Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (major spoilers!!)Follow

So, let's try this again then.

Naturally, for those who have not as yet read the book, stop reading this thread right now!

Seriously, it's your own responsibility!

Still sure?

Ok then.

Anyway, I must say that I quite enjoyed the book, a very decent ending to the series.

The start of the book really paced things up, so I was a bit disappointed with the middle of it. I found it quite boring even, at times I knew what Ron went through. But the ending more than made up for it!

Some of the deaths didn't made all that much sense, sort of a needless padding of the death count. Most of them were done in a "by-the-way" style, for instance Moody or Lupin and Tonks. Contrary to Dobby and Fred, where Harry instantly experienced it.

As for Snape, well, she did that part brilliantly imo. He poured his life into that vial and gave Harry a full history of why he did what he did. Still not a likeable guy though, I mean his reasons for turning on Voldemort weren't exactly heroic.

But I suppose that this is what Rowlings has done several times. At times even overdoing it, with Dumbledore imo for instance. It worked great with Snape and Sirius, both of them were more than what they seemed at first, and it works well, but with Dumbledore she overdid the whole "tearing down the hero" bit.

All in all, great series!

I was completely okay with the book until I started reading some spoiler discussions...
For instance, JKR said that the significance of Harry having his mother's eyes would be revealed and it never even clicked for me that Snape's dying words to Harry were "Look at me," simply because Snape wanted Lily's eyes to be the last thing he saw before he died. It gave me a bit of an ick-factor when I realized that.

I've always been a big pro-Snape fan, but was entirely surprised that he was the one accusing Dumbledore of using Harry like some kind of animal.

LOVED: Neville going hard core attack..... Mrs. Weasely tweaking out in the final battle, Snape hiding the sword and leading Harry to it

Cried like a baby.... Hedwig dying (I know its just an owl... but come on, that hurt), Ron's return and Hermione's fit, Dobby's funeral, Weasely family confronting Percy and then Fred's deathbed...

I hated... hated... hated the epilogue thing. Albus Severus Potter... bleh (although, the little bit between just Al and Harry was cute).

Just finished it about 3 minutes ago, now I can look at the interwebs again without fear! Loved it, going to be a great movie. Really wasn't so happy about Tonks and Lupin and Fred, but guess it could have been worse. That last chapter was confusing, trying to keep everyone straight!

True, Neville really came out on top of things in the end. Making his grandmother proud and standing up to Voldemort and his army. Good he didn't die! Just saw the movie and they are really keeping him in it, a good sign for movie 7 I suppose. (which should be very good, if they limit the middle of the book)

Hedwig dying, that was odd and way too fast even if she was "just" an owl. I really didn't expect it and half expected Hedwig to return halfway the book.

Mrs. Weasely really took measure of Beatrix, got to love her for that!

It's a basic theme of Rowlings, others have stated this in another thread, that ultimately everyone is responsible for their own destiny. Meaning, Sirius for instance got himself killed in part due to how he treated his house elf. Harry on the other hand treated him well, and was rewarded with loyalty. Same with his behaviour towards Dobby.

Snape acted like a jerk his entire life, his love for Lilly is basically the only reason he didn't completely fall into the clutches of Voldemort. Not enough in the end though.

Dumbledore died because of his mistakes in his youth, out of arrogance and foolishness.

Voldemort died because he just couldn't get over being a halfbreed and never trusting or loving anyone in his life. Never understood the concept so he died of it.

In short, if you don't start to love and treat others well, you die pretty badly in Rowling's world!

Anyway, I'm going to reread the entire series again, book 1 to 7. As I said I would when it all began.

Should be fun!

I've been thinking about that after reading your post, I think Snape actually wanted to see Harry's eyes when he died to try and focus the thoughts he wanted Harry to see. Those naturally included a lot of Lilly, so it would help for him to see his eyes that are equal to Lilly's.

Not easy to get the thoughts you want into a vial on a good day, nevermind when you die!

