Freaks me out a little. I'm about halfway through the manga series (Yue just accepted Sakura). There seems to be a lot of glorified homosexuality, trangender fun, incest, huge age discrepencies, and paedophilia. I have nothing wrong with the homosexuality or transgender parts (they're typically quite funny). The incest part is a little weird, but mostly overlookable if you don't overthink it (Sakura's bff Tomoyo has a huge crush on her, but is also her cousin). The paedophilia is between a teacher and a student... actually, a few (Rika in Sakura's class and her teacher, Toya and Mizuki, and Sakura's dad being 27 and marrying her 16-year-old mother). The Rika part is probably the freakiest. It seems like her teacher might even return her affections (he calls her lovely and gave her a ring, I think)... but a 20-something teacher loving a 10-year old is more than a little uncomfortable.

That said, interesting story so far. I had to read CCS because all the other CLAMP literature keeps having the characters appear (xxxHolic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles). It's cutesy, and despite all those... "off" themes... it's all innocent so far. I guess we'll see; I doubt we'll be seeing some mad lovin' going on between school kids and teachers any time soon.

The dichotomy in CCS is that 1. All love is innocent and 2. No love is innocent.

That said, a couple of friends of mine cosplay Youya and Yuki (RL guy and girl couple.) They're effin cute together in costume.

Like Sailor Moon was any more innocent. Packed full of incest, pedophilia, and homosexuality. Oh, and a bunch of nude silhouettes of little children. I'm glad I don't think too deeply about anime, I just watch it.

There are a lot of messed up topics in anime. Generally, it seems to either be shown to be completely Innocent and pure, or it is explored in depth and tried to be met with understanding. It's rare for the situations to be exploited like they regularly are in American dramas, pawned off as cheap outrage **** to titillate the viewer or lazily vilify someone.

Not to mention that this kind of thing is rather common in anime and likely just odd to us because of cultural differences(either because it's less frowned upon or we're taking the relationship out of context, I'm really not sure which).

Is Tomoyo her immediate cousin? Maybe she is Sakura's cousin 3 times removed which is just enough to get any from the "related by blood" issue. I never watched the whole series, just a few episodes.

I think second cousin. Their moms were first cousins (and Tomoyo's mom had the major hots for Sakura's mom). The series still goes out of its way to set up that relationship though. Their moms could have easily just been "friends," not cousins.

Tomoyo's love for Sakura is doomed to be unrequited and Tomoyo knows it. So she supports Sakura and loves her in the best way she can, even though she knows Sakura will inevitably end up with Shaoran instead.

I once did a fairly bad fanart of Tomoyo hooking up with a very sad Mei Lin, who also faces the same circumstances because Shaoran is destined for Sakura.

I'll see if I can find out where I buried it.

Edit: Success! Well, the sketch anyway. The finished version is god knows where.

I've only seen bits and pieces of it on network TV so maybe it was cleaned up but my impression was that the skirts ranged in age from 15-17 or so. Which I wouldn't call "little children" (albeit underaged).

Is it different when not shown as part of a kid's morning line-up?

TVTropes says it was heavily censored for America.

Quote:
The North American dub of Sailor Moon is infamous for the amount of censorship and "rewriting" imposed on it by DiC, the company which licensed the show. Few English dubs of anime this side of Carl Macek's "free adaptations" (see Robotech) and the Nausicaa dub Warriors of the Wind have been more despised by fans when it comes to butchery in the name of making a show "acceptable" to an American audience. Whole episodes were thrown out, plot lines excised root and stem, and entire segments rewritten from scratch to shoehorn it into DiC's intended audience; additionally, An Aesop was conjured up out of each episode and stitched on at the end in order to comply with FCC regulations for "educational content" in children's television (although this was only done to the Classic and R series). Uncensored versions of the series were offered first for S and SuperS as they aired on Cartoon Network by Geneon (then Pioneer), and for a brief period in 2003-2004, the first two series were offered uncensored by ADV Films before going out of print again. Toei has quietly pulled the license to the franchise worldwide and non-bootlegged DVDs now go for a great deal of money online.

I haven't seen the uncensored version, or even much of the censored version, but there is this.

Huh. Apparently from episodes I've never seen. I've only seen the five chippies.

Chibi Moon is the daughter of (OH CRAP HE'S GONNA USE THE US NAMES!) Serena and Darien. She shows up in the second? season. Doesn't become a scout until much later, I think... unless I miss my guess, she becomes evil first. I never got into the third or so season, but I knew she eventually got a sailor outfit.

... hey, I was like 12, give me a break.

Yeah, Chibi-Usa was a season 2 monstrosity. And then there is ChibiChibi, who is two years old. She never had an animated transformation sequence made, because watching a naked two year old transform is even beyond the pale for the Japanese.

The "Inner Senshi" - Usagi (Serena), Ami (Mercury), Makoto (Jupiter), Rei (Mars), and Mina (Venus) were all 14-16 in the TV series. They started out as 8th graders, and by the time the 5th season rolls around they are starting high school (10th grade.) The "Outer senshi" are mostly older; Uranus and Neptune, the lesbians, are seniors in high school, and Pluto is in college. Saturn is the youngest of the planetary senshi, only 10 or 11 or so.
