Where are the anecdotes?
Geesh.
NOTE: This story comes with added sound effects.
Okay so Guankim introduced me to some of his friends. One of them was Eckardt. Eckardt wanted to farm chips in Pso'Xja, *CLICK* and farming in Castle Oz wasn't going *CLICK-whirrr* so great for me *CLICK* (I died and couldn't *CLICK* find a raise) so we went *CLICK*, and the first diremite we kill *CLICK-whirrr* drops a chip, then the 5th or *CLICK-whirrr* so drops one, and we're done. So then we're looking for *CLICK* something do to, and he suggests avatars. *CLICK*
(What the hell is that clicking noise? Is there something in the hallway.... no, there doesn't seem to be anything odd out here. It sounds like it's coming from inside my room. Maybe I can hear what it is better if I turn down the music...)
So he D2's *CLICK* me, which I'm not used to since *CLICK-whirrr* (Oh sh't, is that my hard drive? Dammit, where the hell is my Windows disc?) I haven't really got any friends that are BLMs *CLICK* that I *CLICK* run around with. When I get *CLICK-whirrr* back to Bastok, I have to mule my shield with *CLICK* +elemental resist on it to myself so *CLICK-whirrr* that I can survive avatar 2HR's and *CLICK* *CLICK* my computer mystierously *CLICK* *CLICK-whirrr* crashes, but I don't catch the BSOD error, and I log back on.
(Please don't die. Please don't die. Please don't die. Please don't die. Where the f'ck is my install disc??!)
It takes *CLICK* a *CLICK* little *CLICK* while *CLICK-whirrr* for my game to load, but finally it does, and we're off to go fight Ramuh *CLICK* first. The fight goes well, although Eckardt died... him meleeing and curing *CLICK* me was generating a little too much enmity for *CLICK* just thf tanking, and he bit it to a blood pact, but reraised and we won. *CLICK-whirrr* Then we turned in whispers and decided what we were going to do next.
(Sweet, hanging around in Norg, and it seems to have stopped clicking, maybe it's just not level, I'll check my case... there, now it's perfectly level, and I'm ready to continue.)
We start heading to the Den of Rancor, but make a short side trip to *CLICK* get him an Uggalepih key so that he can get a paintbrush of souls, but two or three kills and we've got the key, so it's not that big of a sidetrip.
Then we go and duo leviathan, which goes alright, because this *CLICK* time he's playing true backline and just hanging back and curing and doing barwatera *CLICK* and we finish and win. We're not breaking any records or anything, but neither of us died, so that's the important thing.
We go back to Norg to turn in whispers, but by this point he's *CLICK-whirrr* getting sleepy, so he decides to turn in for the night. I fail to come up with something to do and decide to go explore Pso'Xja. *CLICK* *CLICK* I OP to Beaucedine Glacier *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK-whirrr* *CLICK* *CLICK* but the zone doesn't *CLICK-whirrr* load, and my computer crashes again.
This time, I catch the BSOD error and it's kernel_package_exchange_error, which I quickly Google, only to discover it's indicative of a HDD error. I pop open my case and check my cables, but neglect to notice that I've pulled free my USB keyboard and turn my PC back on. Windows pops up the message about *CLICK* checking the disk for consistency and running CHKDSK, but I wanted to run it from safe mode and couldn't figure out why it wasn't giving me the option *CLICK* and mashing the spacebar to cancel isn't working. *CLICK-whirrr*
So then it auto repairs a few files, all ones with names like 35.DAT, and I'm not sure if they're FFXI files (my first thought), or something else, but my computer reboots and seems fine for about an hour.
(Thank god that's fixed. I was worried I'd have to reinstall to my 2nd HD and struggle through copying off all of my important files like pictures of my family and such, now I can go back to procrastinating burning a backup of them!)
I go into Pso'Xja, and am wandering around. I click a ??? and some NM golems spawn which seem to switch off damage absorbtion, so I find that by switching between the two I can avoid hitting for 0, and that's cool, exploring is fun.
Then I get a little deeper and realize that I can't go backwards, and guessing by the level of the mobs around me and taking stock of my lack of bloody bolts (used the remainder of my last stack not 30 mins earlier during my exploration) *CLICK* (What the f'ck was that? Did it just click? Oh, hell no.) and realize that I can't go forward either without risking death, which will probably be my only means to leave the zone, as I've also neglected to *CLICK* bring along a warp scroll.
And that's when it happens. *CLICK* My entire system freezes. *CLICK-whirrr* *CLICK-whirrr* *CLICK-whirrr* FFXI crashes *CLICK-whirrr*, and the last thing I see before another *CLICK* BSOD and ultimate *CLICK-whirrr* system breakdown is Windows telling me that my FFXI log directory is corrupted. *CLICK* (Oh sh't.) *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK-whirr* *CLICK* *CLICK* (Oh sh't. Oh sh't. Oh sh't.) *CLICK-whirr* *CLICK* *CLICK-whirr* *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK-whirr* *CLICK* *CLICK-whirr* *CLICK* (Ohsh't.Ohsh't.Ohsh't.Ohsh't.Ohsh't.) *CLICK-whirr* (No.No.No.No.No.No.NoNoNoNoNononononono. YOU F'CKING BASTARD PIECE OF MAXTOR SH'T YOU CAN'T DIE ON ME I HAVEN'T GOT AN INSTALL DISC!!!) *CLICK-whirr* *silence* (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
FFXI Microsoft Windows killmed my hard drive. I'm certain of it. Bill Gates was
obviously jealous that I was going to hit 75 before Dynamis this Saturday.
