Geekier, maybe. But their shyness tends to keep them from being nearly as annoying.

There are plenty of times that I'd rather deal with screaming girls than sci-fi book collectors.

You can have sex with the girl, but the book collector will run away?

I like how I get rated down for defending Twilight. Oh, poor Trekkie boys, all mad about those mean old Twilight fans. Oh, Boo! They don't even speak Klingon.

I think it was more for insulting the Zammers than it was for defending Twilight.

Back when I was in the (NERD ALERT) Inuyasha fandom, Urd-chan, one of the two founding grandmothers of the fandom (the other was the late Kristine Batey, who we lost to breast cancer), called the 14-year old slavering hordes of fangirls the "teeny-boppers." Us serious fans, the adults, looked down upon them, gently mocked them, and in some cases kicked them out of our forums altogether. I was briefly part of a very mean livejournal committee whose sole purpose was to mock bad Inuyasha fanfics.

I view Twilight fans the same way. When I was 14, I was a serious hardcore Star Wars fan. Okay, I swooned a bit over Harrison Ford, but not to the point where I screamed and fainted at threw my panties at the movie screen. It's undignified.

If we go on the assumption that sex isn't gonna happen(or the girls are under 18 and I don't want it to happen), I'd take having to deal with the sci-fi book nerds every time.

One thing that bothers me about Twilight is its message of glorifying abuse.

Though its easy to see why there are so many opposed after incidents at recent ComicCons where many other groups who came were genuinely being inconvenienced and were unable to attend what they came for as a result (though that was a result more of poor planning and logistics on the staffs part). The 2008 San Francisco mini-riot likely doesnt help matters.

I will give the movies one positive note, the Washington scenery.

Saw this for the sole reason of having seen the first one.

Bored. To. Tears. I want that two and a half hours of my life back.

But to be honest, that was what I was expecting, so I really shouldn't be complaining.

Because nothing that Mazra, et al enjoys is retarded or boring to anyone.

Let me add, I think what really bugs me is how irritatingly hypocritical people are in this thread. I don't give two sh*ts about Twilight but when a bunch of people who have been invested in various forms of fandom and addicted to videogames, give some attitude to teenage girls for being rabid fans of something, it strikes me as retarded.

To most people, writing fanfiction of Inuyasha is ten times dorkier and more obsessive than liking Twilight, particularly as it lacks an adherence to a social phenomenon and doesn't have the attendance social benefit of promoting peer relationships. I'd defend people's right to like any fandom but not when you start giving attitude like you are too good for something.

So much hostility and I get it all! It's all mine! Mine, I tell ya!

Also, confusing hypocrisy with retardation is pretty odd. Furthermore, I think you misunderstand the entire thread, but who's keeping score anyway. It's not the story itself I'm after, it's the mania that has evolved from it. Yes, most of us are avid online game players, and as such we have no right dissing other people's hobbies, but that's not exactly what we are doing. Or at least not what I'm doing. It's the seemingly mindless mania that has sprouted from a mediocre book-turned-movie franchise that leaves me baffled and slightly disturbed. If you search YouTube for any song used in any Twilight movie soundtrack, you'll find pages of semi-desperate female viewers posting how much they love Twilight, how awesome this song is in Twilight, and how hot Edward is. I might be a World of Warcraft fan, but I guarantee you that if you go to a World of Warcraft related video on YouTube, I haven't written pages up and down about how much I love World of Warcraft, how awesome it is listening to this song while playing World of Warcraft, and how hot Tyrande is.

Finally, I don't do fanfiction. Ever.

Writing fanficion of Inuyasha is ten times dorkier and more obsessive than liking Twilight, yes, but writing fanfiction of Inuyasha is equally dorky and obsessive as writing fanfiction of Twilight. If we're going to do comparisons, then we should at least compare like issues.

Yet, I'm annoyed by Inuyasha fanfiction writers a lot less often than I am by Twilight fans. IMO, it's their sheer numbers that's the real problem. I can't go to the bookstore without tripping over squealing, obsessive Twilight fans, but I have to search out annoying otaku if I want to find them(except maybe the little kid Pokefans/Yugifans, but little kids are like that everywhere about something). Hell, I went to the public library the other day and overheard a sigh filled conversation about how dreamy Edward is. The last time I overheard a conversation at random involving any kind of anime fans was when I was in the anime section at the video store.

In case you're wondering, they were talking about whether Hellsing or Hellsing Ultimate was better.

Annabella, Goblin in Disguise wrote:

What the **** is this? Because a couple squealing fangirls come together over something that's "mainstream" that's suddenly better than when "less mainstream" fans are brought together by their media? I met some of my best friends in high school because of anime or videogames. Well, and some of my best friends now became my friends mostly because of our shared anime/videogame interests. Is that not the promotion of peer relationships?

Apparently Poldaran's connection with other anime fanboys much deeper and less annoying than "squealing Twilight fans." To everyone. Really. I mean, his negative appraisal of these fans is totally different than my negative appraisal of him. I mean, he has to hear about it at the library and in public whereas widespread discussion of cool things he likes is always done in a respectable fashion.

I was merely pointing out that you were completely ignoring friendships founded on anime/videogames when you seemed to think friendships fostered by Twilight are a good point of it.

Thanks for completely missing the damn point. It's not that Twilight is discussed less respectably, it's that I can't escape discussion of it. It's that it's damned everywhere. I just mentioned the library because it was the first memory that came to mind. If I had to hear discussions about ANYTHING as often as I do Twilight, it would get a bit grating. Give me some damn variety.

I mean, I understand how people like Ugly want to escape discussion of anime, but at least he can do so. He can turn on the TV or go out in public and have a good chance of not hearing about it. Sure, he has to deal with it here, but this is a set of forums built on the initial premise of video game discussion. It's a high risk zone. If I were hanging around high risk Twilight discussion zones like Hot Topic or a junior high school, then I wouldn't be complaining. But it's freaking everywhere.

Because I find the elitism here annoying and I am hopping back and forth between this and theorizing about a study that I have difficulty conceptualizing b/c it has several principles that need to be integrated in a coherent way. Entertainment, basically.

Ahh, but it all depends on personal opinion, Anna. What you're saying is that it's retarded to complain about the Twilight mania when you're part of another mania (albeit a mania that brings less attention to itself in the general public). While this is true, you're assuming I'm equally obsessed with the video game as the people I'm complaining about are obsessed with Twilight, which isn't the case.

Basically you're just calling me a retarded hypocrite and you're doing so based on personal opinion.

Smooth.

Those involved in Twilight Mania aren't exactly blameless though, theyve gone after people who just didnt like the books, no antagonization at all on the critics side in a number of cases. This isnt unique, they're just as elitest the same as everyone else. Not some special group that needs protecting. It's just business as usual.

It's all fun to watch though.
