This is my bazaar comment:
“Happy now? Were your pants going
to ******* burst, if you didn’t find out
what I had in my left ring hand slot?”

It’s not being examined so much as not knowing why people examine me that bothers me. This feeling manifested itself when I was leveling my THF sub, I was just wearing leather armor and leveling in Konchstat, yet people on chocobos were examining me. Like they never saw a set of leather armor before?

Clearly I’m wearing low-level armor and I’m in a low-level zone, why would some high-levels examine me if I won’t be of any use to them? I can’t pt with them, I can’t help them with any quests or missions.

Then random people examine me when I’m walking around. I don’t have my flag up, that means I don’t want to join a party so there’s no reason why anyone would examine me to see if I could be a potential party member. Whether I’m wearing Scale armor or the Centurion set, people examine me for a reason that I cannot figure out.

What’s the mentality of people who examine me? Here’s a couple that I thought of:

1. “Wow, what’s he wearing? I never saw that before. I’ll just take a quick look-see.”
They are genuinely curious with what I’m wearing and have never saw what I was wearing.

2. “Let’s examine everyone I pass by to annoy them!”
Well, except that wouldn’t have been properly puntcuated or spelled right or grammatically correct or intelligible or anywhere near a complete thought, but nonetheless the point of the matter still remains. They’re idiots, they just examine people to annoy them. Had a couple of run ins with people like that.

3. “Oh, that guy I’m passing by and don’t know better be wearing the best gear for his or her level!”
They’re elitists and have to see if my rings, belt, back, and earrings are up-to-date as you can’t see those visual on anyone’s character model. If not they make snide comments to themselves and giggle to themselves in real life. Highly unlikely, but it could be.

4. “What’s that guy wearing? It looks like a Doublet, which is a level eleven armor. He’s fighting Hill Lizards in Valkurm Dunes which is what most people 10-13 level off of. He’s doing little damage to the lizards too, so he has to be around levels 11-13. But what if it’s a HQ version of a Doublet? Oooh, I can’t stand it anymore. I have to find out! /c <t>. Yep, just a Doublet.”
Now they’re just crazy idiots. Still, this would be my second choice.

5. “Hey look at that. Someone that’s wearing what I know looks like a Centurion mail. I really shouldn’t examine them. (walks away a bit) Hey, my pants feel tickly. Feels kinda good ^^. Whoa, this feels really good. (small ripping sounds) O-ow! OW! Oh God! Why does it hurt?! Aaah, make it stop! /c <t>. GA~AH!

Well, as you can see from my bazaar comment I think its number five. Let’s not just angry at random people who examine you, let’s find out why they examine us. Feel free to add your thoughts on why people examine you. You can’t solve the problem unless you know what caused it.

I know, you don't want to see what I post, but I have to say it. What a retarded thing to complain about. of ALL things in the game to complain about, being checked and having "So and so examines you." pop up in your chat box should be the last thing on your list.

I mean, does the color of the text hurt your eyes when they examine you? Please explain it better to me why you people don't like it so that I can better understand how it effects you, cause honestly I don't.

I mean, people could check you to see what your wearing so they can make plans for what they want. People could be checking you to see if your a beginner or a veteran. They could be checking you to see if you have a Title or Items they have never seen and are just trying to learn more about what's to come. They could also be checking you to see if you'd be worthwhile to answer any inquiries they may have to the game.

I don't know about you, but I like to answer beginner questions. I guess I would like the game to go back to the way it use to be when "Community" in the ad's use to mean something.

Anyway, that was off the topic, so explain to me how being checked effects you, I sincerely would like to learn where your coming from with this. thx.

That's a nice way to think, but for the past month (when I wasn't leveling my THF) I was wearing my fishermen's gear. My motives are simple and clear, I'm fishing or going to somewhere to fish. Most people who are wearing fishermen's gear don't wear any rings, belts, earrings, or capes to save space for more fish. Could they be examining me to find out what rod or bait/lure that I'm using? But what will they do if they find out what I'm using? Figure out what fish I'm going to catch and then give themselves a pat on the back for guessing that?

