I've had NY pizza a few times

Pizza made with highly brominated flour cooked in a 700 degree coal fired oven is a distinct thing from "NY Style" pizza. I'm not really a fan of it, but it's definitely not similar to national chain pizza in any way.

Quite frankly, I don't give a **** what you do. I have no real issues with you continuing to live in a fantasy reality. Not like there's a shortage of that going on around here.

Probably all that bromine. Which is apparently prevalent in NY pizza.

Papa John's is the first pizza joint that I'm going to when I get back to the US. It's been a hit and a miss lately, but the point is, not all of us live near real pizza places. Furthermore, if I want to taste something that is similar to pizza, I'm far better off buying from Papa John's than attempting to make my own pizza. I've done it before, not worth the effort for me.

I've had Papa John's once. While working on a big project the owner of one of the contractor companies treated us all to it one day for lunch.

It was ok, but I don't think it was any different than the numerous other chain pizza joints in the US. Including Pizza Hut, Dominos, Little Caesar's, Hungry Howie's, etc.

It's all fast food pizza.

There's definitely a difference. Rather or not either of them break out of the "fastfood" pizza taste is another issue.

Walk over to El Cajon and let us know.

I suppose biker gangs count too. Otherwise, kind of an odd choice. Working class neighborhood, to be sure. Not sure I'd call it "gang ridden". Not really a ghetto either. Pretty diverse environment (assuming we're using the classic meaning for ghetto). Funniest thing I saw in El Cajon was a big monster style truck on tiny little lowered wheels. Like he couldn't decide if he was part of the rifle rack crowd or the lowrider crowd, so he split the difference.

Oh. And for the record, my gbaji-vision initially saw "progressive form" in reference to Joph's use of I've, so take that for whatever you like. Delusional, I know!

So I was at CPK and ordered a California Club pizza cause I'd never had it and wanted to try something new. It has like olive oil, basil, bacon bits, grilled chicken, sliced tomatoes, avocados, and romaine lettuce. it was really good except that it had like a *ton* of lettuce on top. At first I was like "wtf am I going to do with all this lettuce that keeps falling off the slice whilst I'm trying to eat it?". Then I thought "Free salad!". Grabbed a fork, ate like 2/3rds of the lettuce, and then ate my pizza. Yum.

Some of us expand our horizons beyond what kind of crust we like. Just sayin'.

Sounds like chicken salad pizza, but without dressing.

There's one place locally here that I have never been to, mostly because it's the wrong direction from my house to town. It's clear on the other side of town. But a few coworkers of mine live in the area and occasionally bring the food.

One of them brought in the left overs of one of their... chicken bacon ranch, something something. Can't remember exactly what it was, other than delicious. And the crust made up a very negligible part of that deliciousness. Most of the local places here use relatively thin crusts, with not a lot of extra around the edges. The two most popular local pizza places have the toppings right up to the edge.

I like pizzas with a a thicker crust around the edge. With a slight amount of sauce and cheese covering the inside edge of the crust that gets baked on and crusty. A lot of people I have ate pizza with in the past don't eat the crusts. They'll toss the crust pieces back into the box, bare. I actually like the crust pieces, with a slight hint of sauce and toppings on the edge. Of course, not pieces left by others...

It reminds me of when I was a kid. On the weekends we used to go to Pizza Hut, and my brother and I would sit in the waiting area on these tabletop two player arcade machines playing pac-man or something like that. Then we'd get our pizza, we'd eat it, and leave the crusts. Then take the crusts home and the parents would rent a movie on the way home and when we got home we'd watch it while eating the left over crust pieces.

I really enjoy the smell of walking into a Pizza Hut. Even if I don't care much for their pizza these days. Not sure if their pizza has changed, or if my tastes have, but I find it very greasy and undercooked each time I've had it in recent years.

I think Joph's little rant was that CPK is a nationwide chain, so you can probably find one near you if you want. Didn't mean to imply that this was some special regional thing, just that there's more to pizza than what kind of crust to ladle your tomato sauce, peperoni, and cheese onto.

EDIT: And I suppose a bit of self targeted humor about how we Californians are disparaged for our foofy pizzas. I'm actually kind fine with that, because I find those kinds of pizzas way more tasty than the classic tomato sauce and cheese ones. And there's a lot more variety. Different strokes and all that.

I was just chuckling because it's like saying "Hey guys, let me tell you about the exotic burger I got from Wendy's. It had a pretzel bun!"

The strip mall pizza joint down the street sells a "100% Virgin Olive Oil in place of Pizza Sauce, Fresh Spinach, Tomato, Chicken & Crushed Garlic" pizza with avocado, bacon, etc on the menu if you so desire. They also sell artichoke hearts which sounds more interesting in theory than in practice but I guess if I'm ever at a loss for topping ideas, I have an ace card now. Lolgaxe and I mock one another about pizza crusts because neither of us will be rocked back by hearing that the other guy's places offer grilled chicken.

I'll admit that no one in my delivery radius offers guinea pig but I'm sure I could find some up on the north side where all the Peruvians hang out.

The fact that alternatives are readily available all over the place doesn't change the fact that an alarming number of people are stuck in the paradigm of "thick vs thin crust, but otherwise identical" pizza. Hence my comment about expanding horizons. I never meant to suggest that such pizza is only available in one location or another, any more than that NY style pizza is only available in NY. It's about preferences and choices and how they are associated with regions.

Heaven forbid that I suggest people try something outside the box a little.
