Hullo, book forum.

I recently purchased the Amber Cronicles by Roger Zelazny. It's complete with all 10 books, and all together it's over 1,200 pages. I have so far read the first two books and am into the third one. I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I picked the omnibus up, but I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised.

So I'm curious if anyone else has read these books, or others by Mr. Zelazny, and what you think?

I'm rather pissed he died before he finished the series, but the guy they got to finish it for him did a decent job.

I think I am actually going to pick this series up from the library, it doesn't sound to bad, considering the 'Hero' has flaws himself and isn't perfect.

I thank you Belkira for the "showing-azezel-a-new-to-read-book'.

I've always liked Zelazny, especially his Amber tales. It is indeed a shame he died, at the young age of 54 I believe, as it is clear that the story would have been continued imo. It's a decent ending as it is now, but so much potential for a lot more. A magnificent read all in all.

Still, Betancourt did do a good job indeed with the prequel trilogy.

As for other books by Zelazny, I like "My name is Legion", "Lord of Light", "Eye of Cat",... "Lord of Light" is a very tough book to read though, but very good. Based on Indian mythology. There are hints of native American mythology in "Eye of Cat", which is a bit more surreal.

Hard to go wrong with a Zelazny book, apart from for instance "Deus Irae" which he wrote with Philip K. ****. Personal opinion naturally.

I love it when books are all published in one huge volume. I'm picking this one up!

How big would the book be if they did the Wheel of Time books into one omnibus volume......

That'll fade when you get to about the 5th book.

Why do you have to be right?

I am currently putting the Amber series on hold. I got burnt out. Smiley: frown

Book 5 is about the worst of the series (relatively speaking) but it picks up again with book 6.

Taking a break from a series like this can be advisory, makes returning to them all the better!

I read those many years ago. They were excellent. Hmmmm, maybe I will have to pick them up and reread them.

I have this at home but I only read the first hundred pages or so before I put it down. I was quite confused and wasn't sure I liked it. I'm a big fan of Robin Hobb, and she does first person as well (it is first person, right, it's been yeas since I even looked at it.) Is this something I should try again, or were there those who put it down as quickly as I did?
