It's just poor marketing, what we really have here is a forest rejuvenation project.

We're building a transportation corridor so that the remains of an ancient forest can be recycled. We'll process those remains in a carefully controlled manner so that the carbon can be incorporated into forests around the world. Turning lifeless black sludge into a rich and diverse tropical rainforest with the help of millions of people around the country and around the world.

I just found out that 45 approved a budget that will give me my first raise in the last ten years starting next January. You know, if you ignore the raise this year, 2017, 2016, 2015 ... actually, every year there was at least a percentage increase going back to at least the 1960s. Okay, he misspoke, and actually meant that it was the biggest pay raise in ten years starting next year, at 2.6% (which, mind you, was Congress' decision, since 45's wanted 2.1%, which is equal to the ECI which is what all the previous raises were based on) ... which also isn't true since 2010 was 3.4%, and 2009 was 3.9%. Then Paul Ryan has finally come in to say biggest raise in eight years, which finally makes that statement true.

So I guess what I'm saying is that if you can change enough details in a fiction you can eventually make it true!

alternative ending here:

Smiley: schooled China gives a ton of trade concessions, and helps push NK to the bargaining table
Smiley: schooled Trump hands them back some of the losses he inflicted in return

Trump is playing a strong negotiating game here. He understands that if you simply ask for something, you'll have to give something in return. But if you start out taking something from the other guy first (or even just threaten to do so), you can then give it back (or not take it in the first place) in return for a concession from the other side. If you've been paying any attention at all to what's been going on, you'd have noticed that he's been basically getting stuff from China (and others) more or less just for the promise to back down on something he threatened to do.

That's smart negotiating. Of course, it sends the Chicken Littles spinning around crying about "OMG! Trade wars", but the results have (so far at least) been that he drops the hard line at the 11th hour in return for concessions. This is the same thing.

I see your alternate dimension doesn't include the Trump property deals. What is it like, in that strange place, where trump is a decent, capable politician and human being?

There is no "alternative ending". China is literally backing a half billion to help a theme park with Trump properties. Not trade concessions but a $500mil real estate deal.

Speaking of alternative facts, over the weekend Giuliani claimed that Mueller told him that the obstruction probe would be concluded by September 1st. Even at the time, I thought "He's probably just making that up".

Oh, hey, he totally just made that up and was told no such thing. Who could have guessed?

Oh yeah. Totally. Why, Trump got huge concessions like China dropping their new agricultural tariffs in exchange for Trump dropping his new tariffs. Oh, and they'll buy "more" soy -- after they previously stopped buying any US soy. So we're right back where we started when Trump said that we're losing badly to China. We did get a vague and nonspecific promise to look into importing more US energy and agricultural goods though. So that's... something?

But, hey, I'm just some liberal. I probably just don't "get it".

But hey! We're going to let the ZTE thing slide provided ZTE pays some fine and gets new people on their board. Uh, things ZTE was supposed to do anyway as part of their sanctions. And China will totally lower some automotive import tariffs! Except, uh, most of China's automotive imports come from Europe and Asia and those tariffs are being lowered as well. #USAWinning #StrongNegotiation #GettingStuffFromChina

A "theme park with Trump properties". Interesting phrasing. The deal between the Trump organization and the Lido project was signed 3 years ago. It has nothing at all to do with anything happening now. One part of the project involves Trump branded stuff (a hotel and golf course I believe). That component is completely unrelated to the loans for other parts of the project, and unrelated to the construction contract granted to a Chinese company.

You're going to rapidly run into silliness if you insist that no company anywhere in the world that does any business with any company connected to Trump's businesses can also do business with any other company that has connections to any of a largish list of countries that you might choose on any given day to decide we shouldn't do business with. That's literally the connection here. It's likely saying that if you rent a spot in a mall, and the mall hires a company to do construction work on a restaurant on the other end of the mall, you're somehow connected directly with that deal. That's an absurd standard to try to apply.

There's a reason why even the mostly left leaning and anti-Trump mainstream media isn't jumping on this story, and it's relegated to online sources and gossip columns. It's an incredibly thin connection. Yes, I suppose you could argue that by obtaining a loan, the project gains solidity, and that this could mean financial gain for the part that Trump is involved in. But there's no indication that this loan was made with terms any different than any other loan from any other backer or source. And unlike say Obama handing out free money to businesses owned by people who supported his election using government money, this isn't a freaking subsidy. There's no reason to provide a quo to this quid because there's nothing gained here.

Quote:
Not trade concessions but a $500mil real estate deal.

Except removal of tariffs on some US products. And (presumably) help with the NK stuff going on. And possibly other things that aren't so clear (or public) right now. There's are some tech related deals going on right now, that would seem to be far more likely related to a position on ZTE by the US as part of the negotiations. But let's ignore that and go with "unrelated business deal which may or may not actually benefit Trump at all".

I reject it because it's silly. May as well blame it on bigfoot or something.

Yeah, when the National Review can admit that China's loans look sketchy, I'm not going to waste a bunch of time debating Gbaji on it.

In the meanwhile, does anyone want to buy a North Korea "Supreme Leader" peace summit commemorative coin? Never used, I can promise you.
