Have you read any of the following?

The Original Shannara Trilogy
   · First King of Shannara
   · The Sword of Shannara
   · The Elfstones of Shannara
   · The Wishsong of Shannara

The Heritage of Shannara
   · The Scions of Shannara
   · The Druid of Shannara
   · The Elf Queen of Shannara
   · The Talismans of Shannara

The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara
   · Ilse Witch
   · Antrax
   · Morgawr

High Druid of Shannara
   · Jarka Ruus
   · Tanequil
   · Straken

The Magic Kingdom of Landover
   · Magic Kingdom For Sale -- Sold!
   · The Black Unicorn
   · Wizard At Large
   · The Tangle Box
   · Witches' Brew

The Word & the Void Series

For some reason I had never picked any of these books up, I started on the Landover series this weekend :D Are the Shannara books really good?

I'm in the exact same boat and I would love to hear some opinions. It's just that I've been so wary since a couple modern fantasy writers I've tried to read - Jordan and Salvatore specifically - didn't satisfy my tastes at all (they down-right stunk in my opinion). I'm starting to think that only past fantasy writers are worth their beans...

I have read:

The Original Shannara Trilogy
 First King of Shannara
 The Sword of Shannara
 The Elfstones of Shannara
 The Wishsong of Shannara

The Heritage of Shannara
 The Scions of Shannara
 The Druid of Shannara
 The Elf Queen of Shannara
 The Talismans of Shannara

The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara
 Ilse Witch

High Druid of Shannara
 Jarka Ruus

The Magic Kingdom of Landover
Magic Kingdom For Sale -- Sold!
 The Black Unicorn

The first two series listed were really great, though you'll probably find quite a few parallel's to Dragonlance. It should be noted that First King was written after the other three and should probably be read after the trilogy.

My personal favorite is Elfstones, but quite a few people prefer Wishsong, my least favorite, simply because I don't like songs. So I'm guessing Magi would love Wishsong. The Heritage books were very good. My favorite of those being the Elf Queen.

I don't remember anything about Ilse Witch and I couldn't even finish Jarka Ruus cause it was so ******.

The Landover books, though I've only read two, were highly entertaining for me in high school.

Overall, Terry Brooks does pretty good work and I even have an autographed copy of Sword of Shannara.

the landover books are fun light fantasy, which is a little rare these days. i think i read the sword of shannara and wasnt impressed, but the series could have evolved a lot by then. Not sure about the others and the word and the void series.

Yeah, Sword of Shannara is probably the weakest of the three because of its length and tedious pace at times, but it's still worth it to get through. I haven't read them in a while though so I'm sure by now my tastes would indicate a different opinion.

I don't know why but I could never read Terry Brooks' Shannara series, for me it was like dredging through mire.

The Magic Kingdom of Landover
Magic Kingdom For Sale -- Sold!
 The Black Unicorn
 Wizard At Large
 The Tangle Box
 Witches' Brew

I've all of the above at one time or another it's been awhile but I do recall getting quite a chuckle out of them.

I thought they were all a bit 'fantasy light' tbh.

I just read Armageddons Children, and tho its a pretty original storyline, its just soooo.....shallow.

I like my books dense tho.

It's a good "gateway" series.

I love Terry Brooks, I have just about all the books! Especially the Magic Kingdom books.

I prefer light reading myself. If the book requires five pages to describe detail of an inn, or just as many pages to start you off on some confusing backstory that explains more about the surroundings and emotions than what is actually going on, then my eyes begin to glaze over and I fall asleep, but that's me :P.

I'd recommend the Magic Kingdom if you want to start off real light, then the Shannara are probably the next logical step. At least for Terry Brooks.

Fuck that lol! If I see a new FFXI admin I'll punch a puppy. I lost out to Imperial for the last spot and was told if they decided to hire another one that I would be in the running again. Damn you Alla. Damn you to hell!

Not really though, hire me. I'll work for less than Exodus and you can fire him. We all know Alla doesn't like beaners.

Unfortunately I've read all but the Word and the Void series.

Then again my book shelves are littered with Stackpole, Greenwood, Salvatore, Rice, Rawn, Radcliff, Weis, Hickman, Norton, Brooks, Jordan, Herbert, Anderson, and a few others.

Brill, that was for FFXI admins. :P Until Exodus cheese overdoses or Imperial Mijin Gakures you're outta luck.

Sorry the Landover series put me off, though I have read every one of the Shanarra books(on the newest). We each have our own taste's, and some just won't like Brooks style of writing. Yes the story line gets a bit drawn out at point's, but so does Tolkien and Peirs Anthony.
#23 Jul 29 2007 at 5:26 PM Rating: Decent
I consider Brooks to be a gateway fantasy author. The Sword of Shannara is really quite similar to Lord of the Rings, but in a familiar way unlike, for example, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever which is similar to Tolkien, but so unrelentingly dark and morbid and depressing that it can be draining to even read the books.

I enjoyed Brooks when I was in high school, just starting out in fantasy, but now that I've dug deeper into fantasy I just can't keep up that interest. I'd put him in a similar level as Goodkind or Jordan. Good for your first few fantasy books, but compared to Zelazny, Moorcock, Vance, Wolfe, Bakker, and so on... just not worth the time investment.

I remember reading The Sword of Shannara about 20 years ago and thinking it was brilliant. I then managed the Elfstones and Wishsong, but began to lose interest after that. After reading this post I'm tempted to revisit and see what I think of them now.

Late reply, but anyway.

Short reply too: I tried, I honestly did.

Just not enjoyable for me, so I gave up.
