So. Harry Potter VI came out.

Just got back from the midnight showing. There were less people cosplaying than I thought there would be.

I thought it was pretty good, but couldn't top my personal favorite, the 4th movie. And it had some decent fight scenes, but nothing topping Creepy Old Guy vs. Even More Creepy Old Guy in the 5th movie. However, fight scenes weren't the focus, it seemed more focused on the characters and their development, especially the Ron/Hermione relationship and the aftermath of Dumbledore's death. HOLYCRAP SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!!!! WHO KNEW RITE?

Opinions?

I've never really been a fan, so I doubt I'll be running out to the theater to see it. Maybe I'll toss it on the old queue when it hits DVD.

Unlike the last movie, the Vatican approves of this movie, because it gives a clear delineation between "good" and "evil."

Who knew the Pope was a closet HP fan?

Hopefully I'll go see it soon. Not too sure. From reviews I've heard that it totally sucks if you are a hard-line book follower, because lots of details are changed, the ending tower scene is totally lame, no one ever really bothers explaining the Horcruxes until the end, the Pensive is underutilized, Riddle's story is mostly ignored, and an entire scene is added where the Burrow is burned down at Christmas by Bellatrix and Fenrir, who then battle Harry in a swamp. And no one even bothers to throw out the fact that Fenrir is a werewolf.

I hate divergence.

That said, it sounds like the movie is pretty humorous and very well shot, so it'll probably be worth seeing.

The story lost most of its pull on me when all those people died in the last book. There are a lot of bonds being tied with a lot of characters in the books and those ties are just ripped to shreds in the last one. I mean, one of the Weasley twins dies? Lupus and that morphing girl dies? After becoming parents? One of those stupid brutes following Draco around dies? I remember those two being annoying in the first books, but if I remember correctly, he dies by fire. Okay, chill with the bedtime story there, J.K. Even Snape dies, which is epic fail in my book.

He's the most awesome of them all. At least in the movies. Alan Rickman is awesome.

Well...

(iirc) only Taks died, not Lupin. Still, lots of death, but then I think that particular tale would have been pretty cheesy had there not actually been a body count.

Having not read the books but handly having some one who did went with me to watch the movie. it was good better then the 5th but my friend told me that the half blood prince book wasn't nearly as good as the rest of the books. He was surprised how good the movie was and i enjoyed the movie my self accept for the ending sucked for me.

Epic.

Went and saw the movie last night. It was good.
The ending was kind of silly/lame (Big D's death). The book's way would have been better, imo.

But for it being a Harry Potter film, and it having to be done in a few hours, it was good.

However, I was more happy about preview for Where the Wild Things Are. I've known about the movie for awhile now, it was just nice to see a longer preview that showed the creatures. Hope this turns out to be a good movie and not a total bomb. It was a fav book when I was a little kid.

They're both quite dead; it even says they're lying next to each other in death.

While I don't think this movie will be AMAZING, I think the next one should be better. I am totally going to see it JUST for the Battle of Hogwarts.

I just got back from seeing it about an hour and a half ago. I really enjoyed it actually. The teenage awkward angst cracked me up a lot, as did the scene when Harry takes the luck potion. These parts weren't really funny in the book, but they were in the movie and that cracked me up. I do agree that the scene where the Burrow catches fire was kind of stupid, but overall it didn't detract too much from the movie. I feel like they could have included a scene that actually was in the book instead, maybe the memory of the Marvolo's house?

In any case, I enjoyed this movie much more than the 5th one. I'm still pissed off that they had Cho be the one to rat out the DA when in the book it was her friend that did it, not to mention that in the book the kids never got caught and had detention... they all escaped. Adding unimportant crap pisses me off a lot less than changing important stuff.

