I retired from FFXI this weekendFollow

#1 Sep 15 2009 at 12:24 PM Rating: Decent
So after a trip back home for my son's first birthday, I started thinking to myself on the trip back home. Perhpas its time I call it quits in FFXI. I spend a lot of my freetime in the game and maybe I could be more productive outside of it. So I decided I was retiring from FFXI (once again).

The trip was ok, a little boring - too much in-laws, etc. I got home thinking about what I'd do with this new found time. There was a large collection of games I never got around to during the time I played FFXI. I figured I could play them and spend more time doing other things.

The last couple days, I've spent trying to decide what to do. I'd start playing a game, put it down thinking "nah I don't really feel like getting into this" and go do something else. I'd watch TV and remember how boring TV can be. I went and tried to get my wife to go out and do something, but she suggests we've gone out enough on our trip and shouldn't get in the habbit of spending too much money. I thought about buying a new game, but that would have to be justified to the wife, who would likely give me grief, especially when I have a stack of games still in wrappers (Dirge of Cerbeus, etc) that I never really felt like playing.

Then I started to remember why I play FFXI - its the one thing that keeps my restless self from driving myself and my wife crazy. She works 80+ hour workweeks and then still has work to do at home, so having to entertain me outside of our weekly "date night", tends to be a bit stressful.

So, this is my "I'm qutting FFXI post" with the added twist being that before anyone says "You'll be back", I can say "I already am".

Don't play games. Go play with your son instead. First 5 years is very important.

Take care.

Yeah, thanks for your "advice", but I'll continue doing both. My son goes to sleep by 7:00 every night. Most nights I'm taking care of him by myself until my wife gets home from work and play my game after he goes to bed. Thanks for being concerned on how I raise my son, though.

In before "Can I have your stuff?" posts.

Can't say I really knew you Vawn, but I wish you luck with whatever it is you decide to do. Smiley: smile

Hey, no need to get defensive over it. It was genuine concern because you don't have any pictures of your son save one in your images section. :P And everyone I know with kids talk more about their kids or wife than anything else. Plus the thread about your wife cheating on you when she didn't.

Just because I get in arguments with you doesn't mean I'm not concerned about you.

Where's the cleverly hidden "Happy Wednesday" message in the OP?

Stop with this sh*t seriously. One picture of my son on a website about video games, tells you I must be neglecting my child? You don't want me to get defensive about that? I'm going to get very defensive about messed up comments like that.

I don't talk about how I raise my son often on these boards because honestly this is not the place for it. There are tons of different views and people on these boards and this is the last place I want to get advice, or hearing people like you judgementaly jumping to conclusions about something that important. If you want to make fun of my posting style, my gear, how I play, etc go ahead - but, do not bring this bullsh*t "I'm concerned about your son" again.

And what are you trying to imply with bringing up an old Happy Friday thread? It was a joke. It was a long *** time ago. It went over well. And it was in the spirit of =10 Happy Friday threads before they started to go to crap. I put the "Happy Friday" hidden in the OP. Are you implying that I was doing this to gain sympathy or be mean to my real wife? It was a completly over-the-top joke, and I didn't let it run that long before I told people to double-check the happy friday message.

Simmadownnow Vawn. You're extremely overreacting, and reading way more into people's posts than was even suggested by them.

I'm confused about the OP. You did quit or didn't?

I don't think I'm reading too much. "Those with kids spend all their time talking about them, you don't do that, so I'm concerned. Stop playing games and take care of your son". There aren't that many dots to connect to see what they're saying.

Anyway, my point of this post was that I had honestly decided to quit FFXI. I didn't have a real reason, except to try some other things in my free time. When I found some freetime I went stir crazy fast. I have a type of personality I always need to be working on something, even during my relaxation time. This game caters to that, and why I decided not to leave.

At any rate, see you guys in game. Take care.

I think it's good to keep yourself in check and be aware of why you really play the game. I took a two-month break a little over a year ago because I thought I could be more productive with my free time. It turned out that all the things I wanted to do instead either fell through or still left me with free time kinda like what Vawn was saying. I came back to the game because I enjoy it and it's a good distraction when I'm otherwise bored (I'm a terribly restless person as well).

On a side note, I have to agree that criticizing someone's parenting over the intrawebs or anywhere else = not cool. It's possible to have a really built-up character and still not neglect your real life. I usually am working full-time, in night school, and taking care of several pets at home. My pets are well cared for and my homework always gets done, and I still have time to keep on top of everything in-game.

I apologize for criticizing Vawn's parenting skills. You guys are right, and I overstepped my boundaries. Vawn, I hope you accept this apology.

I will say this, your jokes in the past tend to fall flat, so when you talked about quitting, I came to the conclusion that I did.

Suspy is hereby condemned to bake pies for a week and no delicious cookies.

Its about time I laid the law around here!

I go missing a few weeks and an admin locks a thread!

Parliament is back in session.
