Brill, you're the first person I ever heard, that said they didn't like Card at all.
Most of the people I know in Fandom, including a few authors place him among their favorite writers. I know that he is a big draw for conventions and wish he was the GOH at one I can make someday soon.
I read near all his works and only found one disapointment among them. Then I already made a thread for his last novel Empire. He was trying too hard to preach his political views and the writing suffered.
As to SF religion and writters, I was talking to Jack Chalker once, when he mention that Ron Hubbard was dared into creating his own religion.
