So, I'm in the middle of reading The Count of Monte Critso by Alexandre Dumas, and I ended up stumbling upon the anime "Gankutsuou". To quote TV Tropes, Gankutsuou is basically "Alexandre Dumas' famous novel, The Count Of Monte Cristo, set far into the future and viewed through an anime-and-LSD filter."

Anyone seen it? I'm watching the first episode right now, and so far I like the art. A lot. They use the rarely seen style of having things colored by texture, then they stay motionless even when the colored object moves.

I just hope they can translate the intricacy of the plot from the book over to the anime well.

I've seen seen it, and it is a very good series. I rated it an 8, or around 8.5, on a scale to 10. Having not read the novel I cannot tel you how true it is Dumas' work, but for what it is, it is good.

It was the first of a series that I'm calling "Gonzo's Tour of Western Lit." (Their second in that series was 'Romeo x Juliet' which was set in a fantasy universe with flying horses, floating continents, and OCD humanoid tree spirits.)

I'm wondering what they'll tackle next. The texture animation was indeed very trippy, so Gankutsuou joins the ranks of series that are best viewed drunk for maximum effect.
