I've found a software on the net that is free and powerful.
It lets you stream music to any device hocked up to the local network including ps3 and xbox360 and lets you stream all the media file as if it was on your ps3, xbox360.

What does this do that an s video cable can't?
You can already stream music and videos to your Xbox 360 from a Windows based PC. This is a built in function, out of the box.

It's actually designed to work originally with Windows XP Media Center edition.
But it works with Windows XP and Vista without issues. I am currently sharing all my media and I'm using Windows XP Professional.

Not exactly the right forum, but then I'm not complaining.
If I install that program, would I need to directly connect my PS3 with my computer (and which cable is needed for that?) or is the fact that both are connected to the internet through the same router enough?
I am seriously out of my depth with most things IT.

No all you need is a router so that the files can be shared with anyone on the routers network, that includes the ps3 pc and any other devices.

No all you need is a router so that the files can be shared with anyone on the routers network, that includes the ps3 pc and any other devices.
So I basically would only need to install the program and find the mediaserver on my ps-3? At this point, it's not finding anything.
When I did it I installed it and it started to search my hard drive for media files, you might have to do this in the software manually.
play around with the settings and once you got it all sorted then start up to ps3 and it will be there.
In the settings I picked the playstasion 3 for the media play back device
In the Library tab you can add folders and this should show up on the ps3 once it scanned that folder

I'll digg around a bit further, no luck so far but I'll check the site's faq's to see if there's something else I might need to do.

if you are having a problem with it there is another alternative which is specially designed to work with the pc and ps3.
Java Ps3 Media Service
You will have to add folders to it in the navigation/sharing tab other wise you will have all hard drive viewable on the ps3.
So just add your music video and picture folder to the list.
And just like the other program you can also use the ps3 buttons to download it from the pc to the ps3, I downloaded a 1.5gig movie in less than 10mins doing it that way, just seems faster and less hassle than using a usb stick or card etc...
Also these are some of the other links to other components that you might need to get the kind of streaming you would like.

That Java one did the trick! I got full access to my hd now on my ps3. Just very, very, very slow
avi files don't seem to run on the ps3 so far and music is doable but stops every 3 seconds to load for 20. I'll check out those other links you offered, thanks!
Sounds like you network card on the pc is not a fast one or that the router can not handle fast connection.
Old network cards and router might only be able to handle a connection of about 10meg (was like that about 5 years ago for me on my old pc).
You might want to use the task manager and mounter you connection speed as you use the ps3 to download a movie file from your pc to the ps3, and see if the speed is reaching its cap or not.
You might want to check your router and find out what kind of speed it can handle.
All I know is it worked for me and I was able to download a 1.5gig movie file to the ps3 in less than 10mins and that was going at about 85Mbs

In theory the router should be able to handle 20Mbs, upload from my pc to the ps3 of 330 megabytes took over an hour yesterday although I've got a 512kbs upload. (the 20mbs download and 512kbs upload are the limits due to my connection package, expensive for what I get but not easy to find cheaper as yet in Belgium)
I've had downloads from the internet of over 1.5 megabytes per seconds, but never all that much faster.
If your using it wirless then the top speed will be about 5 to 11mbit per secound.

Tirith is right, Windows apparently does this natively. Unfortunately some of my .wmv files don't play correctly, and my XBox can't see a whole folder of media that I can see perfectly, while sitting here at the computer.
