I has a notion to do some animation for an collaborative effort with by son to create a video. The animations will be fairly simple set in front of a relatively more detailed background. It'll basically be bunnies and similar critters chatting or moving about a little. There will, of course, be audio.

So, having said that, can anyone recommend a inexpensive or free program that would work? Bear in mind that I have zero animation experience outside of helping the (ex)wife make an animation for a web page in the '90s.

GIMP is free and has instructions on how to do basic GIF-style animations. If the background is going to be motionless this may be a good choice.

I've always used Macromedia Flash. It's free if you have no qualms about pirating it via torrents(I'm also fairly sure the legitimate software comes with a 30 day free trial anyway), and fairly easy to use after a bit of running through tutorials.

Is gimp for more than gifs? Because I want to do a 15 minute long thing.

A thing that would involve overlaying the animated bit with a static background bit.

You should be able to create a 15+ minute long animation without too much issue. Does it need to be converted to a video format after it's done?

Does gimp allow for layers?

As far as the animation it should. You can then convert the gif to avi with FormatFactory. Beyond that, adding audio and such, I'm not sure.

I use Paintshop Pro 5 for all my image needs.

My image needs generally consist of resizing an image, adding some text or applying an awesome emboss effect.

Yeah; it needs audio.

You can use the free version of Any Video Converter to add and sync an audio track to the movie.
