Same here. ( well, I can't say "never" as I'm sure I did in school and the ARMY, but I've never gotten one of my own accord as an adult).

I don't get colds or the flu or sick at all. Neither does my Mom. Odd thing is, my sisters do. Not only do they get sick, the also have straight up "diseases" One has MS, another pretty much is "always" sick and has Trigeminal neuralgia and lupus and my youngest sister weighs about 350lbs and has pretty much every disease that could possibly be associated with being that heavy.

My point? Not sure. I'm at home and drunk and tired, but I think I was thinking about something along the lines of herd immunity and how you'd think a "herd", especially as close as direct relatives would have more similar disease resistance and what that has to do with vaccinations and transmission rates and..fuggit, I'm drunk.

get your shots, stay in school and don't eat that yellow snow.

I never used to get the flu or much of anything. Then living Petri dishes moved into my house and through continual exposure to flu's and what not, I end up catching something.

I'm guessing you're both like me in that you have resistance to most flu's but immune you are not. Through continued exposure to someone who is sick (like when it runs through 1 child, to another, then to your wife covering a 14 day period), you'll catch it as well.

You're probably right. I don't have any children and am rarely around them.

Edit: More data to support your position. My sisters do have children.

So I guess the moral of the story is that the key to surviving the impending end of the world plague is to avoid children at all cost.

I know it makes you mad when people keep pointing out that you're not remotely the smartest guy in the room

I'm not sure he's ever been the smartest guy on the bicycle.

If you've never been sick then I would ask how old are you? When I was in my mid-twenties I worked as a Pharmacist in a Community Pharmacy. I stood across a two-foot wide counter from sick people all day long, handing them their medication vials, taking their prescriptions and their money, and explaining how to take their medication. I never got sick. Now, things are a little different.

So, if you aren't getting sick it may be that you have a particularly robust immune system. But you also may be exposed to the virus and it just does not reach the level necessary to cause symptoms. I don't know. But I don't find it surprising that some people never get sick.

Much of the central and south American population was wiped out because they lacked herd immunity to diseases which Europeans did have herd immunity to.

Europeans did not have "herd immunity" to smallpox. Europeans died of smallpox on a pretty regular basis or even moreso when a major outbreak would occur. They simply had more overall resistances to it as a result of living with it for ages.

Yeah. Herd immunity is not 100%. It's about probability. That's the whole point.

Want to know when we developed herd immunity to smallpox? When we started vaccinating for it. I know it makes you mad when people keep pointing out that you're not remotely the smartest guy in the room but quit while you're behind, ok?

Wiping out a disease is neato, but not really what we're talking about here. Also, not terribly applicable to the flu.

Using vaccination to artificially increase herd immunity against the flu is like trying to hold back the ocean with a screen door. It simply does not work. There are mountains of evidence that it does not work (technically, it just works very very poorly). The flu virus changes too quickly, there are too many variations, and immunity is relatively short lived. I'm not saying that people should not get flu shots if they want to, or if they are in high risk professions. What I am saying is that spending time and effort attempting to coerce people into getting a flu shot out of the belief that it'll create a significant herd immunity effect is wishful thinking at best.

Modern sanitation has had a vastly more significant impact on the spread of diseases like the flu than vaccination. It's not 100% either, but it's something that has benefits far beyond the short term effects of a flu shot.

It's sweet that you think so but, as noted upthread, better minds than you disagree. You know, people who didn't embarrass themselves by not knowing what 'herd immunity' meant.

I knew that herd immunity isn't that relevant to the flu. I still stand by my original statement:

Even if every single person got a flu shot every year, there would always be a sufficient number of potential carriers in the population to maintain and spread the virus. This is just a poor argument for this particular illness.

Wait now, so we can cite ourselves as proof now?

I'm going back to my bashing America ways. I'll cite myself all the time, which will make it all true.

We always could, we just usually word it as a third person anecdote.
