Quick tangent re: abortion. I saw a headline on one of my various right-wing blogs about a Clinton Conspiracy to fund abortions for Medicaid recipients, and the argument seemed to be that it was a poor use of taxpayer money (rather than the "it's morally wrong" argument). But it seems like the bill to taxpayers for an abortion and related medical expenses would be much less than at least 18 years of Medicaid bills for a newborn and mother.

Can one think that abortion is wrong, but still support it for Medicaid recipients on the argument that if it's going to be legal, we should at least make it as inexpensive as possible?

Oh. As to the debate itself? No clue what the polls are saying, but I don't think Trump did himself many favors there.

A new Morning Consult poll finds Donald Trump’s lead over the Republican field grew in the several days after his performance at the first GOP presidential debate.
Trump leads with 32% — up 7 percentage points over last week’s poll — followed by Jeb Bush at 11%, Ben Carson at 9%, Scott Walker at 6% and Marco Rubio at 6%.

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds Trump leading with 24%, followed by Jeb Bush at 12%, No other candidate earned more than 8%.

If you're going to make a purely pragmatic decision, then sure, you'd need to suppress your own... revulsion, I guess. I don't see how one could really square that and live with it, if you really feel it's murder. I suppose if it comes down to apocalyptic competition for resources, you just make the best decision you can and live with it.

By the same token, I don't understand how people can vote against feeding hungry kids; but damned if they don't do it all the time.

In other news, it looks like Rick Perry is about to throw in the towel. He's stopped paying campaign staffers, or at least the ones in South Carolina, apparently because his war chest is depleted.

A little surprising. Back before the whole primary salad bowl started, Perry was thought to be a contender this time around with a sharpened up approach and snazzy smart-person glasses.

And enough baggage to sink a barge. He was never going to be President.

I didn't think he'd be president but I thought he's do better than #14 out of 16 or wherever he's placing right now.

Cruz took over the crazy gun-nut spot and Perry had nothing left to distinguish himself from the pack.

That, and there are just too many pigs for the teats. I'm happy, personally, that 16 people are draining resources that one might otherwise have used effectively down the road.
