The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, season two:Follow

#1 Jul 27 2009 at 7:18 AM Rating: Decent
I haven't read the manga for this one, nor did I even see all of season one for that matter, but I liked the first two episodes of season two. Then I saw episode 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. They're all the same, some different views on the same thing, over and over again. They're all stuck in a time loop, experiencing the same thing over and over again, I believe they're at over 1500 times of the same two weeks without knowing it, except one person, they are starting to get severe cases of deja-vu and discover the time loop near the end of it but fail to stop it repeating.

It's an odd principle for an anime, most comments I've found are quite negative, comparing it to the Naruto fillers seems to be common. I don't dislike it though, it's something different.

It's really weird because it's like the went straight through stupid and came out the other side and is kind of interesting now. I don't dislike it, especially after so so much at this point. I just have no idea what the hell the point of it all is. Are they really going to run it eight episodes, or even all the way through the end of august as some people have speculated? Weird as it would be, they may as well at this point.

I believe it's going to be eight episodes. It makes me wonder just what will solve this though, there seems to be three or so points in time heavy with deja vu, hence most likely important. It's just not clear why, although if it's going to be eight episodes, we'll know soon enough.

I got sick of it after the 2nd repetition episode.
It's @#%^ing boring to watch the same dialogue over and over again; I wouldn't mind the episodes if they changed the dialogue in some places.
Stuff that gives the viewer hope that the mystery will be solved, or atleast keeps it entertaining.

Has season 2 wrapped up yet? I was going to start watching it when Dattebayo picked it up, but then they immediately dropped the series.

Higurashi did it well.

Not that I'm aware of.

I'm waiting til it gets dubbed*. Half my enjoyment of the show comes from Crispin Freeman's perfect deadpan delivery of what Kyon says.

*Unless they've already started that too and I don't know about it.

When Dattebayo started doing it I was excited, but then they only did one episode... I've been downloading it every so often but have yet to watch even the first episode.

I always wonder if I'm the only one that does that. I download things, thinking "Hey, this looks interesting. I'll watch it later," and end up with entire series that I haven't touched.

I still have to watch Black Lagoon, D-Gray Man and Gungrave.
I'll get around to them, eventually.

I just finished Code Geass season 2, and I liked the ending. I gotta say I loved finding out the many ways Lelouch would get out of things.
I always had this nagging feeling that he might not have a way out, but then I'd be mildly surprised at his careful planning.

They dropped it as a.f.k. is doing it. There is indeed no real point in two doing it, especially if they feel that a.f.k. is doing it fine as it is.

I find it on mininova every week, so it's not wrapped up I think.

Heh, yea... but at least by then you have an entire series to watch and don't have to wait for new episodes! Smiley: tongue

Is this an attempt at Rashomon type storytelling or does it make you want to kill yourself?

Definitely not Rashomon style; it truly is the same perspective all eight times, just a different view at the scenes displayed. (I mean, the same scenes, just imagine a different camera angle each time)

All in all I didn't think it was bad perse, just a bit like Karlina said, it becomes interesting but just in a strange way.

Apparently there's going to be actual new stuff coming out somewhere in the near future. This was more to kill time until then.

It was also interesting to note the subtle differences each time - Kyon's outfits when he's watching the baseball game, the girls bathing suits and kimonos, how Haruhi decides they can only catch cicadas (although she only mentioned making tempura out of them once), and how strongly Kyon reacts to the final pivotal moment but can't think of what he has to say to make her finally happy to go back to school.

I thought Cicadas and time loops are a BAD thing ;D
When creepy laughter and big knives are busted out, Kyon better haul ***...
