There are certain movies that I consider classics in the SciFi genre:

Star Wars: A New Hope
2001: A Space Odyssy
Silent Running
Soylent Green
Planet of the Apes
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Abyss
Day of the Triffids
The Thing (John Carpenter's)
The Day the Earth Stood Still
War of the Worlds (Byron Haskin's)
The Matrix
The Invisible Man
King Kong
Frankenstien
The Time Machine
Jason and the Argonauts
Night of the Living Dead (might actually be Horror genre)
Close Encounters
Alien
Blade Runner
Predator

What would you add?

Of those listed I've seen:

Star Wars: A New Hope (duh)
and
Alien (don't really remember it, I don't do scary stuff very well)

I'd add Sphere, and I've got nothing else ;o

I definitely agree with Third Encounters. That was such a wonderful alien movie. In fact, a couple years ago i went and visited Devil's Tower, the big plateau in the movie.

I havent seen Alien Cargo, or Akira (anime, right). Tron was such an awesome movie when I saw it at the theaters. I think they are going to do a remake of it, soonish. As for Serenity, I am still a little irritated that the movie wasnt enough to revive the series. It was an excellent series.

I can live with that Smiley: smile

And if anime is added, of the correct genre naturally, besides Akira (which is excellent) I'ld add Ghost in the Shell too. It might not be my favourite, prefer the second one myself, but it is a classic.

I remember as a kid, watching a ton of those Japanese anime/live action shows (I am from Hawaii). I think one of them was Raideen. Very good anime for that time frame. A few years later came Starblazers, followed by Captain Harlock. Then several years later came Robotech. All of these are excellent Anime. I would probably include Robotech in this list.

Forbidden Planet
Robinson Crusoe on Mars

Surprised no one has mentioned either of those, saw them at (what passed for) the local theatre
way back in the mid-60's and several years ago managed to get hold of a VHS tape of each.

Star Wars

Anyone who saw that in a theatre in 1977 is probably still recovering.
Even the style of the opening credits had people going "WOW" and when the words:
"A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." crossed the screen, we knew we were
in for something very different.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Certainly in the top ten but suffers from "what the hell is going on?".
It only made sense to me after I had read the book and it took so long to pick
up the book because the movie was "what the hell is going on?"

The Andromeda Strain

Loved the book, loved the movie which was very faithful to the book.

Awful movie. I've watched it like 20 times.

Yeesh, you have King Kong but leave out Godzilla? With its dire warnings of nuclear disaster and nature unleashing its wrath upon a mankind uncaring of the planet's destruction?

I'll assume that you mean the 1960 George Pal version of The Time Machine. Any answer besides "You are absolutely correct" and I'm going to hire some morlocks to sneak into your room at night and **** in your hair.

Well, there was a God awful version in the 1970's as well. Plus he has contemporary stuff like The Matrix in his list.

That is one of the things I pretend doesn't exist, kind of like the second Highlander film, it just never happened.

As for the Matrix that does seem a little out of place, but give it a few more years and it will probably be seen as a classic.

Compared to the later movies, that second movie can be considered a masterpiece.

At least it had the quality of being enjoyable, if the viewer turns of his brain.

If you're talking about the Highlander I would have to say besides The Source, another movie that doesn't exist, the second film is clearly the worse.

Highlander I is without a doubt better than the sequel, but the third and fourth Highlander movie are truly bad, they are the ones that make the second movie seem fairly good.

Also, most importantly, the single most important Sci-Fi movie ever made: Ice Pirates.
