This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
-From Henry V by William Shakespeare
I hardly know where to start after reading all of this, so I suppose I shall start from the beginning and work my way down. I'm not replying here to try to justify myself, nor am I trying to argue. I'll simply tell it like it is because that is my responsibility as leader.
I'll begin by addressing the gentleman who started this thread, and I'll do so while holding my tongue. Yes, we do claim to be pretty darn good. Yes, we are very proud of ourselves and are work. Heck, why shouldn't we hold onto the pride that we can? We've earned it. No other activity in Final Fantasy 11 requires so much dedication and time, and painfully enough; no other activity in the entire game pays back so little.
I'll explain a little of what an EF entails. First, you warp to a region. Once you have you spend a few minutes trying to find a banner, no problem. You go to the banner, fight some NM's and the battle is over for a little bit. Then, you go and find the next and repeat. Now, this doesn't seem so rough... until you look at one huge factor.
Time.
One banner has about... a milafraction of a fraction of an effect on the overall control of a region. And I'm being generous. Honestly, we have spent 4-5 hours a night a good 4-5 nights a week in one region only to lose it ten minutes before tally. Not because the other nations beat us out of it with their EF (Because honestly they don't EF... ever) but because the biggest affect on a region's control is the signet. Let's face it; Sandoria has Bastok beaten badly in numbers, why do you think Sandoria always has first place? They didn't DO anything to earn it, they just went out and leveled up like anyone else and boom; they get first place.
That's simply the sad truth; I'm not complaining or asking it to be fixed... I'm simply explaining.
We have been called lazy it seems. Sure, that's like calling a cancer victim lazy. You're screwed from the start, but you fight on and on and even though the chances of victory are slim. A week of work, and not playing the game only to result in nothing... but we do it over and over again because we are everything but lazy; we are dedicated.
Now, I suppose I have made it sound like we never win anything, which is entirely inaccurate. There are times where the above situation occurs, but there are also times when our hard work pays off and we are able to snag a few regions for Bastok. We get a few regions... it's not first, but damn it sure feels good to see that hard work pay off an a few more shops stocked up in Bastok.
You say we are lazy, but seriously... we work harder then any other nation and we are proud of what we get. Bastok is the under dog, we have it rough... but I like it that way. We have come a long way from a small-unorganized linkshell, through some bad leaders, and to what we are today. We have nearly perfected many strategies for EF combat and I can faithfully say if a region had no effect from a signet and a Bastok EF was to compete with one from Windurst or Sandoria we would win.
Overall I'm very proud of the progress this linkshell has made from the days Nassete created the first shell before quitting the game for RL issues. Sometimes I am a bit of a slave driver when people are burned out from so much work for so little gain, but damnit I love you guys.
Moving on;
Despite whatever rumors spread around I did not quit because of my linkshell. I've given half truths and part reasons why I left but I never really gave a full explanation. I was rather humbled by the incredible amount of /t I got from folks wishing me luck or asking me not to leave from around the server.
I was going through some rough times in life, and dealing with some issues of a very personal level. Basically, I wasn't up to dealing with them and putting the time playing ff11 and leading EFs demanded. So I quit ff11 for a bit, then a very close friend of mine was going to play WoW so I went along for the trip.
I actually ran into the man who lead Windy's old EF LS in WoW which was rather interesting. (Argeron in the Silverhand Server). I ended up leaving his guild for my own because I can't follow so well, I'm a leader. After a month or so I had gotten max level and had lead a fair amount of raids and battles 'n such but in all honestly... I missed BSF. I missed the old crew, I missed my friends and damnit I missed how bad we kicked ass. No one in any MMO could replace that.
So here you see me, returned to ff11 a new man. By new I mean poor because I was dumb and gave my gil away.
I think that about covers the accusations thrown at us in the first post. I'll be more brief from now on.
Shadowneko; you're right and wrong. I appreciate the comment, entirely.
There have been a few other Bastok EF LS made in our wake, but honestly... they don't do anything (no offense). It isn't entirely their fault, they don't have experience or the numbers like we do. instead of making another EF ls why not pitch in and help and push through the hell like the rest of us. More numbers means when people get burned out, there are more to replace them. A united effort is better then a divided one as far as I see it.
SirAndrew you remind me I forgot to address something.
If any member of BSF ever puts you down or rips into you for no reason you go ahead and /t me right away. I WILL deal with it immediately. In my LS I DEMAND a level of honor and respect in the players in my ls; socially, morally, and if I could I'd like to impress my chivalristic(not a word, I know) nature onto them (but I won't push my luck). Sure, I can't police what everyone does always... so as I said give me a /t if you have a problem.
My goal in BSF is not only to provide a means to organize EFs but also to provide a close knit family setting. We are more or less a brotherhood. We have many family groups and RL friend groups in our LS, which really adds to that. And though we are close knit, we are always welcoming more players.
As far as making fun of new players... unacceptable. The core members would NEVER do that blatantly and stupidly. In fact, we regularly find players with problems and when we do we inform those we see as being the best of the best in Bastok for that specific job so they can offer a bit of mentoring. And no, we don't do this just to Bastokan players.
Sure, we'll complain about new players (who hasn't?). And of course people will laugh when someone does something that is rather...well...odd, but not without explaining afterward. We actually endorse some interesting ideas. For example: Dale. level 50 something paladin/white mage. He's a cool guy, talk to him sometime. Also galka white mage? I love galka white mages.
Seeing Puma's post I'm reminded to say: We EF a lot more then Qufim and Dunes. We just have bad weeks sometimes, who doesn't?
Kei, thanks for sticking up for me. I have respect for you. Everything Steviejay said stands by itself perfectly correct.
As far as people expressing interest in joining us, contact me in game. My character is Lucas, I'd get back to you from this forum but I'm awful with names 'n such.
Onyxmar, thanks for doing your job. You reminded me of one other thing. We don't endorse random flaming or what not. Sure when we go EF we like to be a bit rowdy, why not? We need to have fun somehow. But when people start flame wars with us or whatever we ignore it, and new members who don't are quickly corrected. We've had a few instances, but we mop them up.
Few last notes as I am glancing around here...
Yes, LightDragon I'm glad to hear what you had to say. Constantly our goal by being a bit rough on each other is to get the best performance out of our members so they do well in party. Hopefully they are a real contribution to a party and the discipline they learn in an EF will help keep a party moving and enjoyable. While we manage to keep things rolling in an EF there is no end to the random conversations you see in the party chat. It's crazy, but I really enjoy it.
BSF does try to help other people. If you need a hand give one of us a /t and see if we are planning to lead a group to do such a thing, or if any of us can spare the time. Generaly if one of our members need to do something and we are helping them, we'll toss up shouts in Jeuno to see if anyone wants to come along for the ride and get the help they need as well.
We are generally a very giving linkshell and I'm proud of that. We don’t' endorse any kind of MPK, gil or item scandals, or anything underhanded of that variety. We make a regular effort to have shell wide blacklists or bans of aid to certain players who make severe disruptions to our server's social and economic status. You all know who such people are.
If I missed anything or didn't clear something up... or totally confused you with something; feel free to contact me in game. I'm happy to lend a hand or explain things if I can.
Take care folks,
-Jer
edit: I'd like to add I'm honored by those who would stick up for me. Kei, Onyx, Vigil.
