And, you know, unintentional incest that becomes intentional incest.

Better off dead and one crazy summer are obscure movies along the lines of the breakfast club, and launched john cusack's career as an actor. Also Versus, by Ryuhei Kitamura is the japanese version of the evil dead films, and Chris Marker's la jetee does science fiction perfectly in 25 or so minutes and with still frames.

It's a tragedy. I don't have to like incest to think the film is awesome. That's like saying I need to like regicide to appreciate Macbeth.

"A tale of two sisters" if anyone wants more Korean horror movies of a good quality. (imo anyway)

And I almost forgot Belgium's top absurd and weird b-movie "C'est arrivé pres de chez vous". Basically proving that for good movies, the Walloons are still number one.

I can't say that I actually liked, A Tale of Two Sisters but I can recommend a different Korean film called, "H".

There were a few parts that I was ready to turn off the movie because it was slow but I'm definately glad I finished it.

I'm reminded of "Wings of Desire". 1987, by the director Wim Wenders. Original German title translates out to The Heaven/Sky Over Berlin.

It's a gorgeous, gorgeous little contemplative film. It's about two angels who companionably hang out together, while they do their job of contemplating and recording what goes on on Earth. No humans but children can see them. From angel perspective, the world is in monochrome, and from human perspective it's in colour.

They sit around in peculiar places, like on top of lofty statues on obelisks. And they watch some mortals in particular. So it's the angels' story, and it's the story of some particular human people, as well as a story about the city of Berlin.

Eventually they meet a human who used to be an angel himself, but became mortal.

I'm not telling any more of the story, because I don't want to give away the ending.

If you think you know a film that sounds like this one, you'd be right. Wings of Desire has in part or in pieces inspired more than a few other movies since.

Personally I found Wings of Desire to be an intense and riveting movie, for one where very little happens in it. Also I fell in lust with one of the angels. But then I'm prone to do that.

Also, if you haven't seen A Fish Called Wanda, you suck and you need to remedy that.

Wristcutters

Its a dark comedy centered around an afterlife where suicide victims are sent to.

Very funny and also features some great music (Gogol Bordello). Their lead singer is supporting actor.

I saw the topic of this thread in the active threads part of the forum list and just had to come in and mention that "Obscure non blockbuster" is redundant.

For some reason no one ive ever talked to has seen equilibrium....im not sure why as its got some big timers in it, like christian bale. Really good film, reminds me of the matrix in some ways. Thought id throw this out there just because ive never heard anyone but me who has seen it.

I've seen it. It's not bad, but it's forgettable. I remember the gun-fu sequences, but not much else from it. If you haven't seen Gattaca either, you should.

If You haven't seen Dark City, you totally should. Science Fiction anachronistic 40's/50's Mystery Noir. Adore it so much.

Also Nexa is SO right about City of Lost Children. One of the most extraordinary films ever made. A simple and amiable circus strongman befriends an orphan girl and sets out to help her find her kidnapped brother, in a world full of the insane and the criminal. Totally weird in a totally mesmerising way.

The previous film by the same crew, Delicatessen, is also weird and wonderful. An apartment of stranded people in a post-apocalyptic world live out their entire lives in the one building, taking in strangers as they come.

Glad to see I wasn't alone in thinking this! I first saw the movie expecting it to be really dumb... but it turned out pretty creative and fun. I was pleasantly surprised; enough so that I bought a three-in-one DVD with it on it a couple of months ago.

Also, City of God was phenomenal. Though it did receive some Academy Award nominations (Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Writing - 2004), it's still not a very well-known film IMO.

Had to add this one, saw it on Showtime Beyond last night. The movie is called Subterano, eight people are trapped in an underground parking garage trying to survive against the villain and his army of nanomachine weapons. It was very entertaining despite the negative reviews.
