Are people calling him a serious candidate? Was under the impression he was just a convenient dumpster to toss your vote in if you didn't like the two main choices.

That seems to be the gimmick.

Vote Jill Stein; feel less guilty about throwing away plastic bags because you already did your part to help the earth. Smiley: thumbsup

Why would I need to choose? There's already a candidate much more qualified than either of them. One who, I'm guessing, could continue naming world leaders after both those idiots have given up and gone to bed (which, in Johnson's case, is exactly zero leaders in).

But, in a binary scenario, sure I'd take Johnson over Trump. He at least has some governing experience and a couple policies I could support (although he's realistically a pretty typical Big Business Support the Rich Republican in most ways)

My vote won't affect delegate splits, MA is a safe DEM state, and I down ticket vote. My only goal in the Pres. vote is to ineffectually punish the DNC for being shitty. Therefore my optimal voting strategy is to vote third party in a direction that telegraphs my major complaints to the Party. Options are Sander's, Stein or Johnson. which of these does this most optimally?

Is Sanders on the ticket there?

Between Stein and Johnson, would you rather communicate to the Democrats that you're interested in completely inexperienced woo-magic believers and 9/11 Truthers or that you support regressive taxation against the lower/middle class and elimination of corporate regulations? Once you figure that out, you're golden.

Isn't he just a pawn of big dairy?

Probably should read up on his policies more; still sounds like the best choice so far though.

He claims to be tough on urban safety but his revolving-door prison policies keep the Hamburgler on the streets more often than not.

To be fair there isn't really much incentive to remember once you pass the test.

I suppose I wasn't asking you specifically, because your vote was never really in question. But your glib quote, and a lot of the posts above it, are premised on the fact that a vote for Johnson is only reasonable after ruling out two qualified, relatively equal major party candidates. Given the fact that several (state-level) Republicans have endorsed or outright switched to the LP, I'd venture that a lot of them don't see it as a decision between "two major-party candidates and some guy", but rather between "one major party candidate, a narcissistic looney toon, and some guy".

Yeah yeah, party allegiance, electoral viability, etc. I'll take some guy who can't name a foreign leader he "looks up to" over two that want to either bomb or overthrow 90% of them.

Only if you equate "less regulation" with "supports big business". Typically big businesses are supportive of more regulation because it creates a larger barrier to entry for potential new competitors.

I don't support every Johnson policy (e.g. replace federal income tax with federal sales tax), but he's by far the best option for any conservative who doesn't want an ego-maniacal, thin-skinned rutabaga in the Oval Office, even if the rutabaga does know the name of the Queen of Denmark.

Depends. Some states you can, some don't support write-ins, some only allow it if the write-in is registered to be written in. In Illinois, it's the last one and you can feel all clever writing "Harambe" for president but no one will count it except for the election worker who eventually rolls their eyes and tosses your ballot out.

Well, not literally since your other votes on that ballot still count

It's really less "Do they know the name of this person? Qualified!" and more indicative of their overall interest and seriousness in doing the job. Someone who can't name as many foreign leaders as my teenage son is probably not someone educated enough in foreign affairs to leading the nation in that regard. Likewise, someone who goes tharn at the word "Aleppo" really doesn't qualify for an opinion on it in my estimation. At least someone who incorrectly guesses "Capital of Syria?" or something suggests that they know it's currently a relevant place in current affairs and roughly where/what it is. This isn't doctorate level knowledge, this is "Saw the front page of USA Today while checking out of the Fairfield Inn" level knowledge.

I wish they'd have to pass at least a basic field sobriety test to be considered a candidate.

Or you could vote for the person who mostly aligns with your political beliefs. Which, if you support Sanders, is factually Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is much closer to Sanders than Gary Johnson, which means if you're voting for Johnson, it isn't based on policies.

Really it'd be nice to have it in the voting booths as well, but voter turnout is low enough as it is, so that probably wouldn't fly. The thought of a candidate being removed from the race for slipping and breaking a hip while trying to stand on one foot is pretty entertaining though.
