Actually, no. That's a lie. I just figured I'd score a few cheap hits with a title like that. This is actually just another goodbye thread. About two weeks ago I came down with an extremely severe case of appendicitis which might have killed me if not for emergency surgery. I was laid up in the hospital for a full week afterward, and while there I took a mental inventory of my life.

The results were not what I might have hoped for.

Long story short, there's more to life than living in my cave here, playing a silly video game all day. I want to get out of my room, to go experience real life, meet people and see what I've been missing for all these years. It's time to move on, and not to come back again.

So to all of my friends on Lakshmi, I thank you for the memories from the bottom of my heart. It's been fun. Unfortunately it just hasn't been real. To those of you who still enjoy the game, I hope you continue to, and that it doesn't interfere with your personal lives, education, friends and family, etc. (You know, like Square-Enix says, only I actually mean it.) I've sent contact information to several of you; I hope you make good use of it and stay in touch.

My character still exists. I've given Angina to an old friend who used to play a character named Ethion. So if you see "me" around, it's not me any more. But Eth's a great guy, so take the time to get to know him if you didn't already. And on that note, it's time for me to log out of Alla, too.

{Take care.}

I've always found it a little confusing how people seem to find RL and MMOs mutually exclusive. You can do both. Heck, I knew a middle-aged married couple that made attending HNMLS events twice a week part of their weekly schedule. That being said, yeah, if you have to make a sacrifice on one front or the other, gaming is always the healthier thing to forgo.

I can understand your desire to quit, and that maybe you felt you spent too much time in the game, but I do wonder about the idea of playing a 'silly video game' and experience real life, and meeting people...

This is an MMO. I constantly meet new people. We share a common interest in fact, which makes it really easy to strike up a conversation. I don't spend a huge amount of time in game, and I wait till my family is asleep before I play so I'm not taking anything from them. But this silly game that keeps so many from experiencing real life, is more of a connection to real life than many imagine. You may not be face to face with these people, but you're having real interactions, with real people, and if you're anything like the other 1,999,999 that play the game (according to SE now), I'm sure you discuss much more than just game things while playing.

I do hope the best for you finding things to do other than play, but I also hope when you look back on the time you spent in game, and the people in it, that you don't consider it a waste that caused you to miss out on anything.

It is possible that he will come back though for his sanity I hope he says away. I love FF but it does tend to ruin lives at a certain point. You have a good live Angina I just logged in and got your message on FF so I thought I would come here and check to see if you posted on here.

Angina is a good friend of mine.

Apparently the appendicitis was much more severe than he cared to elaborate in the OP, but it was severe enough that he was in danger of losing his life. He told me that he realized that video games in general (not just XI) had become his life and that he was unhappy with that, due to the great physical condition that he lost over the years.

I agree that it's definitely possible to have a moderation of both FFXI and RL, but for some people I guess it just works better to cut one entirely out of your life until you're at a better place.

I wish you the best Ang.
