You can fight the avatars as many times as you like, givin the time limitations. Each win will give you a whisper you can either keep or trade for gil or an item.

I have gotten Fenrir's Earring, Garuda's Dagger and all avatars for my lv 1 SMN.

And to be more specific, No, you do not need to get the avatars before you get another item. You get a choice of certain things each time. Also, keep in mind, that with the items, Garuda's Dagger for example, you can only obtain once. If you dump it, you're SOL.
