Quick google shows it was less holding him and ICE was asking to be notified of the release. Either way, it seems like departmental dick measuring that needs to be ironed out.

It's a bit worse than that actually. Apparently, he had just finished serving a federal prison sentence and was already in ICE custody to be deported when the SF DA office (I think that's who?) requested that ICE hand them to their custody to pursue some old drug charges he had in SF. After a month or so, the SF DA decided to drop the charges, and despite having been asked by ICE to inform them if they were going to release him, chose not to inform them and just released him on the streets.

As I stated earlier, this suggests an active effort to prevent deportations, apparently with no regard for who the person in question is. While I suppose it's possible that the SF DA really did want to pursue a drug charge against him, it's also possible that this technique (request a transfer for a deportee on a local charge and then drop said charge in order to prevent deportation) is just a standard thing that some folks do as part of the fight against deportation. It's just hard to see stuff like this and other immigration actions (like that whole nuttiness at UCSC) and not see a pattern of certain people taking ridiculous actions in the name of fighting for the right of illegal immigrants to stay in the US. I could totally see someone that invested in this fight actively seeking out people on a deportation list and then finding any way possible to "save" them.

You'd think at some point someone would step back and ask if this is really the kind of person we want in the US in the first place? Forest and trees and all that, right?

I find it amusing how much of a hard on you have for small government and things being handled locally, but your first assumption is that the local government is corrupt.

I can tell you that the awesome efficiency of the SF City Council is such that, if their goal were to actively prevent deportations, this would be a ghost town.

No one is saying this wasn't a colossal ****-up. It patently was. But the whole evil conspiracy to keep criminals walking the streets among us? Doesn't scan.

Keeping multiple felony convicts who've been deported numerous times out is one thing. Piggybacking on it to build a wall to keep out all the Irish is another.

So, I found this interesting, in a really depressing way.

Our beloved sheriff is an... interesting person. High drama in his personal life, high drama in his public life. I don't know what bearing this really has on the shooting, but it's a pretty toxic situation all around.

Ah, local politics. It's the best show in town.

We've been pretty quiet lately. I think all we really have is Mayor De Blasio vs Uber and the "Ten Hours of Catcalls" lady suing a bunch of people for using her likeness or some such.

You know, last night Angela Merkel was on German TV and a young female refugee in the audience told her that all of her friends were going off to uni and she wanted to also but she was afraid she was going to be deported. Merkel responded by telling her, in sum, "well we can't just take in everyone, sorry about that" and she's facing a **** storm this morning because of that.

I know, different country. But the same thing happens here - there are unlawful immigrants (an illegal is a sick bird) who's children establish a life here, make contributions, and are afraid of being deported. Wherever you stand on the issue, you need to understand that there's an anti-gbaji somewhere looking at that kid, who just wants to go to uni and make a positive contribution to the country, and saying that "You'd think at some point someone would step back and ask if this is really the kind of person we want to kick out of the US in the first place?"

I guarantee that anti-gbaji would agree that the dickhead in SF is not the kind of person we want in the US in the first place. But unrelated, individual cases do not make for strong evidence one way or another. Also, maybe if things weren't so bad over there, "they" wouldn't want to come over here.

Back on Trump, the Huffington Post says that they will be reporting on Trump in the entertainment section of the website instead of the news/politics section.

I think this is pretty dumb. Regardless of anyone's suspicions on why he's running, Trump is a declared candidate, filled out the paperwork, leads the GOP polls and is as much a candidate as anyone right now. He should be covered the same as the rest of them. If they haven't yet, I expect HP to back off this decision... "Heh, just kidding guys..."

Having an opinion on the editorial decisions of the Huffington Post would necessitate that I give a non-zero amount of fucks about the Huffington Post in the first place. They can report on him in the Classified section for all I care.

Salon, on the other hand, needs to fire their entire writing staff into the sun.

Well, I heard about it on my morning ride on the BBC news and this is their headline at the moment: Angela Merkel attacked over crying refugee girl. Much as I hate the way the BBC announcers insist on mis-pronouncing every word that ends in "a" or "aw" as though it ended in "er" I have to say it's the best news feed available to me in the car. I'm not taking a position on it, it just came to mind as an example for me.

Apparently Trump asserted that Rick Perry should be required to take an IQ test to qualify for candidacy, and that Perry misused the word "demagoguery" with regards to Trump. Oddly, he seems to have used it exactly as he should have.

Surprised he's not suing him for it.

I'm curious though, does Trump really need the Fox News deal? Wonder what his end game is for this candidacy. He doesn't really believe he has a chance to win, right? For as crazy as these people may seem, I doubt most of them are truly "idiots".

Well, his approval/disapproval has basically reversed itself among Republicans so, whenever he bows out, he's at least spread his brand to a bunch of chumps.

I haven't been keeping up on whether or not he's actually tried to build a campaign apparatus. State campaign offices, volunteers for petitions to qualify for the ballot, all that sort of stuff. That would be a better indication of how serious he is. Speaking more generally, man, decent help has to be hard to find with 16+ candidates in the race. There's only so many decent campaign staff to be hired and go around.

As much of a joke as Trump is, that still seems unreasonable. Then again, Reagan would have probably gotten similar reactions if the twenty-four seven all access web clickbait networks existed back then.

I found their op-ed argument that seeing Martin Luthor King Jr assassinated would be just as traumatic for Magneto as being in a concentration camp quite compelling.

Note to prospective presidential candidates: insulting a veteran and former POW, specifically about his military service, regardless of his ideology, is not a great way to score political points.
