Premieres Wednesday, 9/9/09 in theaters. A new Tim Burton movie has me, for one, quite excited. Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and Coraline were all excellent animated movies, and I have little reason to believe 9 will be any less entertaining.

I was original interested in 9. I've heard rumors that it will be much more of an action movie that expected, but that doesn't necessarily imply trouble. I have hopes for 9.

Which leaves more room to be thoroughly disappointed! Smiley: wink

When I first saw the previews for "9" I was certain it was going to be good and had no doubt that Tim Burton was involved before the credits were shown. Not only does T.B. provide some of the best storylines for his animated movies with an equally intense and captivating look and feel but also carries some of the best non-animated movies as well. One may even go as far as saying he's a genius in the movie field.

Definitely looking forward to it. Looks great - worth seeing opening night, and may even have to pick up a copy on 360 (assuming they make a game version).

Anyone seen this yet? The reviews, while not terrible, are not as good as I had hoped. Still looking forward to see it, though...

I've yet to see it, but I already knew it was going to get a bad review.
I hear the story is just not there, but it is good eye candy.

This is correct, saw it tonight.

It's worth seeing: there are cool action sequences, very cute moments, and details of a fantastically vivid imagination. But as a whole, it's just good, not great. The last 2 minutes were pretty dumb - reminded me of Return of the Jedi.

One thing that's nice is at least they kept it short. Too many movies these days run 2.5 hours for no good reason.

I thought the art concept was carried out very well. When characters were up close it was easy to tell that the models and texturing used were not the highest quality, but it never matter because the artistic concepts were exciting and intriguing. A friend actually commented after the movie that the woven texture used on the main characters was the exact same as the default cloth texture in Maya. I'd take quality art style over quality rendering any day of the week.

The movie could have easily been a lot worse, but ended up being enjoyable for me to watch. It survived largely on milieu.

I saw the movie just a couple of hours ago and I quite enjoyed it. It was definitely a bit weird, especially at first, but also interesting. I rather liked the plot as a whole, although the ending was fairly predictable.

I liked the movie, and was actually surprised at how faithful it was to the original short.

Although the movie itself was kind of ruined by me, as at the beginning of the movie this colossal prick turned around, verbally assaulted us, and told us to shut up (the us being a group of friends and I). While reporting him to the manager, we included the fact that we were whispering, and had politely asked him to not use such language (f-bombs and the like) around the children in the theater. His response when the manager got his side of the story? "I asked them to be quiet as nicely as I could."

I wish I was making that up.

Anywho, the movie was on the better side of decent.

Really? I thought it would have been not to turn around and yell curse words at someone two rows behind you for whispering.

Or, if it was really bothering him, he could have at least asked in a polite manner. Not the way he did it.

In most states it is legal to kill someone for talking longer than 10 seconds cumulative in the theater while the movie is playing during the opening week of a given sci-fi/fantasy movie.

In Washington for example, It's actually required by law that the 4 nearest adult males to the person talking use best 2 out of 3 rock paper scissors to determine who strangles you with the emergancy garrote they keep next to the fire extinguisher.

Your surviving immidiate family later has to pay them reperation money for forcing them to strangle you where you sit.

They also get to keep your shoes if they want.

keeps things nice and quiet in the theater AND cuts down on reproduction rates of stupid people.

If someone can hear you two rows back, you're not whispering.

As for myself, I enjoyed the movie. I wouldn't rate it as highly as Burton's other movies, but it would be pretty unrealistic to believe that all his animated films are going to be amazing like Nightmare or Coraline.

The guy shouldn't have cursed at you for sure, but seriously, if he could hear you two rows back, you weren't whispering. Whispering in a movie doesn't bother me, talking does. I myself am guilty of whispering the odd comment here and there to whoever I'm seeing a movie with from time to time.

I find whispering just as annoying as talking, cause then you just hear "pss pss pss psss" like a fricking mosquito in your ear.

Man, your state is stupid. By the time you get to the emergency garrote the person talking will have spotted you and either pulled out a knife/gun/rabid hamster, or they would have left the theater.

If you really wanna get them in the act use your shoelaces/belt/ 1/2" thick '80s gold chain necklace.

I'll concede that we might have been a tad loud. Honestly, I felt like we were at an acceptable volume. But the point I was making was that this guy just turned around and exploded over something relatively minor, when if he had just politely asked, "Hey, could you keep it down a bit?" or something similar, and we would've complied. We're nerds, for crap's sake, not a group of hoodlums who enjoy going to movie theaters and making as much noise as we can. We wouldn't have raised the volume or something just to **** him off.

But that's the last I'll say on this subject.

I wish they had fleshed out the characters in the movie a bit more. I would have loved to see a bit more of 2 or 6. The way the characters acted felt pretty predictable to me.

Also, they should have put in a seizure warning for that one scene with the Cobra machine-thing and the stunning flashes coming out of 2's eyes.

While it would have been nice to see more depth to some of the characters, the fact that they were all pretty one dimensional was probably intentional given that each of them was a different piece of The Scientist's soul.

What bothered me more was the fact that the whole story really made no sense. I walked out of the theater wondering what the point of it all was. The Machine was already lifeless, having had it's soul thingie removed before the movie ever started. Why would The Scientist bother creating The Numbers to kill The Machine when it was already dead?

During the flashback near the end The Scientist said that the machine was flawed because it only had his intellect -and not a complete soul- which is why he gave the rest of his soul to The Numbers. I heard that and assumed that The Numbers were supposed to be absorbed by The Machine and when it got them all it would finally have a complete soul and stop destroying everything. That at least would have made sense. As it was the whole thing seemed totally pointless and stupid. If the point was to just to blow the thing up then why didn't The Scientist or someone else do it years earlier?

I did enjoy the movie over all though. It was really cool despite it's flaws. (and 7 is a total badass.)

Those are some very good points. It doesn't make very much sense for the Scientist to have included the key thingie in 9's body that could reactivate The Machine, why didn't he just destroy it? That would make much more sense. It does make some sense that the Numbers fought against The Machine even if it would have theoretically calmed down once it had absorbed all of them. They are partly human, and most living things will fight against annihilation, even if it would be better off for the world if they were destroyed.

And I agree, 7 was freaking awesome. I'm just glad they didn't try and do a romance between 7 and 9, because that would have been totally lame.
