It's called fanfiction, and there's a lot of it out there, on many, many different sites. Some of it's good, a great deal of it isn't. It started with Star Trek fanzines way back when, and now just about every show, movie or book with any sort of fan following has some fanfic. Even some (quite disturbing, imo) about the actors, rather than the characters they play.

That wasn't even close to being "everything about fanfiction" but considering you presented fanfic to us here like it's some heretofore undiscovered revelation that you had just found, then obviously you did need a bit of a clue.

As for the "excellent" fanfic you specifically linked, I noticed it's rated R. Moreover, the description reads: In Harry's fifth year he gets a snake with the Sight. Hermione's torn between Ron and Harry, who's torn between her and Ginny, who's torn between him and Draco Malfoy, who's torn between her and loyalty to his father.

Most R or NC-17 fanfic is merely an excuse to write erotica with someone else's characters (that, too, has been going on since someone first put pen to paper and had Kirk and Spock get it on with each other.) And this particular one looks like it's someone's attempt to **** with every possible character pairing. So for anyone interested in checking it out, I recommend they take it with a large grain of salt.

I read one that involved Harry, Hermione, Ron's sister... a book... some evil magic... some tentacles...

I actually went onto that site last week just to look around. I can honestly say that I will never go back to it again. The first two stories I clicked on were nothing more than some pulpy erotic stories about Harry and Ginny. It was a bit much. I'm sure some of them are good but when you read the line "Ginny was sure it wasn't a wand in Harry's pocket" it's time to leave.

The ones I read had nothing sexual in em at all...