Just a thought really, and also the more I think of it, the more I do consider that part of the book to be the best bit. Finally the true motivation behind Snape.

Is now my favorite book in the series. It was really well done, as alot of ppl have said I would have liked the epilogue to have some more detail, it seemed very rushed :(

Favorite Parts:
I LOVED how Kreacher did a complete turn around, that was just awesome.

The chapters "The Sacking Of Severus Snape" and "The Battle Of Hogwarts" were just amazing, I was bouncing in place I was so excited lol.

Made Me Cry:
Dobby's burial, and when Harry finds out what he must do, and is leaving to die, I couldn't stop crying.

Overall I'm sad it's over, but feel everything was summed up nicely :)

Agreed. The Battle for Hogwart's was fantastic as was the Prince's Tale. The epilogue could have been so much more though.

I know a lot of people seem to hate the epilogue. I thought it was quite fitting. It went back around in a full circle, more or less, with the young versions going off to Hogwarts for their first year. I've read the arguement that it's too much of a happy ending. Honestly, after a childhood like theirs you would think they would deserve a happy, normal adult life.

As for the rest of the book, it was pretty good. It did seem to drag in parts while they were in hiding, but just when I'd start getting impatient some encounter would happen to liven things up again. I thought the final battle was very well done. Snape turning out to be what he was didn't suprise me at all. I'll admit that it was pretty odd reading nearly the whole thing with none of it being based at Hogwarts till the end. Not that it was a bad thing really, just weird.

I'm having a bit of a debate with someone about this: did Harry die?

I'ld say yes, if he wanted to he could have "moved on", it was his choice Dumbledore said I believe.

It's not that it wasn't fitting, perhaps most people just dislike the huge gap between the end of the fight and the epilogue. No real sort of closure regarding what happened to Fred or Lupin and Tonks, hints and references naturally, especially with Lupin and Tonks' son. In theory, this book is it, no more about Hogwarths and HP or anyone else, so I can understand why so many just don't want it to end at all, nevermind an ending with quite a bit of promises about future interesting events.

I mean, it would be interesting to read more about the whole bunch at Hogwarths I'ld say.

Didn't she just say that she would not write any more Harry Potter novels? as apposed to no more from the world itself.

Lets face it most authors do like to write the whole "Next generation" thing.

She also left a TON of new content to write about should she decide to jump back into it again.

When I started the book, and I saw that there was an Epilogue, I was willing to bet my entire vault that Harry would end up writing some sort of "Real Version" of Dumbledore's Life. It sure would have made it easier on me, I was staring at a dark ceiling at like 4 AM trying to straighten myself out on it.

Frankly, I don't think I really needed to know that Harry-Ginny and Ron-Hermy got it on, it was kind of a guilty childish pleasure in how even kissing (see: snogging) was viewed as extremely... well I don't want to say bad but it was extreme. JKR is clearly not one for a good old fashioned PDA I guess, I bet I could count all the snogging on my hands and feet.

Has anyone heard about JKR's plan to release an "Encyclopedia" type thing that would go into detail in the things that she didn't write much about? I heard my sister talking about it but she didn't know much either...

It was a good book, but too short, in my opinion. Too many important characters were killed off without notice and the epilogue didn't tie up all the loose ends.

I knew Snape wasn't all bad and the love story between him and Lily was really touching. Harry and Ginny ending up together was almost a given, but made me happy nonetheless (considering the ending of the previous book). Ron and Hermione was obvious as well, but also pretty awesome. Tonks and Lupin was the worst part, in my opinion. Just had a child and then they're written off like that. Fred dying was sad as well. I have always seen Fred and George as two bodies sharing a soul. I can't imagine how George could go on without him.

Like someone else mentioned, it's pretty nasty to think that Harry and Ginny, and Ron and Hermione, did more than just snog at some point. Perhaps because that particular chapter put some pretty illegal imagery of Bonnie Wright and Emma Watson in my mind. Shudder. Looking forward to finding out who will be playing the adult Ginny and Hermione, though...

