Battle Royale, hell yaFollow

#1 May 15 2009 at 8:30 AM Rating: Decent
40+ japanese 9th graders are stuck on an island, given weapons, and have to kill each other until there is only 1 left

action and gore throughout, flimsy plot, english subtitles

perfection!

this is the movie that "Mean Guns" could have been (ex-cons trapped in a prison, last man standing gets 1 mil) but ultimately failed to be

if you can find this movie, and you like anime such as Gantz or Berserk, you will love it (it's not anime, its regular movie)

well, not so regular

without spoiling too much, some of the weapons given out are crossbow, sickle, pot lid, binoculars, gps tracking device, machine gun, shotgun, pistols, and one poor guy gets a japanese paper fan

did i mention the exploding necklaces?

try it, you'll like it

Seen it, and it was a manga first then a movie. Make sure you watch Battle Royale II, more killing and a lot more Anti-America/Government messages.

Edit: Oh yeah "The Condemned" was a blatant rip-off of this movie with a few changes.

I really hated that second movie, it pales compared to the first one. (personal opinion ofcourse)

I couldn't even get behind the anti-America sentiments and I'm European! Smiley: grin Seriously though, where did that come from anyway, what was the point of that?

Battle Royale Manga.
(A lot of it is NSFW)

Movie is pretty good (2nd one doesn't suck, but first sticks a bit closer to the manga). The manga is way more over the top than the movie though. There's even a sequel to the manga (but the "cutesy" art, given the subject matter, kinda takes away from the plot methinks).

It was actually a prose book before it was manga or movie, though.

I think the Gantz manga is better though. Gantz's art is some of the best Japanese comic art I've ever seen.

I've seen that first season of Gantz, great show but I still don't get it. I only got the first two manga books of Gantz, been meaning to get all the rest of them.

Here's all of Gantz.

New translations are up every other Wednesday.

The Anime barely hits all of the first part. The manga really doesn't even start to get good until just after the Anime goes "filler" in part "2" of the anime.

Completely agree. I mean, unless you really like violence; I felt like the second one was gorier. It's been several years since I've seen it though, and I only saw it once. I've probably watched the original three or four times (pro tip: if you're having a co-ed movie night, make sure the girls are ok with extreme gore. Oops. Only made that mistake once!)

And BR ROCKS. There's so much dark comedy in it as well. I loved that the battle ax is "Super lucky!" I remember reading the manga, or some of it, years ago... I think it explained the background of some of the characters a lot better.

My friend dressed as him for Halloween. It was sort of awesome.

Also, I might be remembering wrong, but didn't the psycho guy (what we called the guy who did for fun) get the fan in the movie? Then he stole the guns and slaughtered everyone? No need to feel bad for him :-P

Yeah, Kiriyama was ambushed by 4 people, and was shown to have a paper fan as his weapon.

He came out of that confrontation with a Pistol, Machine Gun and a pair of Grenades. Decided to leave the nunchucks though.

In the movie, someone gets it, but Kiriyama eventually gets it, and chops the head off of the kid with the bulletproof vest.

I really enjoyed the movie but I thought the manga was much better. It's a lot more adult themed (18+ / keep far away from kids) and fleshes out all of the characters so that they are not just some random kid being killed. Kiriyama is a lot more interesting also. He isn't just some psycho who wanted to play for fun. He was actually in the class and decided to play to win because he flipped a coin. His personality is very cold, isolated and contemplating which makes him a lot more scary imo.

The headmaster is also 100% hatable with nothing funny about him.

I kinda liked that fact that no one knew anything about him. He just shows up and goes crazy on everyone... I thought it made him more mysterious... I will have to check out the manga though. I haven't read any manga in years... Thanks for the recommendation! =)

Just a heads up though, the gore and sex levels are through the roof in the manga. With the backgrounds on the characters, don't be surprised if you actually feel bad for certain ones when they do go. :(

Didn't he have a head trauma that made him unable to feel any emotions, and at the end he got hit hard enough to fix the trauma so he died happy?
