I literally do not care what the content of that article is; rape is overwhelming a crime of male aggression against women, and is very firmly established that way culturally. And I consider that, and anyone dismissive of the crime here, misogynist.
Do men sometimes face those same issues? Absolutely. But it's essentially always ALWAYS used to deflect away from issues, not to actually foster discussion about them.
"Guys get raped too" is a way to shut down conversations about rape and rape culture; no one ever saying that is actually interested in having a conversation about the pervasive, patriarchal systems that lead to rape. They're actually just telling women to shut up (when women are overwhelmingly the majority of rape victims).
So yeah, men sometimes get threatened with rape, or receive death threats. But women have overwhelmingly been the victims here.
And it's ******* dismissive **** like this that infuriates me (from the link Pold posted):

If anyone feels unsafe about talking to gamers, it is because Gawker crafted that narrative.
**** off. I've never felt safe in essentially ANY other gaming environment besides Zam, because gaming environments as a whole tend to be incredibly homophobic. Obviously not all of them, but hunting through the filth for a safe haven isn't exactly pleasant. And it's because of this that I've essentially never identified as a gamer - gamer culture, when speaking generally, is gross.
So don't stand there and tell me that Gawker created this narrative. "Gamer" has been associated with this **** for a LONG time, and all Gawker has done is call out those ******** for being what they are.
So keep telling yourself that "gamers" at large have always been accepting, inviting groups of people. It's not like the WoW o-boards existed long before gawker started publishing feminist articles or anything.
