Children of Hurin: book discussion. (spoilers!)Follow

I'm not sure how many are still interested in debating this book, but doesn't hurt to start a thread about it!

In short: I didn't like it. Although this could be merely my increasing lack of interest in fantasy or just an extension of what I felt when I read "The Lord of the Rings" itself. That one too was a book I had to drag myself through some parts. (not "The Hobbit" which basically reads itself, very fun book)

But either way, it's a book I'll never reread. The language is archaic, could be the translation but I doubt it, and the story just isn't all that interesting. (which ofcourse LoTR doesn't suffer from, to say the least)

It reads a bit like a bible, which perhaps is done to keep a reference to "The Silmarillion" but it seriously bothered me.

I didn't like it so much either. I felt that Tolkien's son tried way too hard to make the book readable. In comparison to LoTR, Children of Hurin was a picnic. There was still a massive influx of characters who I had trouble keeping straight throughout the entire time I was reading. I didn't have that problem with LoTR because I was actually interested in that book.

I would rate it higher than the Silmarillion just due to the fact that it was actually readable. But all in all a very disappointing book. Yay incest! Smiley: oyvey

In the beginning it read very much like the Silmarillion, but half way through it gets better to read.

I also don't see the point in publishing this book. There was hardly any content added that wasn't already in the Silmarillion.

Exactly, it just seems like a well timed attempt to cash in on the movies.

I wouldn't myself, the Silmarillion isn't really a finished work but it added more to the world of Middle earth than this one.

I got this book from the library and I didn't care for it too much. Like others said you didn't really learn anything that you didn't know before if you followed the lure.

I thought the book was good. I really like Tolkien though (spent 4 years playing a LotR MUD even..).

I believe it goes like this: The Silmarillion was the story he always wanted to work on. The Hobbit and LotR he wanted to do too, but did more because thats what the publishers wanted him to write. He wrote the Silmarillion sorta like the Bible...more like an overview of stuff that happened, not an actual story. And of the stories in the Silmarillion Turin's was his favorite, so he wanted to write that story version of Turin's tale. Hence: Children of Hurin.

My aunt's old dog was named Húrin.

Always struck me as an odd name. Wasn't until I read the books that I found the meaning. She's an avid reader as well.

I haven't read the published book (yet) but have read every other rendition of it. I'd love to debate about it... although I'm not sure what could be debated about (story-wise at least)

I do think this would make a great movie.
