Does anyone here have a BLM that uses a shield? Should a blm use one? if so, what's a good shield to use? or better yet, what kind of mods should i be looking for on a shield?

if you CAN, you may as well, but not at the cost of INT/MP boosting equipment if gil is short or hard to come by.

it should also be noted that the amount of shields blms can even equip is very low, so it's generally not a huge concern. i don't think my lv18 can even equip one yet.

From what I've seen, the shields that are equipable by BLMs are more of a novelty than anything practical. There are also a couple of swords that a BLM can equip, but again just a novelty.

The problem with both of these choices is you don't have a shield skill or a sword skill, so they're are essentially worth it. Having a shield is not so much about the additional defense but is more about being able to block with your shield, which negates an entire attack.

My advice, forget the shield and go with a nice wand or staff that gives you bonuses to INT and/or MP, and never choose one based on damage, bonuses are your friend.

EDIT: Just thought I would point out that I AM NOT a black mage, so take any of my advice knowing that I speak from a Paladin's perspective on what I THINK about Black Mages.

Prior to level 51, you'll be using a wand/club most of the time for the obvious INT/MND bonuses, having a shield is not necessarily a novelty. At 29, you can equip a faerie shield, which gives +3 to all elemental resistance. Meaning if you are xping against magic users, you'll have a good chance of resisting against its spell = reduced damage. At my level I still use this shield. At the moment I only have ice staff and dark staff, so whenever I use aero 3, I change equipment to fey wand/fearie shield. So its still good.
