With the server merge finally upon us and our new Garudan neighbors (hopefully) settling down, I think it's time to discuss what is, of course, the single most important point in this fine game: Role playing.
...
Good! I'm glad everyone's with me on that one.

But seriously, the role playing community in FFXI has always been a bit sparse, and the merge provides a good opportunity for whatever population of RPers Garuda may have to find some new blood to pursue the activity with. Canta Per Me is at current, to my knowledge, Lakshmi's first and only role playing linkshell. There may be another kicking around, but we haven't really had contact with them in over a year so what happened to them is anyone's guess... Anyhow, if you are from Garuda and a roleplayer (or not even necessarily from Garuda), we'd love to get into contact with you. The link above goes to our forums, or you can send a /tell in-game to:

Xenedra/Blucian
Verence
Muirnin/Lyre
Sphinx/Bishop
Rakuyu
Darkvalkyr
Kiyoumi

Oh, also:

I have been a RPer forever, I have been in few RP LSs, preferring to enlighten the lives of normal gamers with my annoying Mithran accent.

I know a few others, and the RPing community would be greatly enhanced if we could get Ralrra* to return to FFXI.

*Do you know how hard it is not to type that name as Ralrrra?

Everybody from Garuda wants me to come back, apparently.

Also, my name requires more R's.

Technically, isn't everybody who plays this game a role player?

Not really, no. Most people who play MMOs "play as themselves." If you ask them their occupation, they'll probably tell you what they do IRL. Ask them their background and they'll likely either refuse to share RL info with creepy online people or tell you RL stuff. Their motivations are wholly "out of character" for their avatar.

Roleplaying is stepping into the role of someone in the setting, as if it were real to them. Granted, there's a wide spectrum - if you decide to talk like a Tarutaru and leave it at that, that's... pseudo-roleplaying. I guess I'd call it roleplaying, but it's generally not what people think of when they use the term. Then there are the hardcore folks who are "in character" 24/7 and will give you funny looks and confused comments if you try to talk about anything not in-game with them. Most RPers fall somewhere in between.

Basically, roleplaying walks the line between acting and storytelling, building on the information about the world and people in it provided by the game. Roleplayers generally don't roleplay with non-roleplayers because... It'd be pretty pointless, and silly besides. They tend to seek out like-minded people to do it with, so they can build a coherent story. It's not for everyone, but for those who enjoy it, it can be just as fun as grinding out 20k/hr in a kickass merit PT.

20k would be more kickass than pretty much any other merit group I've ever had...

Really is a shame how spoiled the playerbase has gotten.

I just realized I possibly misread you. So I'm going to cross that out for now.

In all honesty, I find meripo fun as long as I'm not trying to heal a bunch of Curesinking melees. As such, I usually like being the BRD.

I sure as heck wouldn't mind one that was actually capable of pulling out 20k/hr.

I have experience in RPing but I don't on this game because let's face it...it'd take a hell of a lot of work to explain a good backstory for my character, plus, between grinding and being utterly bored on SMN at the moment, I just don't have the energy.

Trust me, Shadygrove is one of those people. I don't think I've ever seen her out of character.

After fighting with SE for two months in the fall to get my account back after it was hacked, I figured I might at least get some use out of it XD

Though I'm not really all that 'back,' I log on twice a week for Limbus and once for Dynamis, but WoW has spoiled me with its PvP and questing ><

You don't have to worry about a backstory if you speak a different language. And by that I mean one you made up. I remember an old friend, "Sezzy," practically screaming in ls chat over a person in his xp party that would only speak in elvaan. Being the kind, helpful friend I was, I was pretty much in tears laughing at poor Sez. He was highstrung to begin with (damn I miss him!).

In six years, I have only ever come across a RDM "buying rounds" in the pub. Of course I let him. A free drink at the bar from a man is a free drink at the bar from a man, or something like that...

Well then... until such time as I see fit to come back (i.e. the wife relinquishes her death grip on the checkbook), the Persecuted Galka Dance Troupe is at your disposal. ;)

EDIT: 2k post ding GO! :)

Seeing as this is a Role Playing game, yes.

In exactly the same way that we Americans, living in a Liberal Democracy, are all liberal.

Yay for the first post on here in... such a long time I forget how long it was! I suppose I could find out these things, but I'm much too important to spend my time on such frivolous things.

Much love to Canta Per Me, the finest RP Linkshell I've ever been proud to call myself a part of!

I personally attest, all you Garuda RPers and potentials, that CPM is the pinnacle of character-driven Roleplaying in FFXI. Just watch out for Wynstead. Roar.

It's good to see so many familiar faces from Garuda still around. Tonight I just reactivated my account after ages away. I was curious what ever happened to FFXI's world.