Maybe I should've have written it as, "It's not being examined so much as not knowing why people are examining me that bothers me." I dislike not knowing an answer. I would like to think that there is a reason for an action, whether it is a logical reason or just plain idiocy. Why would someone examine me? I'm left with no answer when someone does a run by examining. At least I know why a party memeber is examining, or if I shouted help for a quest or mission. That's all there is to it, I have a question that I would like to be answered.

Whoa there cowboy. Is this the first time you've read something pointless on the internet? I'm allowed to complain about what I want, you're allowed to call what I complain about retarded. I'm pretty sure someone out there has complained something way more petty than this.


So, you're saying a person would examine someone just to find out their title or any item they never saw before? What would they do with that information? What a very random way to see if one person out of three thousand (possible five thousand if everyone were on at the same time) would have something or title you've never seen before.

Why would someone value a title so much? Does someone's title tell you something about them? Sure, if you just examined someone and found out their title was "Have Wings Will Fly" you know they just completed mission four and have gotten their aiship pass. Or if someone's title is "Dark Sider," they just completed the Dark Knight quest and unlocked the job. How about the title "Crawler Culler," they like money? What would knowing this information about someone allow you to do? Are you going to congratulate them? Wow, you must be a real nice and positive person to be around.

How would you know what's to come from someone's equipment?
"Let's see, he has a spatha...uh...I don't know how that's going to help me."
Well, maybe there's a mission or quest that requires a specific equipment set up, like a Maat fight or if they were going to fight certain HNMs or if it was for a certain BCNM. But then again, how would you know someone is going to fight Maat or goinng to fight certain HNMs or do a specific BCNM unless you ask them.

Was there ever a time when there was a community? Yes, it would be nice if we could all hold eachother's hands and form a big chain of humes, elvaans, galkans, mithras, and tarutaru that spreads over from one continent to the next and sing some happy song. You see, what you want requires people to be smart and nice. Too few people on the internet have those qualities.

I leave with more questions than I have answers. At the least some questions were answered.

I just don't understand why it matters. As has been pointed out by the original poster and others, there can be many reasons why people check you. If you have to know the exact reason each person checks you, maybe you have some deeper issues that need to be addressed on the couch of a medical professional. Its a game, enjoy it and don't stress over the little things.



If I'm level 5 thf and you are a level 15 thf I can see what gear you are using and possibly have an idea of what I may want to use when I get to that level.

As for what you can learn from items and titles. Umm, you silly bastard. You can compare what items people are wearing and make your own conclusions on what seems to be the popular items to wear for that job/level. That's how I use to do it instead of pestering someone all the time (which i can see you doing.) So would you rather be examined or would you rather be asked? Cause if your moaning about being examined, I could just imagine the hernia you get from being asked questions that you don't know the answers to. And umm.. Why are you wearing the defensive adaman set? blah blah blah. Yeah, someone who's never examined someone to see the Adaman set's just going to know hey.. that big purple elvaan is wearing adaman set. come on now. Most beginner's don't browse the AH for that high lvl of gear. They see it on someone first.

The title.. ahh yes.. the title. It doesn't tell you anything about the person. Accept that they like the title perhaps? It doesn't effect leveling game play, or anything of the sort. It's just a small aspect of the game that people find enjoyable. You should try it. FUN. you know? Me, personally, I like the titles Black Death, Shadow Walker, Treasure-house Ransacker, and Ya Done Good! how about you?

And yes. There use to be a time of community. There still is amongst the fresh citizens of Vana'diel as well. Head back to the Dunes and you'll see people planning with each other to help each other out and giving items to each other without the fear of losing that 20gil. They lose that sense pretty much as soon as they get to Jeuno or they get into a party with a dickhead high lvl. It's sad really. But at one time we were all there and we all had that genuine want to help each other. Now we stick to our clicks. :)

Another reason why someone would check you is to see what linkshell you are in. There is no other way to ascertain this without checking or directly asking.

I dont mind being checked so much anymore unless it creates a lot of spam (this happens in lowbie areas a lot)

You wanna know why youre being checked? we'll, if you ever see 'Cowgomoo examines you.' it means:
1) i've seen you around several, if not many times, and your name stands out, and we've interracted in one way or another before...i'm curious to see how you are progressing, just as i am progressing.

