Ender's GameFollow

I read Ender's Game for a outside reading in a science fiction class and it's now one of my favorite books ever. Usually in a book you can kind of see where it's going, but this book has some truly shocking twists in it, that you won't see coming even now that you know they're there somewhere.

Ya, I really liked this book, also my alltime favorite book, but the rest of that series wasn't to my liking as much as Ender's Game was. I did, however, start reading card's other series Homecoming and I really like that. I'd strongly recommend it if you liked Ender's game. Card is one of the only authors that I can actually sit down and read without complaining.

I thought ender's game was phenomal. Read for the first time in junior hand have read it half a dozen time since then (i'm 29 now). Later books in the series (IMO) seemed to get progressively weaker and more required an increasly laborius effort to finish. However, Card's book "Treason" is also very good as well as all of the Alvin Maker books.

I am also a fan of the original Frank Herbert "Dune", however much like Card's ender series I believe that the quality of the books declined with each successive effort. In the later Dune books I think the decline was incredibly rapid and severe. Be that as it may, fans of Dune should check out the 2 prequel trilogies written by Kevin Andersen and Brian Herbert(Frank's son).

so i have read Enders Game, but none of the others in the series. are they worth reading? I am currently reading Ringworld by Larry Niven. I thought Enders Game was incredible. i thought that was so bad *** when he finds the giants corpse and tower and all that **** from that game on the bugger world.

Personally I feel that Speaker for the Dead is one of the best books I've ever read. I haven't read any of the shadow books yet, but I'd rate the series this way:

1. Speaker for the Dead
2. Ender's Game
3. Xenocide
4. Children of the Mind

I actually stopped at the end of Ender's Game, I thought it was a perfectly good ending, and I think I'm very much satisfied. I'm sure the sequels are good, but I have this weird thing about not wanting a plotline to continue if a book ends very well.

Yeah I have to agree that Enders Game definitely ranks WAY up there as one of the best books I've ever read. While the sequels, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide and Children of the Mind were great as well, they never quite recaptured the feel of the original. Now in recent years, Card has picked this story back up, starting with Enders Shadow, which I thought was a really excellent revisiting of the original Ender story, from the POV of the character Bean. I enjoyed the whole series that continued on from this one, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant. I've even brainstormed a really cool way to introduce Bean into the world of Children of the Mind. ^_^ Another very good series by Card is the Alvin Maker series, consisting of Seventh Son, Red Prophet, Prentice Alvin, Journeyman Alvin, Heartfire, and Crystal City(may have left one out there but I was like 10 when he first started writing these lol).

Seems some of the better SciFi writers are religious whackos.

I like Cards action. Ender's Game was really exciting. Ender's Shadow was interesting in hearing the story from a different perspective. I still got embroiled in Children of the Mind.

Speaker for the Dead was ok, but like Hive and the Hedgemon it was too unexplained or something and lacking in excitment.

I just finished Enders Game again. That book always makes me smile. I always get caught up in the games at Battle School and forget the rest of the books. I find it odd that people in this forum have a problem with authors that have a religious background. I would say that a lot great story tellers tend to have some sort of religious upbringing. What better place to learn how to tell stories then from books that have been around for years and read by millions(billions).

A majority of the posts that are in this thread are by people who recognize a good story when they see them. There are a few people that seem caught up on the author and not the story. My feeling on books is that I don't care what people do with there life or what they did in the past, I care about the story, readability and enjoyment. So if you read the above post that Orson Scott Card is "LDS" and are thinking about not reading the book because he must be a "religious whackos" please reconsider you will enjoy the book.

This book took me totally off guard, I try not to do this but I was reading and thinking "He doesn't have enough time to go do what needs to be done, if there's only this much left of the book..." Lol, I guess it takes a lot of people by surprise though, very good read yet I haven't checked out the others in the series yet.

I suppose that should be my next project after rereading Huma and maybe Kaz too.

Enders game is no Starship Troopers.

I recently reread both and while I do enjoy enders game I would never say it is a 'great book'.

I hated this book. I have hated every book I have ever read by Card. I just don't see why so many people make such a big fuss about his books at all.
