Like? Dislike?

I'm just about done the first season (been playing catch up On Demand) & the 2nd starts next week.

I like it. I can't exactly explain why. Ya, the copious amounts of nekkid chicks helps. As does HBO replacing the best bad *** homosexual on TV (Omar from The Wire) with a worthy successor (Lafayette kicks ***!).

But what else?

I can't really say. But overall, I'm enjoying it. Thoughts?

I was under the impression the second season started this weekend, Sunday night. Yep, hbo.com says 1 day to go, Sunday June 14 at 9 PM.

Anyhoo...

I'm liking it better than the books it's based on. Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels are okay, I guess, if you're bored for an afternoon and want some brain candy. The series, however, effin' rocks. They've managed to capture an element of Southern gothic that I absolutely love, their raunchy, dirty take on the deep South just rings so much more true (based on my experiences with visiting family in Arkansas) than Harris' kinda cutesy version. From the opening credits onward (and how seriously kickass is that credit sequence?) it just rocks.

The addition of Tara (well, not so much addition as a complete re-working of a minor and forgettable character in the books into a major player) is fabulous and it's a character I really connect with.

Oh, and I'd TOTALLY do Sam long before Bill. Personal preference there.

The downside, I have to wait till the kidlet is in bed to watch it, which is going to bite into my WoW time. He actually blurted out his first f-word courtesy of my watching the first season while he was awake (and apparently in a much more alert language-acquisition place than I had assumed him to be.) Jason yelled his favorite word, and Tristan yelled it right back. Yeah.

I won't read the books. Made that mistake with Twilight.

I have 2 episodes left & then Season 2 starts Sunday.

If only HBO would put em' up On Demand a week ahead of time like the used to do with The Wire.

Emo/RL Vampires no thanks; if it isn't rare or mysterious it's not a vampire. Pardon the Star Wars analogy but they're like the Sith, if you have only one or two of them they appear all-powerful and bad ***. However, you get a whole bunch of them together and they no longer look tough, they're just another drop in the sea of mediocrity. If you flood a story with a bunch of the same thing then it no longer becomes unique and noteworthy, it becomes an everyday thing that you will just wind up ignoring.

Hmm, well, good thing I didn't trot out the spoiler from the books I was tempted to expose there, since (book spoiler, implied show spoiler)

in the book, it was indeed Lafayette in the back of the detective's car.

True Blood is fun. The first episode of the second season makes me glad that they didn't follow the book.

Know what was weird?
Last 3 episodes of the first season had 0 sex scenes.

The new season started ok, but I thought it dragged a bit. Looking forward to Evan Rachel Wood showing up later in the season & Lafayette possibly becoming a vamp.

Bill's new pet really is annoying & Eric is just starting to get cool. I liked the actor that played him in Generation Kill, so hoping he plays prominently.

I asked the GF- WTF is going on with the tinfoil on his head.

She looked at me, disgusted, & informed me he was getting his hair dyed.

Highlighted, actually.

In the books, Eric is supposed to be a super sex bomb, but I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to see him that way now. Not that he was my type anyway. About the only attractive male on this show is Sam, for my money.

IDK, If I had a ******, I'd let Alexander Skarsgård in it.

Agreed. I enjoyed the first season all the way up until the last few episodes. Then it started to get really World of Darkness-y. I told my friend if they even hinted at Wraiths or Mummies I was done. Vampires + ignorant rednecks works; don't mess with it. Thankfully it seems they caught themselves and stemmed the tide with the first episode of season 2. Here's hoping they don't @#%^ it up.

So the new waitress is a Minotaur?

Neat?

Good episode, but I'm still annoyed every time Jason is on screen. I think that's kinda the point of the character, but still...

Still waiting on the newest episode to be upped on Megavideo. Takes too long for the DIVX videos to load on Ninjavideo (although they're usually available there first). Decent show.

In the books he's not nearly so wantonly self-destructive, but on the show it does make for some interesting tension.

That's absurd. Women can't be minotaurs.

I have read all of the books but I had a hard time making it past the first episode of season one? Is it worth a second chance? The Cuts to the cook ( I think it was the cook ) really got on my nerves.

It's a VERY good series, but you just have to accept that it takes a number of minor characters from the books and makes them major, such as Tara (who I don't believe is African-American and doesn't even HAVE a family in the books) and Lafayette ("the cook" you don't like, who, if the show followed the books, would have started the second season dead.) And as far as I'm concerned, those are changes for the better--they are both very compelling characters who round out the series.

Edit: Finally got around to watching last night's episode.

Damn, I really was hoping Lafayette would indeed be made into the kick-*** vampire he offered to become.

I never watch this show when it is on considering Sunday's I'm usually pretty busy in the evenings. Monday's I watch Weeds on Showtime so that night is out as well.. It leaves me with Tuesday's to watch it OnDemand. My question....

Where was last weeks episode? After "Scratches"? Is my Comcast forgetting one? /sigh

#24 Jul 12 2009 at 9:48 PM Rating: Good
They skipped July 5th, new episode was tonight.

Decent episode, but I didn't feel the plot moved forward all too much.

So, the new waitress knows Sam's a shapeshifter. I think she's the Minotaur-ish thing that attacked Sookie. Tara finally fell under Maryanne's "spell".

And wtf is she? Anna said she's some kinda greek deity, but it appears she's part pig? IDK...

Best part was Lafayette after drinking Eric's blood. Unfortunately, I'm aware of the discrepancy between his TV character & the book's & according to IMDB, he's only in one more episode...

boo!!!

Didn't like this episode much either, despite the presence of Anna Paquin's boobs from a different angle.

I love Trueblood. However, I'm not in it for the main characters. They're fine and all, but the side characters are nearly always more interesting. Lafayette and Eric are my favorites.
