It's been steadily losing members for a while. It's not a huge out flux but a dozen here, a dozen there adds up over time. There's also more MMOs to choose from and more on the horizon. With FFXI being forever stuck in "PS2 limitations" and graphics that are ridiculously outdated, not to mention a horrible UI coupled with expansions that cater only to high level players, there's not a lot there to attract new members. Hardcore players will still be around for a while just because they've got so much time vested in the game, but sooner or later they'll leave, either because their friends moved to a new MMO, or they tire of a game that seems to have "Too little, too late" as its mantra.
