Sorry, I am too lazy to scan this forum to see if anyone else has posted about this...

I was honestly blown away by the fact that this was written by a 15 year old. You could easily notice the Tolkien influenct, but it was still a neat book.

A 15 year old wrote it? I didn't know that... I've had a few people tell me its a really good book and that I should read it. Perhaps now I will (as soon as I finish reading 'Once and Future King', 'the Stand', and a few Anne Rice books I need to catch up on...).

Well, it's a good book.

But I wouldn't call it heavily influenced by Tolkien as much as severely influenced by Eddings' Belgariad.

Not all of it though, but especially the way the magic works, and the dangers of it are seemingly just taken from Eddings.

The character of the story teller is just so akingly close to Belgarath (story teller is his cover too, and aren't the boy and the story teller connected in Eragon too?)

There seems to be a hint of Elizabeth Haydon's Destiny trilogy in it too.

But a lot of it might just be the problem of me reading too much fantasy in too short a period lol, that can cloud things a bit much.

Still quite fun to read and I'm eagerly awaiting part two!

I thougth Eragon was mindless, derivative, contrived, and offered absolutely nothing we haven't seen from both good and awful writers, and nothing more than a product of marketing. Personally I don't care if an author is 1052 or 2 years old, it doesn't change my view on the quality of his/her book. That said, everyone has different opinions.

One of the worst books I have ever read however fans can expect Eldest to be out in August.

I thoroughly enjoyed both Eragon and Eldest(which i just finished yesterday).

Sure, it's not going to be added to the AP Cannon, but it's an entertaining read nonetheless.

As is the case with any classic high fantasy, it's not really anything new or groundbraking. But i LIKE stories about dragons and magic and elves and whatnot. I don't care if there are "better" fantasy novels out there.

One of the best books i've read in the past few years.

and for you literary snobs, by "best" i mean most enjoyable and entertaining, not some ******** analytical garbage about how it's unoriginal or derived or whatever. I don't care about literary analysis becuase it doesn't matter. I enjoyed the story. If there were literary flaws or imperfections, i didn't notice because paying attention to such things takes the joy away from reading a new story.

I also just finished Magician:apprentice and Magician:Master (combined recently into one book - Magician) by Raymond Feist. probably something AinulindaleFBS would have a little more respect for, though personally no more or less enjoyable a read.
Now i'm continuing on with the rest of Feist's saga.

I must admit, I did look forward to part two. But I'm most likely not going to finish it any time soon, I enjoyed part one but the sequel is too boring to finish.

As always, this is a personal opinion, but there is much better to be found.

Whoa, it was written by a 15 year old? That's awesome.

In theaters December 15th.

Personally, I like to see the movie then read the book. That way I'm not disappointed that my favorite part got dropped or things rearranged slightly from the book. Just my two cents.

No one has posted on this for awhile, was wondering if anyone has any information about the movie and when/if it is being released? I heard there was a 3rd book coming, but haven't seen anything more.

Yes I heard about thew third book too. The movie is released in december. I really enjoyed the books (Im fifteen lol) but I just read the Belgariad by Eddings and as someone pointed out it is quite heavy influenced. The writing isnt as good either in my opinion, but I loved the story.

You're saying you didn't like the Belgariad or Eragon as much? I've read everything by David Eddings and loved every one of his books. He was my favorite author for a long long time. But now I have so many more authors that I like. I wonder when the 3rd Eragon book is coming out..been waiting it seems like forever!

Just saw they're coming out with an Eragon video game for ps2, releasing in early November (before movie release in December). Normally, movie games suck, I wonder if this will suck too or be any good.

There is a trailer for the movie out, IIRC. I havent seen it yet, but I heard it was very D&D:The move-esque. Smiley: frown

HAHAHA sorry man I couldn't resist. I also was forced to view that trainwreck of a film. When is the third book due out anyways? A friend of mine made me read Eldest which I enjoyed. Although Eragon is a ***** when it comes to Arya.

I think Irons does a good fantasy setting character. In D&D, it was the poor script that brought the movie down in flames, not a lack of quality acting. I think, provided that the story itself holds together on film, we shouldn't fear anything on the acting scene.

Never read the books but the trailer for the movie looks awsome. Maybe because a lot of people are saying its lotr-ish and I'm a huge fan of lotr but I can not wait to go see this. Then I will probably stop at a book store somewhere and pick up the books. I know...I know..I should read the books first but honestly I read the lotr books after the movies and still thought the books were better. So I'm sure the movie won't spoil me :P

I've read them, and found the writing good but poor or forced in areas. Yes, it is written by someone younger but it helps when the parents pubish it, hehe.

I'm sure theres millions of excellent stories that any of you could successfully write with the right help editting, the boost of a publisher already in place (hangup for a lot of writers), and good marketing. It's a good story, and I'm looking forward to more fantasy by this writer in the future.

Common Sense Media, a family-friendly review site, was particularly scathing, stating that, "It's not long, however, before they begin to notice the long-winded descriptions, the clichés and hackneyed dialogue, and the derivative nature of the plot—straight out of Star Wars by way of The Lord of the Rings, with bits of other great fantasies thrown in here and there. That this is a great achievement for one so young is undeniable, and many children will love it. It certainly ranks right up there with other derivative, overblown fantasies written by adults, such as Terry Brooks's Sword of Shannara series.
