So, I'm moving back to 'Murica and I'm having to decide which provider I should get. I've had both, but each has gotten so much better over the years. From what I gathered, COMCAST has better Internet bundles and On Demand shows, while Direct TV has more HD channels and a better DVR. What say ye?

Get Direct TV if you love hidden fees that leech at your bank account and outsourced customer service with English so broken you won't be able to understand them.

Get Verizon FIOS if it's available in your area, you won't have to share your bandwidth with the rest of your block.

I have TWC internet. I pay for 15 megs but consistently get 25. If that's the consequence of sharing bandwidth, then I'm all for it. YMMV.

Comcast's policies haven't taken over your area yet. Wait until the merge is completed and the rates change.

I use Dish Network for TV and Comcast for internet. I'd recommend Dish Network to anyone, their prices are reasonable, their customer service is pretty decent, and they haven't jacked up my rates in years. Comcast, I'm kind of stuck with for decent internet where I live. If I had another choice, I'd drop them.

While reading the merger application, apparently my area won't have Comcast or TWC any longer, it will be whatever the third entity they're forced to create that will take over my area. Time will tell. I will most likely switch over to Cincinnati Bell FiOptics at that point.

Dish Network BLOCKED FOX News!!!!!! lol..Smiley: rolleyes

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a lot to consider. The DVR is really important. I want full functionality on all of my televisions. However, I was really disappointed in the "on demand" from DTV.

We went from Comcast to DirecTV and back to Comcast. Comcast had better service, both as in customer service and as in getting a picture on the TV. Also, they had the bundles to save on the cable/internet/phone. I'm certainly not in love with Comcast or a cheerleader for them but they are better than DirecTV.

Plus it seems like a regular occurrence that DirecTV is fighting with someone or another over channels and you get all the "You're going to lose Big Bang Theory and Mad Men and NBA Basketball and Single Housewife Duckhunter Gay Weddings of Volcano County!" commercials.

I still have a couple of months before my move, so I'm hoping that COMCAST up their DVR before I have to make my decision. I agree that COMCAST seems to have better service and money saving options with their bundles. I'm also not a fan of the weather affecting my TV.

Honestly, back when I had Dish weather rarely messed with my service. It had to be really bad weather-wise to disrupt my signal.

One thing I notice about these DVRs: I don't know if it's the same across all cable companies, but the DVRs at Charter are third party (Motorola). I looked up the user manuals for them from Motorola directly, and boy are there some nice features on them that seem to be turned on/off by the cable company. Like the Motorola HD DVR boxes appear to have the ability to share and stream their recorded videos across a local network to other DVR and Standard HD Boxes, if turned on. And from what I read Charter used to offer that as their "whole house DVR" service. But stopped doing so in favor of a "4 DVRs for the price of one + a fee". It makes me sad when my DVR in my room has a show on it that is not on my DVR in my living room and I can't watch it in the living room :(

It happened to me a couple of times, but maybe they knew I was in the South. When you're in the South, the power goes out ahead of the storm and snow flurries closes down the city.

I noticed this when trying to turn on closed caption. There was literally a "code" that I had to punch in to get into a "secret" menu to turn it on.

Oh yeah, if you decide you don't want Direct TV and try to cancel, they'll charge you $700. A week later, UPS will come to your place unexpectedly to collect your DVR, which they will then return to Direct TV, remove the hard drive from it, then mail the DVR back to you... then charge you for it. I'm not even joking.

Apparently all of this is in the terms the awkward lesbian who first hooks up your service tells you she is literally not allowed to show you.

Was it awkward because of the terms, or because she realized she couldn't live out her cable "guy" **** fantasy because you were there and your wife wasn't?

Apparently pr"0"n has been filtered and I didn't know it. Thanks Google. Smiley: disappointed

I'm more impressed that she could tell him her sexual preference but not the DirecTV contract terms.

They tried charging me $500+ once before I had to clarify that I was deployed. I think the charge is like cell phones where they charge you based on the remaining months. Part of that is because they give you a large discount on most of the promos. They are great until they end your bill doubles. I've been fortunate that I've always moved right before or after the end of any promo.

I was dreading going with Comcast because of horror stories I'd heard/read, but I've had no issue with them. The few times I've had to call and report an outage they've been efficient and polite, and fixed the problem right away.

Comcast isn't always terrible. Their TV service has been good, their internet service used to be consistent, but it has become ******. It doesn't really disconnect, but goes through periods of horrendous packet loss.

I haven't had any problems with Comcast's internet but that may very much be a YMMV thing. But I hear people complain about downloading a 25gb game and think "Huh, wasn't any problem for me".

The only time I've even wondered about the speed was during the Comcast vs. Netflix kerfuffle last year. I definitely noticed something was wrong with my Netflix speed.
