. I almost finished it, but the it got licensed and the group I was reading it from stopped. Then the official releases took so long I got side tracked. Now 21st Century Boys is out and I really want to get back to reading it.
That one has a real Antichrist, if you haven't read it yet. Same author. He really enjoys the whole Antichrist thing.
Not an anime/manga, but if you want to read a really good antichrist story, pick up Chosen.

Getting topics like this is why I love this forum. I never would have known about this series otherwise! Now I'm 10 chapters in and thinking "Well, I don't NEED to do any work this morning..."
Edit: Also, the part with the old war vet talking about the boy twin reminds me a lot of a Stephen King short story. I forget the name, but it was one where the kid wants to learn all about the ***** and eventually he starts killing people. I wonder if this will turn out similarly?

Apt Pupil.

That be the one.
On Chapter 60 right now. Pretty cool series, very suspenseful, I'm never sure who's going to die or which random character from the past will show up again. Not really a psychological thriller yet, except for the cop who thinks it's all in Tenma's mind. Would be awesome if it turned out to be exactly that.
On the 5th episode....WOW not what I was expecting from the title. I'm addicted now =) Thanks for letting me know about this great series.
I have been watching it subbed, which is fine, but i heard there is a english dubbed version. I don't have syfy channel, but i cant seem to find it. Not a big deal but it would be nice to just take it all in with out constantly reading. Any links would be great, but like I said, not a big deal.
Just finished this series, and wow. It was good. The ending was pretty thrilling. I still don't get How Johan had so much control over all of these random people. That seemed a bit unrealistic. But the story had a ton of drama and suspense. I would start reading a chapter thinking "Ok, just one..." and then realize I had read four in a row without blinking. Highly recommended!

The author likes the idea of the Antichrist. While Johan may not have been a full embodiment of it in this story, he still had the charisma and a little of the supernatural nature of the Antichrist.

Not really much of a spoiler as it is apparent very early on, but I'll use tags just in case. Johan has ungodly charisma. He understand people. He knows what they like, what they dislike, their fears, their dreams. They have buttons, and he knows how to push them.

Huh, which is funny, as he basically makes Tenma out to be Christ himself. Except with a need to stop the Antichrist.
It's pretty cool to see how Tenma and Johan are two sides of the same coin. They are both crazy charismatic, although Tenma's charisma comes through his actions, whereas, as said here, Johan just knows exactly what buttons to push. They both have fervent supporters who believe in them no matter what. And they're both trying to kill Johan; the difference being that Johan wants to take out a ton of other people first.
Also, while this is definitely a suspense/drama series, it didn't have many twists, per se. It had layers, for sure, but I don't seem to recall any curveballs besides Johan dressing as Anna to kill people. And MAYBE characters continuing to pop up many chapters later It seemed very straight forward overall. I would have liked it better if Lunge's suspicions had been correct and Tenma was Johan and the entire thing was very Fight Club-esque.
Again, great series and definitely worth reading. Not sure how the anime is, I'll have to check it out soonish. I can image the right music can make it freaky as heck at some points.

This is the main one that popped out at me. There were a couple more minor ones. I think it didn't really need any major twists. More or less enough to keep you wary of something might happen, to help with the suspense. At least that's what it did for me.
Saw this on sale at Walmart for $35 for the entire series. Quick opinion: worth getting it? I mean, I could just watch it online, but it might be good for a Christmas gift.

Give it to someone with class, but who isn't used to anime.
