Red Mage / SummonerFollow

#1 Nov 07 2004 at 12:41 AM Rating: Decent
Hey, Im new to this site, and currently Im a lvl 38 RDM / 17 BLM, I have a question regarding about me switching my sub job to Summoner. I guess I should say that I enjoy very much meleeing as a RDM, so please dont rant and rave about how RDM's arent the best meleers' or whatever, cause with the right "en" spell, I hit well along with the other jobs. Anyways, I was told that if I have BLM as a sub, I can melee, yet if I use SMN as a sub, I would be the main healer. This angers me because like some SMN's they dont want to heal all the time, they want to fight with their avatars and thats what i would like to do.

I wanna be able to fight along side the avatars and melee, and enfeeb, refresh, do what ever needed, but I dont wanna be used as a main healer, unless absolutly necessary or in emergency situations.

As I stated I am currently a RDM/BLM and do love it, I do everything, but I dread the day if it ever comes, that I as a RDM will become a main healer.

I love to melee, and dont wanna lose that, please give me some hindsight on this subject, thanks lots =)

Well for 1 you wont get auto refresh till you hit RDM 50 (which will be nice)

As for not being able to melee, I wouldnt think so, but summoners tend to heal (SMN/WHM) They lack healing spells but the mains or subs usually come with it. But if you can melee and cast as a RDM/BLM then I dont see wy you wouldnt be able to melee cast while RDM/SMN

One thread Id like to point you too

And another thread here

Most of these posts consider it a viable option and not only for healing (they dont eve suggest it) So grab that Carby, and dont forget to dispell (get your avatars and no gimped sub)

I think when you hit 41 you can main heal, cause of refresh, and the massive amount of extra mp SMN gives you lets you do that. I think your BLM sub is great until then, and even if you wanna continue, that's kewl too, you can nuke better than heal, but you'll probably get a pt easier if you can main heal.

Unfortunately, a RDM as a main healer becomes very plausible and occurs quite frequently as you progress further on in levels. Lack of WHMs, or simply the more MP effective combo of RDM/BRD/BLM as the non-melees... It happens. A lot. There's just not much that a RDM can't do that a WHM can, besides the obvious RaiseII and up, and RegenII. So, I'm afraid there will be times ahead when you will have to play the role of the main healer, especially with Convert at Lv40 and Refresh at Lv41. It's either that, or an MP battery... ^^;

Switching your sub to SMN seems to be defeating the purpose if you want to melee in exp PTs. Being a SMN means having a larger MP pool, and past Lv50, you get Auto-Refresh with a SMN sub. What's more is that you lose even more DEX with a SMN sub as compared to a BLM sub. You will also be sacrificing quite a bit of INT (but will have more MND, I believe), and also relinquishing elemental debuffs and PT spells like Escape. Because of all this, you will be even more likely to be chosen as the main healer.

Not to say that this combination isn't possible, it can be done, it even has its benefits like Aerial Armor, etc. But keep in mind, people are rarely tolerant of unconventional subs for the sake of experience PTs, despite the obscure advantages. So... yeah.

That's what I feel, in any case. I'm sure this topic would be handled alot better in the RDM forums, they're the experts. But anyway, good luck, and hope this helped.