2) So, why is a lvl 71 war checking that level 25 whatever?
Simple, means im curious to see your gear, because i'm thinking about leveling that job, and i want to see what kind of gear you focus on, to give me an idea on what i need

2.1) Why else is that level 71 war checking you?
I have several jobs in the 20s-30s, and like number 2, i want to see what equipment is 'preffered' by players to give me an idea of what to aim for.

2.2) What else could that 71 war be checking you for?
Ok, so im a 27 paladin, and i check you, a level 25-30 pld... I compare equipment, and such, and sometimes ask 'is it worth it?'

3) What ls are you in? Sometimes i check that if the player looks familiar.

4) Wow! ive NEVER seen that gear before! (yes, a level 71 who hasnt seen everything!)

5) What do i do when i get checked?
I /check myself and look at what they are seeing, as i smile with all my hard work being looked at by someone elses curiousity. If it were sexual, they'd just do some /em toward ya.

That's fine, as long as the person knows you, checking them is okay.



It's called the Auction House, buddy. A level 71 should have a better grasp as to which equipment would be best suited for their job at that level than a level 25 first timer, and with the Auction House, there's a wide array of choices for every equipments. There is no way to tell if the person you're /c is wearing the proper gear for their level so that point is moot.



What is 'preferred' by people does not mean the standard equip. I do a /sea all inv 24<26 when I'm at around that level and I see a bunch of people with gimp subs, does that mean I should gimp my sub too? By the way, since you have 'several' jobs from 20<30, you shouldn't need to check people unless your jobs are naked or something?



A level 71 should have a grasp concept of what item is 'worth it' or not unless you ebayed or just came out of a coma or something. I raised PLD to 37, and guess where I got which items to wear? The Auction House, maybe you should try it sometimes.



If you 'know' the person, you'll most likely know their LS anyways. A simple /tell works too, but like I said earlier. It's ok if you personally know the person and are not just some newb running by.

Auction House works wonders for that, although you should already know most, if not all the standard lower items. For the EX items, mysterytour works wonders for that. A little research wouldn't kill you, and it'd go a long way.

In short, there is no reason to /c someone if they don't have their Bazaar sign up, especially if they're /anon. Use the fscking /sea all <t> function you nosy twat. No, I don't throw a 'tantrum' when someone /c me, I just chuckle at how pathetic the person is, if they happen to be just a person running by. By the way, to those asshats who say 'omg turn on the chat filter', hey, news flash, turning on the filter doesn't stop you nosy twats from /c me.

At first, I wondered why people examined me. I figured it was because I was a level 1 in the mines wearing nothing but a bronze cap and no weapons cause I had no money -- but it didn't really bother me.

When I personally look at people, its for a few reasons:

1. If they are battling a monster solo, I will check their level to make sure they can handle it. If it looks like they are in trouble, I'll stick around to voke it off of them if they call for help.

2. To see if perhaps they are looking to party, but don't have their flag up (which happens quite a bit).

3. If they are in a group, I'll check their level to see if I might be able to join. Better than annoying them like some noob saying "what is your level". Another reason I hate people who go anonymous. Whats the point of that anyway?

So in most cases, examining someone isn't to harm them. If you think that, you're just paranoid. Usually it is because I am assessing whether they need help or might want a party. Thats it.

Cow, your responses made perfect sence, I didn't see any need for you to have to explain yourself. And to the original poster, get over it already! The feature was put into the game for a reason (the reasons that other people in this thread were nice enough to take their time and point out to you) and it seems to be staying a part of the game. Can I also point out bazaar?! Personally, I check people for all of these different reasons and sometimes just to see their title if I'm bored or curious enough, I really fail to see the issue here.

Sorry, i'm not a war/rdm so i don't know if a low level rdm goes for int, mnd, or maybe even...dare i say it? str and attack.(just like how a dark can tank at early levels, things change over time)

I'm not a RDM either, yet I know that they should have just enough MP to make the most use of their convert, and have a set of gear for INT for MB and black magic enfeebling (Blind) and a set of gear for MND for white magic enfeebling (Paralyze, Slow) and should grab a Light/Dark Staff at lvl 51+. Now how did I know that? Could it be because I think logically? Yeah, maybe you should try it. *shrug* Just a suggestion.

