Has anyone read this book by Neil Gaiman? I was at Borders yesterday buying his new book and the cashier told me a movie based on his book was coming out this year.

Think I should read it before the movie? I have complete faith that I'll like ANYTHING he pens, but I wasn't sure what order I should approach it in since books tend to ruin movies more than movies ruin books.

Never heard of it, though I'm not the biggest Gaiman fan.
Fun book. It's more in the vein of Neverwhere then American Gods or Anansi Boys (all good reads btw).
It's a quick book, short book. There's a comic book adaption by Gaiman and Charles Vess if that's more your route.

I just finished American Gods yesterday. It was pretty good I guess. It was well written but I kept waiting for something "big" to happen.
I picked up Stardust today and plan on reading that before the movie comes out. In my opinion, it's always better to read the book before the movie. Doing it the other way around governs the imagination because you keep envisioning the movie instead of what you would have come up with.

I'm not too familiar with Neil Gaiman... the only things I've read of his were Good Omens (I'm a Pratchett fan) and Mirror Mask (before watching it), but I liked both.

Smoke and Mirrors was an awesome read- couple dozen short stories, all of them great. I <3'd "Murder Mystery" and "Snow, Glass, and Apples" in particular, but the whole thing is just fun :)
Stardust I read several months ago, and it was kinda fun. I had no idea that the upcoming movie is based on that novel.

I didn't like Stardust all that much, though the movie looks like fun.
Personally I don't think Gaiman is that great a novelist and should stick to comics and short stories. Coraline was good and Neverwhere wasn't bad but I didn't really like the others.

I actually picked it up. Finished it in about four hours. Extremely easy book to read. It wasn't all that terrible, for the most part fairly amusing. I think you would enjoy it Pikko.
Like Brill said, it's a really easy read. Shouldn't take you more than 2 hours to finish the book. The prose was pretty light. I just couldn't stand the whole "Tristran" name. Why couldn't it just be Tristan and not give me a headache trying to say it correctly in my mind?

I've read it twice. First I read the plain text novel version. Thought it was alright, nothing magnificent but worth a read. Then I was at the library and saw the Vertigo version with the art by Charles Vess. I saw someone refer to it as a comic book adaptation. That is not true. A comic book adaptation would be something like Gaiman and P Craig Russell's adaptation of Murder Mysteries (a Gaiman short story). The Charles Vess / Neil Gaiman version of Stardust is identical text-wise, it just has gorgeous full color illustrations on every page, sometimes massive 2-page spread illustrations. And it makes it infinitely better. I would recommend reading the illustrated version FAR above the normal edition.
Should be interesting to see how the movie turns out.
I just saw the movie and it was WAY better than I expected. I highly recommend it.

Saw the movie, liked it alot. The girl loved it. Has a pretty good mix of comedy, action, romance in it to keep the story moving quickly. Normally I don't like Claire Danes but I thought she did a really good job in the movie. It's definitely worth watching though.
If I am not mistaken the illustrated version came first, then the novel adaptation and then the movie. But I could be wrong.
