this was a question someone posted on another site i visit, so i thought i would ask it here as well. i was just wondering why you read fantasy (and science fiction) stories?

for me, i love the escape they offer. i can read about anything else, but there's nothing i love more than the magic a fantasy book offer, lol (i know, not the best answer, but it's my excuse, lol :p). i also write (for fun, as i'm too sacred of my work being criticized by strangers/friends), so reading fantasy stories help fuel that imagination of mine :p.

It gives me a broader imagination. I have learned a ton that not a lot of people in my school know. I to love the magic in it and it helps me get away from real life.

I read many genre of books, i would say that i am just a compulsive reader, i like inteligant writing and i think the fantasy writers have more scope with plotlines than standard writers.

That said there are some pretty vanilla write by numbers authors in the fantasy market aswell, Terry Brooks and J K rowlings spring to mind from the well known novelists.

I like a book that makes me think and say "Oh thats clever" once in a while, or that motivate me to feel something for the Main charicters. I can forgive a poorly writen book if it has a storyline that interests or intrigues me, Dan Brown fills that catagory.

Well, fantasy and science fiction stories tended to keep my attention a lot better than other types. Used to read a lot of horror too, but in the end I just kept going round the library trying to find all the SF books I could find.

One of the first of the genre I recall reading is Sunburst by Gotlieb. I liked it a lot so kept looking for more. Every time I found a writer, I just read all his work till I had to look around again for other writers. It was Weis&Hickman that really got me interested in fantasy though, I still like the Deathgate series best, apart from the very disappointing ending. (which they do a lot, never did read many endings by them I like)

For me, its the fact that it is easier to lose myself int eh imaginative world of fantasy or sci-fi. And its nice to know that someone is less likely to turn the stories into a horrible movie, thus ruining the whole experiance. I get enough of the whole murder mystery/ horror just watching the news ever now and than.

Because I like them. Did I need another reason?

I also read fantasy for the escapism really, most of the worlds in alot of fantasy books feel more "pure" in a way as opposed to the real world.

I started off by reading The Wheel of Time series and then expanded the amount of books I read from there. I've re-read that series three times now because of the sheer diversity of the world.

That and adventures tend to be quite fun to read about rather than experience first hand =)

edit:
Also as an afterthought since this thread got me thinking about things, the difference between the fantasy worlds and the real world interests me. Sometimes I even find myself thinking about how some things could be implemented in the real world.
Being able to lose myself from studying physics in real life is also a bonus. I do enjoy physics, but sometimes it gets really intense you know?
