Everything you ever wanted to know about the "BAD players" thread but were too afriad to ask:
- What is the BPT?
- The BPT is where we come to rant after we've had a bad experience. It is Garuda server's one and only truly legendary thread.
- All names and anecdotes posted in the BPT should be taken with a grain of salt. Many of the people who come to post in the BPT may be upset at the time of their writing. Sometimes people do and say things they later regret, don't mean, or don't express properly. Most of the people posted as bad players aren't - they were simply having a bad day. Everyone has had a bad day, made a poor decision, or screwed up. It's human.
- Very few names are found repeated through the BPT. Generally the repeating names are people who are/were downright rude, and never changed their attitudes. Attitude has nothing to do with skill as a player; it affects only your reputation. But, in an MMORPG, often your reputation is all you have to stand by. If you've had a bad day, made a poor decision, or screwed up, and you've hurt someone by doing so, the best, and often only thing you can do is apologise. FFXI is a social game. Please keep that in mind.
- I want to post my story - can you give me any pointers?
- If you're thinking about posting a story about a bad experience, stop. Take 10 deep breaths. Think about how much (or how little!) this experience has affected you. Consider how you would feel if the post were about you. Remember that you are posting on a public forum, and by doing so, you are also laying yourself at the metaphorical feet of the board to be judged. Any user can respond to your post. Sometimes they may not agree with what you have to say. Sometimes they may respond in a very rude or mean fashion. Please understand that not everyone may agree with what you have to say. Your Allakhazam karma and your reputation in game may suffer as a result. If you are willing to accept the possible consequences of your action, then post.
- You tried to trick me, those weren't pointers, that was advice!
- My apologies. If you've read the above and still want to post your story, please follow these simple guidelines:
- Refrain from using obscenity in your post. Using foul language is not necessary to get your point across. Many people view others with "potty mouths" in a poor light.
- Refrain from name-calling. There's no need for name-calling when relaying a bad experience. Resorting to such is considered juvenile by many people. Outright flames will not be tolerated. Expect to get rated into the ground for behaving like a child.
- Use proper capitalization, punctuation, and paragraph breaks, and avoid abbreviating your words. You may want to hurry through typing up your post, or perhaps you don't always use proper English on "teh internets". If your post is unintelligible, you will almost be guaranteed a bad reception, regardless of its actual content.
- Post the entire story. If you screwed up as well, you will take a lot less flack for admitting as much from the beginning. Note also that, in the sick social science of the situation, admitting you've screwed up before someone else can call you on it tends to take it away as a "Yeah, well you did this!" style argument.
- Is that everything?
- Yes, just keep these things in mind, and you'll be fine.
- You lied to me! I posted and I got flamed!
- Did you read the advice I gave you? This is a social game and a social board. Not everyone will agree with you. If you were unwilling to accept that others might argue against you, then you should not have posted.
On a side note, for several of the earlier pages of the BPT, many of the posts are defaulted (as in... for the majority of the page). The most recent pages are not. (As of this writing, the last page on the BPT is #50.) I cannot promise you that any of the current thread regulars will take your posts seriously. It is quite reasonable to assume that your slab of beef may be thrown on the grill and abandoned, or simply accepted as "one more post on the way to 99 pages." Don't take offense. Grab your Hibatchi, pull up a chair and share some nonsense and meet the regulars while waiting to be fed.
A guide to this guide:
This guide is separated by page. Each page is 50 posts. In order for your perusal of the thread to match this guide, your forum preferences must be set to show "50 posts per page" and you must be set to "Never Filter".
Pages will be listed using the following:
- Page marker: Page X: Day ## Year to Day ## Year
- Self-submitted names will be displayed in orange.
- 3rd party submitted names that are not defended will be displayed in yellow.
- 3rd party submitted names that are defended will be displayed in red.
- Pink names are names submitted 3rd party, but blatantly in jest.
- Dark blue names are names that appear in a reply that I can't find anywhere previously. I'm going to assume the original was deleted.
- Green names are NPCs.
- A short summary, notes, or quote may follow a submitted name.
- A short summary of an entire page may be given after all names found on that page are listed.
- Black will denote any of my personal points of interest, such as posts that made me chuckle. Consider them to be archiver's notes!
- Random, unnamed players posted will NOT be listed. I'm going to assume anyone reading this thread is looking for their own name...
There may be some mistakes with defended/not defended status. It's hard to keep track from page to page.
