That's the scientific solution... But scientists are nerds...

I suggest taking all the money you can find, wadding it up, and then pretend you're Roger Clemens. THAT solution is guaranteed by the engineering world.

Yep. A downgrade from a flatscreen monitor should put you somewhere in the range of "baby Jesus" in the RAM department. (That's what I chose to drop on my computer for disk space.)

Your average flatpanel is still pretty crappy compared to your average CRT. Its only the higher end flatpanels that look really sweet, with their crazy response time and viewing angles and such.

Just my opinion.

And yeah, get more RAM Laktor. 1 gig at the least. I dont track videocards anymore, so I dont know the performance of the one you listed. FFXI is driven in a large part by the processor anyways, given that my laptop with its piddly little Geforce FX Go5200 w/32mb of memory can run it.

666 replies now, yeesh. I want to break alla with this thread someday.

I whole heartedly agree that flat panels pre2005 looked like **** incarnate. Ok, not what your sitting on but pretty **** bad when playing a game. **** con carne? What, it rhymes. So with that mental image stuck in your head, i'll say that some of the new LCD's can keep up with games just nicely. My roomate has an 8MS response time monitor that can jack up past 1280 to resolutions I've forgotten, and the difference while playing games on it is palpable, as if a game has flavor its no longer masked by screen lag.

Myself? I can train my brain to ignore the pain for a monitor that doesn't wiegh 1/2 my weight like my old 21" CRT. I miss her then I remember last time I moved and she nearly killed me when I picked her up and fell backwards. I love you chronic back pain, will you be my friend?

Edit: Oh god dammit Pogle snipped 666 from me.

Funny thing is it doesn't take a 'high end' LCD to get those impressive response times and super high contrast ratios (which the contrast usually beats the pants off a CRT, and gives a much more vibrant look to games imo...movies your mileage may vary, since some movies weren't supposed to be vibrant, but games need as high a contrast ratio as you can get to really make them pop); there are some **** impressive LCDs out there for less than $350 that can get the job done quite well.

To the naked eye, the difference will be minimal, and as Apelila said, I'll gladly take the slightly reduced dot pitch (the only major thing that makes a **** bit of difference, assuming you're using a unit that can pull its weight) for a monitor that takes up a quarter the space and weighs a tenth of a CRT.

The monitor argument is well and good, but what about the computer. The monitor doesn't actually do any work, and can always be upgraded as technology improves. This isn't the case for the guts of the machine.

I just bought a dual core something-or-other (technical term...). What I learned from my experience with BestBuy (the devil), is that the hp model sucked **** and didn't work three times before they gave me a gateway that works real well. I'm a big fan of warranties now that I used to think were a bad idea... Ummm... I'm off track... Oh, yeah, upgradable issues...

I don't think you can upgrade a 32 bit processor to a 64 bit processor. I thought all the single processor boards were 32 bit. I think windows vista is designed for 64. Still, there is the issue of how much the systems will improve in the next year. I bought a dual core because I want the option of having the **** computer that could utilize the buggiest new software package ever. Something massachistic about my attitude toward technology. Plus, I already have a very nice flatscreen, and the computer was only like $650.

Boughted it last night.

It just came with the PC and keyboard/mnouse, no moniter, so dropping anything for RAM wasn't an option. But I've got a 256 stick in my old PC and ram is dirt cheap anyway. And $570 Canadian ain't bad, I guess.

The only thing I wasn't sure about was the processor. 3.4geegahaearts, but from some backwater brand I think.

-looks- AMD Cempron. Also, I'm picking up a used 20" monitor from a friend so I can watch LOST on a screen that's the same size as my **** television.
