External moats are cliche, you want an internal one so the enemies fall in during their overconfident rush through the gate.

If you're going that far you may as well go for a secret lair of evil on a private tropical island.
A secret lair can't be used to intimidate and awe the local natives into joining your cult, you need a big castle/fortress thing to do that. I'm down with the tropical island part though. They're mostly mountain volcanoes anyway.

Ok maybe that's our difference. See my natives wouldn't have internet, you know on their tropical island paradise thing. I'd have a connection in my castle of course, but they'd all be living in mud huts or whatever. In an ideal world I can buy them all off with an iPod shuffle and then rule with an iron fist.

It can if it's a secret volcano shaped like a skull secret lair. Which I think would be an amusing sight in a spy parody movie. A line of houses and then a skull shaped volcano, then some more houses, and no one thinks anything of it.