Are those leaping boots -really- worth all that money for thief? No way to see unless i ask someone wearing them (but they could just be wearing look-alike boots). So, i check to make sure, then i ask them...option two would be to /shout asking, or i could farm for a few days, then realize they arent that great.

So basically what you're telling me is that you went 71 levels without once thinking WHY you're wearing what you're wearing? You're just wearing said equip because you saw someone else wear it? Hmm, and here I am thinking people actually got a grip of the game by then. Since you seem incapable of thinking for yourself, I'll tell you that Leaping Boots is definately 'worth it' for THFs as their main source of damage comes from SATA, and how do you boost that? Through boosting DEX (Sneak Attack) and AGI (Trick Attack)

I noticed something the other day, gear can look different when you equip it, than it does in the image on the description, so out of curiousity, i checked a few of them that way. sorry if it disturbs you that much.

Oh yeah! i remember now, i /checked sayainz in ballista that one time accidentally...its a habit for me to /c a monster i'm fighting. sorry if youre still pissed about that mistake ^^

Yeah, because I keep a list of people that have /c me in the past so I can pull it out and laugh at them when I see them, right?

I really don't know what the big deal is about checking other people and actually till now have not thought twice about checking someone not jp.
Reasons why I /c people:
1) if your high level gear looks awesome i'd like to see what it was. Just plain curiousity. Not every piece of gear is up at the AH and I'm not going to log out of game to check mysterytour to find out when I can just check the player in front of me.
2) Being a whm/rdm I seriously care about people leveling in the base areas and will slap a protect or cure on them if I think they need it. I know I could do a /sea <t> but that's so much more typing than tab, enter, up arrow, enter for me. (I don't have a good grasp on the auto run so if i'm in the middle of typing and have to change directions it can be bad)
3) The LS. Some of the linkshell names are funny to me so I like to see the names. Also with some of the ls's you can tell what kind of person that player is, maybe they would help you do a mission or quest in the future or not

There are probably other reasons and I may update them later but for now I'm tired and want to go to bed.

I kinda made this topic as half a joke and half serious, I wonder about your reasons for examining someone. My first post was dripping with sarcasm. You guys are too serious (except for Cowgomoo, he was trying to be a little funny), I was expecting some posts like, "Hey, think about it. They’re checking you out. Maybe they’re looking for something more than your equipment?”

I just thought that it would a good joke because its something we have done, done to us, and face on a day to day basis. You know, like, "Hey, don't you hate the post office?" or "Yeah, two phone books, what's up with that?"

Yes, but then you will have no way of knowing if someone is checking you and then maybe you will realize that it doesn't affect your gameplay in anyway.

Seriously, I dunno if its funny or disturbing how much being checked bothers you.

reasons I have checked people:<1>usually to see a piece of gear I haven't seen.<2>strategy,I've seen players do things that I've never seen done,so I have checked them to try and figure out what job/level they are,and maybe if I think they might answer back,I might ask a question or two even.

My rating is alot like being /checked to me...it honetly doesnt effect me.If I reach a point to where my rating is too low to post then I will just read.It is only a game I play...and this is only a forum about a game I play.

Low lvl RDM - Cure and Enfeeble, mixed with a little meleeing. Happy? Learn to think for yourself.

Low lvl THF - Pre 15, carry a bow and arrow so you aren't totally useless, use bow and arrow in between SA post 15 until lvl 30 so you can do good damage in between.

Obviously a RNG would be able to own a DRK (Especially one using gimped equip, since I didn't have much lvl 60 gear), I can't remember if I ever called you a noob, so meh. Although I'm always up for a lvl 30 match as my RNG, or THF. :)

Most people are too lazy to write "you're" instead of "your" I am intelligent enough to know the differ, but i just overlook it because im not writing a English Research paper.... hell, im writing on a forums. Grammar and punction will be pretty bad, but im sure you will be able to decipher what they are saying. =)

You're right, I don't expect them to write 'perfect' English, but when some douchebag is insulting my intelligence, you're damn right I'm going to call him out on his stupidity.

P.S. This 'rating' crap is the most idiotic system ever, since it's accessable to idiots. Pretty much, you have to sugar coat everything you say and be all nice and loving or some douchebag that you insulted rates everyone of your post 'awful'.