Anyway, I hope this isn't the end of the Potter universe. The books have been part of my life since '97 and since I'm from '85, that's almost half my life.

Firstly, I thought the book was a very nice conclusion to the series.

Secondly, the fact that she killed major characters without so much as a death scene was not simply irritating - it was lazy.

I mean really.

'Oh, Lupin died'

The guy was a major character from what, book three? And he dies. Fine, he's dead. No big deal. But at least let us see the blaze of glory. In my opinion it was like the last half of the book was rushed.

I agree that some parts felt extremely rushed. The epilogue comes to mind immiediately. Lupin and Tonks dying should have been written out completely so we can read what happened for ourselves. Still a very good book and a fairly good way to end the series.

I missed this earlier, lol this fact didn't hit me till the next day when I was getting ready for work and all of the sudden that clicked and I was all Awwww, and then OMFG that's kinda yucky!! Smiley: lol I love the books that you can read thru multiple times and find something new that you missed or that didn't click until after another read.

I didn't really find that part to be creepy. I found it pretty straight forward. The guy loved no other woman except Lily. The closest thing to her was Harry and he had the same exact eyes as she did. I found it kind of fitting that all he wanted to do was see her eyes again before he died considering everything he did he did for her. But maybe it's just me.

I understand it, and it was perfect BUT it just increased his "yuckyness" for me. Just all the hatred he showed towards Harry and the only reason he cared at all that he didn't die was because he was the last connection he had to Lily, it was the stalker like obsessiveness of it all that was so creepy.

Bah, stalk is just a five letter word for love!

Seriously - I felt for Snape after reading the last three or four books. I mean to go thru all that crap for a woman that ditched you for another guy? Snape was a bigger man that I would have been.

I'd have killed James, Lilly, Harry and everyone else remotely related to them.

Having just read the series from start to finish over the last month (refused to open it until the final book was done.

my impressions... the publisher should have given her the final book back and told her to re-write at least the last 10 chapters, because they sucked.

The good.

The overall story line was excellent, well thought out and clever. The Holy trinity interacted well and had the necessary flaws that good hero's show.

The death eater finally appeared menacing, and Bellatrix's insanity was well used. The almost failure of many plans was enjoyable since it added some much needed realism to the whole affair.

Doddy's death was great, fantastic end for a secondary charicter.

Snapes memory section was also excellent, giving humanity to a charicter you hoped wasn't a bad guy, truely redeaming himself, couldn't understand why he didn't get a poirtait as he wa a headmaster.

the whole split soul idea was nice and it was great when it turned out Harry was one.

Oh and finally Percy see's the light!!!

The Bad

Her charicter development was poor to abysmal once you got past the main three charicters and there was so many lost opportunities to make charicter memorable it was painful. You know i think she was scared we (The reader) would like another charicter more than the holy trinity.

Of the major deaths Tonks, Freds and Lupins where handled incredibly badly, credit wher credit is due Dobby's was done very well but Snapes could and should have been so much more.

the Ginny relationship was totally ignored even when the given reason (VM would use it against Harry) was totally null and void, thus an opportunity to advance the Ron/Hermiony situation was utterly missed and ended up looking clumsy and false.

The death of VM's snake was poorly done and again an opportunity was missed, the "distraction could have been better handled and used to promote another charicter. I personally would have had Draco save Neville and had Lucius die to save his son, that would have shown the care for his son that Rowling tried unsucsessfully to make convincing for the latter half of the book.

The Ugly.

the 200+ wasted pages detailing Harry hermiony and Ron ******** at each other in a forest and then a finalle that lacked 50 pages.

there is so much about this book that should have been done differently, secondary charicters that should have been developed, relationships that where left half done charicters that could have been redeamed that wheren't (Draco and Narcissa in particular.)