My review: All in all, I came away feeling... unfulfilled. Disappointed even. Reviews on the movie have gone either way; some people rave it is the best so far, some people think it fell quite short. I'm in the latter category. The movie itself LOOKS great. I cannot complain about that. The dialogue, to me, seemed not as good as usual... too jerky in places. Again characters acted in ways I did not expect. Lavendar was spot-on at some times, and totally over-the-top others (even more than in the books, I felt). Actually, thinking about it more and more, maybe she was pretty good in her role. Harry was in love with Ginny the entire time. THE BURROW BURNED DOWN. Ok, ok, I know I need to put canon aside when looking at a movie, but... ugh.

And there was a total lack of action. The ONLY part I really felt was truly epic was Dumbledore frying Inferi. Dude, when the zombie apocalypse begins I am totally calling on Dumbledore. However, the end of the movie pretty much sucked. Snape isn't shown to be a bad guy; he purposely doesn't attack Harry and spares his life several times. IMO in the tower he should have Petrified him (or it should have been like in the book, which would have been MUCH better). The worst injustice was there was no funeral scene at the end! The entire ending is so disappointing. It's just a nice sunset and a chat. UGH.

Neville has exactly two lines in the entire movie; once as a butler (added in to the movie) and once wishing Ron good luck. Out of all of Draco's friends, only Blaise is spoken of by name; and that's because the actor died while filming IMO.

That said, some acting is done really well. Luna's actress is GREAT in her role. I think she's spot-on, and probably my favorite character to see on screen. Harry himself didn't do a bad job. Slughorn's actor is the same guy who played Harold Zidler in Moulin Rogue, and I kept expecting me to say "Invest? Invest!"; however he should have been much fatter. Dumbledore was totally a mixed bag for me. First of all, he doesn't have his glasses in more than half of the scenes, including his death. I know it's a small point, but Rowling always made a point to talk about his half-moon glasses. That said, the character totally LOOKED the part of Dumbledore in my mind... but his voice grates on my nerves. I think it may be the accent (which I'm starting to think is Irish, not British) that has a habit of falling off at key moments. Also, Ginny (Bonnie Wright) looks a lot like Kirsten Dunst when her hair was red for Spiderman; anyone else see it? And I laughed that she was taller than Harry!

In conclusion, the movie felt like a 2 1/2 hour filler episode. Very little action, very little plot movement, but a lot of fun awkward teen romance stuff. It's not a BAD movie... it's just not a fulfilling one. And I wished for Levicorpus to be used! That would have been right in line with the humor shown throughout the movie.

Rating as a general movie: 6/10. As a HP movie: necessary to see, but probably will be the worst in the series.

I just saw it today. No, I haven't read the books, and I don't usually watch the movies until they came out on TV, but my family wanted to see it so I went with them.

I didn't hate it, but I was more impressed by the preview of 2012. I think I'll like this movie. I liked Knowing, and it seems similar, with more destruction...

I'm sure that movie will suck balls but it will suck balls in the prettiest of ways.

As for the movie, I just saw it with my kid. Never read the books and only seen snatches of the previous flicks. It was ok... not terrible and actually amusing in places. I think Harry should have totally hooked up with the weird albino chick (whom my son informs me was Luna) who was the best part of the movie.

She's only 17!

(Which is still allowable for me in FL, incidentally).

And I agree with Jophiel, Luna was probably the best actor in the movie.

Good thing 16 is legal here. Not that that even matters. I'd hit it even if it wasn't.

Also she turns 18 in less than a month.

I didn't think I'd care as much about deviations from the book... but it was just silly some of the changes they made. They could have at least had more action! Smiley: motz

Not to mention 16 is legal in the UK as well. :-) Luna is freaking awesome, she's one of my favorite characters. And yeah, the actress who plays her is freaking amazing.

I didn't get to see that trailer. There was a trailer for 2012, Sherlock Holmes, Where the Wild Things Are, Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs. Then some crappy movie from the makers of Spy Kids where a boy finds a rainbow colored stone that grants wishes.

Hmm, I like the sound of the music used, but when I looked up the full song, the vocals/lyrics on it just ruined it for me. At least they didn't include the vocals in the trailer :)
